Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-25

This just allows Ukraine to do a bit of firing for effect before they are left high and dry, maybe recapture some symbolic town or two, it's way too late to change the course of things.

It seems to me that the USA had decided that it could no longer continue to back the war, and that the election of a new President was a good excuse to end to change course.

General opinion seems to be that the Houtis will get Russian antiship missles to fire at things. Though that doesn't strike fear quite as much as it used to, as least not to the American destroyer captains. Can't say I'd want to pilot a merchant ship through there.

I am optimistically waiting for a poster to tell us how to pilot a merchant ship in this sort of situation.

I await criticism for them getting involved in a European issue. Fuck the houties.

Let me get this right. These missiles and the British/French missiles depend on some kind of input from either US personnel or from US satellites to guide them on to a target in Russia?

Is that right or not?

They can be used without the US topographical guidance systems but would rely on gps only which makes them less accurate and more prone to interception over long range.

No.

It is suggested (by Russia) that the US is giving intel obtained via their satellites as to where to target the things, which may or may not be true, even if it is, so what?

Ukraine does seem to have a very efficient intelligence service with a lot of moles inside Russia, so probably using that more than US satellites (which could just be Google Earth), they have been using their own drones successfully against oil refineries and arms dumps for ages.

The missile is fire and forget, programmed before launch. Once launched, it cannot be controlled or commanded to self-destroy and its target information cannot be changed. Mission planners program the weapon with details of the target and its air defences. The missile follows a path semi-autonomously, on a low flight path guided by GPS and terrain mapping to the target area.[

That’s about right. US mapping plus tech people on the ground.
