At one level it's bonkers having a postal vote system where you count anything with the election day postmark on it (ours have to just arrive by election afaik). However I suppose that gets round manoeuvres like trump sabotaging and slowing down the USPS. So, all good.

There's an article from AP here explaining how they decide whether to call a state. This is their reasoning for calling California immediately after the polls closed:
The AP declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner of California as soon as polls closed in the state, even though election officials there had yet to release any results from Tuesday’s presidential contest.
The news agency did so after results from AP VoteCast and an analysis of early voting statistics confirmed expectations that the state’s longstanding political trend in favor of Democratic presidential candidates will hold.

One thing that's been bugging me. Biden and a few others have been talking about the US being the 'oldest democracy in the world'. Is that a widley held belief in the US? I've never heard that claim made for the USA before.

Just to manage Georgia expectations: it's obviously going to be ridiculously close and there will be a recount I'd imagine. Overseas military ballots and provisional ballots could end up being significant rather than the footnotes they usually are. We may get a Biden lead soon but it won't be over!

Indeed. That's a more meaningful way to judge it. But the US's claim doesn't hold up even if you allow that only allowing white men to vote while keeping millions of people as slaves makes you a democracy.
