U75's albums of the year 2007

Good to see Modeselektor and The National make the list, albiet quite low. I still havn't got the new M.I.A album, should probably rectify that...

Actually 230 nominated albums, plus a couple that were disqualified for being 2006!
Please don't tell me you've disqualified the Winehouse one :(

After the year she's had, exclusion from this could be the final straw :D

Rachel Unthank and the Winterset - The Bairns

Now, I haven't listened to this one yet myself, but the gushing praise heaped upon this "haunting" English folk record by Urban's music geeks had me rushing to the filesharing sites!

Wahey I nominated this

Tinariwen - Aman Iman

Now, I'd never heard of this lot until I read about them in the Glastonbury programme. Managed to hear a couple of minutes of them which was interesting but when I finally downloaded their stuff I was hooked. Superb stuff - traditional Touareg sounds reworked with multiple guitars. Stunning.

Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

Now this is proper pop. A dash of moroder, a bit of madonna, some modern disco, some trendy names attached. Yeah, you beat whores love it.

pah! None I nominated so far, tho there were two I completely forgot about until it was too late.....

Hmm, I dismissed the Roisin Murphy album without hearing it due to the previous one being a bit irritating. Will have to seek it out. Tinariwen are wicked, but didn't make my list for some reason. Probably cos I forgot the album came out this year...
I also forgot Deerhoof's album came out in January, and Para One's album too. GAH!

Beirut - The Flying Cup Club

Another superb album from Beirut, adding some chansony stuff into the pseudo-Balkan circus orchestral joy!

White Stripes - Icky Thump

Of course, in all the flurry of recent Meg White publicity (exhaustion, fake sex tape, gig cancellation) what a lot of people missed was that this was actually that rarity - a popular indie band making yet another decent album. What I really like about the Stripes is that each record is a new take on bluesy minimalism; even when it doesn't work like, say, White Blood Cells, it's still a great idea. I'm glad the White Stripes exist.

Dizzee Rascal - Maths & English

Oh the arguments! Lauded by the popular press as his best album ever, but felt by many to be his weakest yet (bias alert: including me :( ) this album has certainly divided fans of the genre formally known as grime. A popular single and Lily Allen collaboration seem to lose him cool points, but much of the album seems as abrasive and inspired as earlier stuff.

It's nothing like Ruby Blue, great as that is. Neatly explained by the change from Matthew Herbert to Groove Armada.

Dizzee's aint as good as Tinchy Strider's. Panda Bear was robbed.

It is very good, but something about it just leaves me a little bit cold. She always seems a bit too pleased with herself for me to ever truly warm to her, for some reason. So I'm not sad that I completely forgot to nominate this album despite its quality.

Battles - Mirrored

What surprised me most about those who voted for this record is that Hollis wasn't among them. Because this is pure prog, but prog as it should be done now that another 30 years has passed and lessons have been learned.

Yes- too pleased with herself. That's the one! I should still listen to it though.
