Toriers & Lib Dems, deal by Monday morning?

They won't get them.

Hopefully. I'm certainly not happy either way, I'll tell you that. It could be that it is better to see Cameron try to make a go of it and fail.

I want electoral reform though, so there's that for me to consider.

And this could be our one chance to get a change to the voting system, if that's the kind of thing that interests you.
What is the point in changing the way people are elected to an institution that doesn't work?

is it just me or has nick clegg actually been... really smart here? now the lib dems can't really take the blame for a 'rainbow' coalition not working, and will hopefully (assuming some sort of tory/lib dem deal) be able to curb some of the worst tory policies?

I'm coming back

Well, bags are apparently being loaded into cars at the back of No 10, and Cameron is preparing to give a press conference pretty soon.

Reckon it's a done deal.

Apparently he's just said that the talks with Labour aren't over.

Since when has propping up a tory govt ever been 'smart'? Beyond party and individual self-interest anyway. If he thinks anti-tory lib-dem voters (or indeed any anti-tory voters at all) will fall for any guff like we were forced into it, not my fault 'guv nonsense then he's in for a bit of a shock.

If the Con-Lib pact goes ahead, then he's just made his party toxic in Scotland.

He doesn't have to do any deal at all.

I mean 'smart' from a public relations point of view.

They can't help themselves: -

1618Confusing signals coming from the Lib Dems. A frontbench Lib Dem source has told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that a deal between his party and the Tories will be announced later today. But, in response to the question, "Have the talks collapsed with Labour?" another Lib Dem insider has told our correspondent Mike Sergeant: "No. Our expectation is that talks will continue."

:)

Indeed - the sight of Hague announcing, through gritted teeth, that the Tories would conceed a referendum on AV was really rather splendid.

Exactly. Well, I wouldn't call it splendid - I've already made my views on PR clear - but it was a signal achievement by Clegg, not only in the fact but in the manner. Clegg has the measure of Cameron & co.

good for them

I find this situation good for British politics. It's all very humbling for British parties to have to compromise. Takes some of the arrogance away for a start.
Compromise also means you have to pay attention to what the other party is proposing. If they get PR that will further improve British politics.

If by really smart you mean offerin up the Scottish Lib Dems at next years Scottish Parly elections. And by curbing Tory exceeses you mean doing nothing about them then yes you're right. There will be a deal, they will have to hold to that deal and it will include cuts. And lets be clear on thi,s Cable, ie Lib Dem Treasury spokesman called for cuts in civil service pay before the Tories, attacks on CS pensions before the Tories, public sector cuts that were deeper than the Tories. So quite how are the Lib Dems curbing some of the Tory excesses I don't know?

Does this mean that the agreement has been approved by Lib Dem MPs and/or Federal Executive, or just the negotiating team. This could drag on for longer if it's only the negotiators.

Perhaps this?

There will be a joint meeting of the Liberal Democrat parliamentary party and ruling federal executive at 1930 BST tonight. According to the Lib Dem rule book, at least three-quarters of the members of both bodies must give Nick Clegg their backing before he can agree to a deal with the Tories.

Perhaps this?

Sounds like they're meeting to agree to the deal with the tories we were assured was impossible. That the mere suggestion of would lead to immediate mass resignations of both membership and MPs. That must 100% include PR et fucking cetera.

And every metropolitan LibDem voter that switched from Labour as a result of the Iraq war and TWAT.

All of the gay voters I knew during the Blair years recognised how ahead of the game the liberals had been and voted for them even while New Labour delivered all of our rights. Will they be voting LibDem/Tory at the next election?
