Thread to note supply shortages in the shops

They are not the same. My local for a decade has been a Lidl and in that time when I have gone to Aldi they seemed to be chasing the big four in tactics like moving stuff about and less bargains generally.
ha ok. on tuesday this week aldi were goodies with honourable business practices just like lidl, and full stocks as a result but its friday now and consequently they're bastards like the rest, fairdos.

I never said honourable. Just better on the spectrum of employers.

I'd rather work in an Aldi than a Sainsbury's, but they operate their stores will about a fifth of the staff, which I'm not sure really makes them model employers.

We tried Aldi, or was it Lidl, idfk, and honestly it was just to stressful to buy two people's worth of shopping amidst the hordes of people with 7 times the goods and a posse of kids. Smaller aisles to

Yep. Last time i was in an aldi that was really clear, there were three exhausted people working in the whole big shop, there was an issue and the tills had to close to deal with it because not enough staff. You can't have both cheap and ethical at the same time certainly not in a big supermarket chain thats the shitty truth.

A small independent on my way home
From what I understand, there is no shortage of veg on the wholesale market.

The supermarkets, however have screwed down their UK suppliers to such an extent that they have been warned that they will stop supplying (either supply someone else or stop growing fruit/veg). This is now happening. That, coupled with import difficulties due to BREXIT means that the supermarkets have essentially fucked themselves.

You've been drinking it Vietnam style.

Condensed milk is very different from evap. It's sweetened a lot and has the consistency of thick glue. I don't take sugar in coffee so I don't think I'd like that.

My mum loved evaporated milk. She used to top up jellies with it, and it doubled up for DIY purposes, such as sticking tiles around the sink, and filling cracks.

Something they never mentioned in the adverts. :(
Condensed would be much better for DIY.

This chat isn't helping refill my store cupboard. Has anyone actually seen evap in shops recently? Or is it just not in my local Sainsbury's & Lidl?

On farming today this morning two guest speakers blamed the high cost of energy for the issues and the shortages,
the other two blamed the labour crisis. They also said the government should look at sorting out local produce
as opposed to seeking out new supply chains from overseas.

It was an interesting program. One spoke about how the supermarkets refused to place orders for uk grown tomatoes late last year, relying instead on supplies from Turkey, Morroco and Spain.

i reckon an old fashioned greengrocer with the paper bags and all that would do really well in either of the towns near me, people would love it. The supermarket prices mean that my little fruit and veg shop would be loads more expensive though if i had to drive in and get things from the london wholesale market every morning, idk whole thing is a big mess.
Luckily I have one of those places within walking distance. Quality varies hugely, though, and it was bad during the hot weather because she only has a small fridge out the back. And earlier this winter some of the stock was frost damaged from being in the unheated shop overnight. Nevertheless, deserves support in the teeth of competition from the co-op.
And yes, the greengrocer has tomatoes, apples, pears and eggs. Sometimes even duck eggs.

But, of course they are though I mean do you think supermarkets in the other countries who have no rationing of tomatoes right now are run by a different sort of idiots the generous ones?
We just needed to adjust a load of stuff to prepare for increased self reliance / resilience as a result of the change in circumstance of leaving the common market & we (the government and the supermarkets) haven't.
My contadini in-laws in northern Italy seem to be part of farming cooperatives. So I'm wondering if the existence of such levels of organisation has much clout in a few European countries? Any clue Flavour?

As friendofdorothy is saying, people are confusing Evap with Condensed. We used to have Evap on standby at home in the 60s and 70s for pouring over tinned fruit for pudding, adding to jelly to make it disgusting, or for in coffee. Not tea. Condensed is for making tablet, or nowadays in cafe bonbon, or back in the olden days in extremis for tea, in which Evap didn’t work.
