US disregards diplomatic protocol, humiliates India's deputy consul general

This story just beggars belief.
A senior female Indian diplomat in New York arrested and strip-searched because of some alleged paperwork irregularity.

India has removed the security road block in front of the US embassy and U.S. consular staff and their families were told to return their ID cards.

Major diplomatic incident.

WTF do the US think they're doing?

The diplomat was employing a full time nanny on about $3 p/h and lied about that on the nanny's visa aplication. and although I don't think the NY authorities had the right to treat her in that way (cause I don't think anyone should be treated in that way), she is not the victim of a simple error here. and my sympathies in this case are for her employee.

whether they had the right to detain her at all is down to her status I think, whether she has immunity for everything she does while in the US or just for anyhting she does for her work.

This kind of irregularity should be sorted via normal, polite, diplomatic channels - not snatching a senior diplomat off the streets for a gitmo greeting and cavity search, ffs.

The government asked all U.S. consular officers to turn in their identity cards and the entire American diplomatic corps their airport passes while senior Congress leaders snubbed a visiting U.S. Congressional delegation for the second straight day by refusing to meet it.

The government also ordered the Delhi Police to remove concrete barricades on public land and roads that have existed for years around the U.S. embassy, sought salary details and bank accounts of all Indian staff employed at the missions and stopped all import clearances for the U.S. embassy, especially for liquor.
The Indian Gov. certainly ain't fucking around.
edit...sorry most of that info has already been posted (bit slow on the uptake i'm afraid)

Not one usually to take the side of the US against anyone else but this shit tried to pull a "I'm a VIP" bollocks, very unpleasant part of Indian society "I'm a player treat me different" bollocks, bang the fucker up.

If the Indians had cavity searched the American Ambassador I'm sure Washington would be screaming blue murder.

"Strip search" does not necessarily mean cavity search, but in either case you would be correct - Washington would go ape shit.

The American Ambassador to india wouldn't even have got that far, the people attempting arrest would have been warned off under pain of death by the escort pros.

This is a specifically Indian trait how exactly?
It's not, however there is a very unpleasant idea that if you are "socially superior" in India you don't have to bow down to laws that would get you banged up or possibly killed if you are not one of the "chosen ones".

That's good. A diplomat is put through an admittedly embarrassing incident. How does her country respond? By increasing possible threats to the lives of the other country's embassy staff via removal of security measures.

Yep.

I won't be surprised if we see some mob lynchings of Americans / foreigners in India because of this.
:(

This is one of those stories where everyone comes out looking like a cunt. Except the nanny. $3/hr?? While her employer gets a diplomatic wage!? What a joke.

I have very little sympathy for either side but agree with JC, it's a cunt move by the Indians to remove security for US staff in India.

Not really clear to me what the US authorities did that was wrong. She was treated the same as they treat all arrestees.

they arent removing security, theyre removing the extra special measures they didnt have to give the USA but did anyway on request , as a favour . Indians are under no obligation to block off their own roads due to US paranoia . And now they arent going to do them that favour any more .
