Kemi Badenoch’s time is up!

Shadow Cabinet so far:

Shadow Chancellor: Mel Stride (Central Devon)
Shadow Foreign Sec: Dame Priti Patel (Witham)
Shadow Justice: Robert Jenrick (Newark)
Shadow Education Sec: Laura Trott (Sevenoaks)
Shadow Chief Whip: Dame Rebecca Harris (Castle Point)

Joint Chairmen: Nigel Huddleston (Droitwich and Evesham); The Lord Johnson of Lainston

She doesn't have to be perfectly competent, or even competent, she just has to be less of a walking disaster than any of her competition.

I didn't see the BBC thing, though - was it really bad?

I think she has to do better than that. Keeping the Tories together whist placating Reform and bringing them into the fold will be no mean feat. I share your fears though, I think she could be around for a long time yet.

On the other hand she's only held briefs at trade, which probably suited her, and equalities where she just got to play at the culture war. She hasn't really been tested and how she stands up to that remains to be seen. She's clearly got a temper, a knack for making enemies, a loose relationship with the truth and a habit of saying daft things under pressure. It wouldn't surprise me if she crashes and burns.

Adam Bienkov on Xitter points out:

So far Kemi Badenoch's "fresh start" has involved appointing:
  • A Shadow Justice Secretary who wants to quit the ECHR
  • A Shadow Chancellor who wants to take away maternity rights
  • A Shadow Foreign Secretary who was sacked for holding secret meetings with a foreign government

Stride's seat is pretty vulnerable IIRC.

Yes, Tim, you have a femdom fetish and there's nothing wrong with that but you don't have to be quite so blatant about it, you know?

Not a betting man, but if I were, I'd put £ on the refUKer corporation having peaked electorally.
Historically the Tories have been survivors but this time, I think my money would stay in my pocket. There has been a pattern across the Western neoliberal world of traditional parties collapsing. That hasn't happened here since the demise of the Liberal party a century ago, but I do think it could happen here. Think the Gaullists in France (who bizarrely have the PM right now, but whose vote has totally collapsed).

Tbh we've written off the tories so often it'd be a bold not to say foolhardy thing to write them off now

I think they have as farage isn't really one to run a party which is run as a party. And he has a record of running away from groups. I think a fiver on him no longer being leader at the next ge would be a pretty safe bet
