Thread to note supply shortages in the shops

Will definitely be growing my own tomatoes again this summer, last year was my first go and they were bloody excellent, they even smelled of tomato, unlike the stuff at tescos.

Its very much worth paying extra for good toms or growing your own cos the cheap salad tomatoes taste of water.

Last couple of summers have fucked my toms over early though with blight or rain damage.

i live near i high street with aldi, coop, sainsburys, waitrose and a tesco extra. not one local shop that does veg though
It's the same here in Caterham. No greengrocers, only supermarkets (Waitrose, Morrisons and a Tesco). The little corner shops and the Zero Waste shop have a small selection of fruit and veg but not enough to be relied upon.

The nearest decent farm shops with good fruit & veg I can think of are in Godstone and Nutfield.

My first attempt last year, i just sliced one really good tomato thinly, lightly covered the slices with soil, then put the selected seedlings under a plastic greenhouse. I'lll have to google blight.

Its caused by humidity, you can check out the Gardening thread for details

This UK shortage isn’t related to Brexit actually. But the fact that the UK is primarily reliant on domestic supply that’s currently affected by high energy prices and foreign supply that is faced with bad weather currently.
Depends on who you believe. On the radio this morning part of the blame was laid on the cost of power at Thanet Earth!
From their website ( but 2021 )

"Not sure why theres no workers, its not like this is a complaint thats been happening before Brexit and got kicked into high gear by Brexit and everyone said we need workers at the time Brexit happened* but nothing happened. Other than that its a completely surprise issue out of nowhere thats literally unpredictable based on the last decades events"

*I make no value judgements for or against Brexit here just so we're clear, we need better labour practices and wages for agricultural labour and on paper yes Brexit could have been great for that but it has been literally 8 years and its still causing problems

Lots of smaller shops are agile enough to get new suppliers. The big four supermarkets are trying to do so, but are finding it hard when they have a reputation gained during the pandemic for not paying invoices on time and demanding invoice discounts. Dealing with them could put a company out of business.

Lidl always paid suppliers on time. Hence Lidl shelves are full. They pay their front and back staff well for the industry. This all matters. I will take pics of bursting veg shelves in the morning.

you used to include Aldi in this but have dropped them, why is that is it cos they're doing the tomato rationing in their Uk shops but not in their german or spanish or romanian ones?
Why is it Lidl and Aldi are mostly full of produce but the big four supermarkets have empty shelves? Could it be about paying suppliers in full and on time? See also paying lorry drivers decent wages instead of shite?

I'm planning on going down to Lidl at Mordor tomorrow; I'll try to post photos of the really existing tomato situation :D
you'lll be disappointed. there are no tomatoes in middle earth.
American flora doesn't fit in the prehistoric European setting. famously the first edition of The Hobbit did mention them once in error but Tolkien had that corrected from the later editions.

Do you live in a nice bit of west london or similar hash tag ? ( i note the woven basket) .
i love living out here but it does feel not fair at all that i'm basically forced to rely on tescos or to drive a very long way in the car, thats a serious failure of infrastructure things in general. :(

They had those little punnets of various types of delicious tomato's but two quid plus and then a lot of those Dutch hydro tomatoes including those vine ones that were cheaper. I grew the seeds from the Lidl variety "Italian baby plum" last year and got 20 kilos plus and they were fantastic. I highly recommend doing this.

The gardening thread in suburban has lots of helpful people for growing veg.

oi TopCat why did you omit Aldi this time have you just gone off them
They are not the same. My local for a decade has been a Lidl and in that time when I have gone to Aldi they seemed to be chasing the big four in tactics like moving stuff about and less bargains generally.
