Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-25

An interesting report of Zelensky being contradicted and not liking it at all. Ukraine’s top general refuses request from Zelenskiy to step down | Ukraine | The Guardian

There's a report on the Ukrainian BBC site that seems to suggest that there may be more to it than the 'personality clash' theory. Interesting that the finger is being pointed at Maryana Bezugla for bad jacketing Zaluzhuy on social media. Bezugla resigned last month from the Servant of the People Party citing her loyalty to Zelensky against those in the party "who stick a knife in the back,". Last year she tried to move an amendment that would have allowed commanders to kill military personnel in a combat situation if they refused to follow orders.

(Chrome translates this to English)

and also suggests an explanation for what seems to be a U-turn on Zaluzhuy's dismissal

Kyiv's Western partners intervened in the situation, and expressed their sharp disapproval of Zaluzhny's resignation.
This version can be justified quite easily. Ukraine is now completely dependent on Western military and financial aid. Moreover, the coming days promise to be critical in the process of providing Kyiv with multibillion-dollar tranches of both European and American support.
At the same time, foreign media reports that Western leaders strongly advise Kyiv to switch to strategic defense - that is, in fact, to implement the strategy of which Valery Zaluzhny is a supporter.
The release of the Commander-in-Chief, although not yet agreed with the West, could very well be the reason for Zelensky's "veto" on this decision. And the West, apparently, has sufficient leverage to insist on its position on this issue.

There is an obvious contrast in Zaluzhny's appraisal ( below) of where Ukraine is at and Zelensky's more of the same approach, which does seem to inform BBC Ukraines view that "Zaluzhny and Zelenskyi have a different vision of what phase the war has entered and how it should develop further."

One bit that does stand out is the acceptance that the sanctions have failed , the weakness of Ukraine's state capacity and that national cohesion is suffering , all of which goes completely against the narrative from both the Ukraine government and it partners.

No sign of the US money though
This will be welcomed by Ukraine however it will only , and temporarily, go towards plugging a hole in the national budget . Having lost their productive capacity in the east , Ukraine needs to find an increase in revenue on a more permanent scale hence Zelensky’s plea to those who have fled , or not returned from studying overseas, to come back and pay taxes with some suggestion that military service might be avoided if taxes are paid .

The EU also has problems in meeting its targets for ammunition for Ukraine and their is a suggestion that they may have to purchase from outside the EU.

Hard to say whether he is just talking about a change or consistency of attitude or a radical restructure. It would be interesting to see what vision is driving such a proposed cull

Stalin was Georgian and tbf wasn’t the first and won’t be the last leader of a state to propose a whole scale clearout of elected officials or unelected officials.

My main question is what is he hoping to achieve by this ‘reset’ that can only be achieved by whole scale and across the board changes .

Does anyone still have the gall to accuse Russia of destroying the pipeline?
No I do not know for sure one way or another who actually destroyed it and the article does not claim to know for sure either. But there is plenty of evidence of Russia destroying lots of other things particularly in Kherson. She has plenty more videos and photos of ongoing destruction:

So Zaluzhny finally given the old heave ho.

Syrski in to replace.

Happy families on official picture but mixed reactions from observers. I remember reading about Syrski and the Battle for Kyiv and apparently he was very efficient but just seen some comments that he is an uber disciplinarian.

I guess Zaluzhny had to carry the can for the "disappointing" counter offensive. Despite various successes there was no headline breakthrough which was needed for the "optics" if nothing else.

Syrski is rumoured not to be popular with sections of the AFU and not because he is Russian.

Btw what's happened to Sarah Ashton-Cirillo ?

The pipeline fades into insignificance considering the deaths, the injuries and the destruction of homes, hospitals and schools and untold suffering of civilians that Russia has inflicted on its neighbour.

I hope those responsible are held accountable for their crimes against humanity,
