one of the thing with online grifting is that some people are nto aware that it is a grift. the think that a person is passionate about a subject, and just freely out there pursuing there vision by bringing it to the masses, bringing it to youtube out of the goodness of their heart and passion for the cause. this might be the case sometimes, and might be teh case at the start of youtube careers.

but for fucks sake folk factor in that this is a livelihood. that people have one eye on their "vision" and one eye on their bank account. Taht is why you get grifters spouting the same shit over and over, video after video, on and on - less about the "vision" right, and mroe about keeping that lovely stream of youtube bucks.

it's chronically unhealthy in so many cases because your fusing ideology again and again wtih instant fast cash.

I think often it's a pretty blurred but self-reinforcing mix of the two. I'd say they generally start off down that path through genuinely held (if fucking toxic) beliefs in that 'internet wanker' is a pretty competitive market and someone who's 100% faking it won't get traction. Once they do get a toehold though the system is totally self-reinforcing. Do more and more videos, ramp it up even further, bring in more cash and more attention - they don't often back out once they're on the path.

The far-right activist Tommy Robinson “could face jail” after broadcasting a documentary against high court orders at a demonstration in central London on Saturday, according to the anti-racism group Hope Not Hate.

The film, Silenced, repeated false claims he made about a Syrian refugee that led to him losing a libel case in 2021. Robinson is due to appear at a high court hearing on Monday accused of contempt of court for making the documentary.

Nick Lowles of Hope Not Hate wrote on X: “Tommy Robinson is currently screening the film Silenced in Trafalgar Square, just 48 hours before he appears in the High Court accused of breaking an injunction preventing him from releasing the film.. He’s heading to jail.

“The Attorney General’s office have been made aware of Tommy Robinson screening a film he was banned from showing. Such a flagrant disregard for the law could well see him facing the maximum two-year sentence. Only himself to blame.”
