Thread to note supply shortages in the shops

That has to be a new peak Brexit level of fucking madness and desperation.

Imagine if you could travel back in time to 2016 and tell people that by 2023 the Brextremist press would be so desperate to pretend everything's fine that they were actively encouraging people to harvest wild tomatoes from sewers.

Though sadly I guess it would make no difference, as they would probably just see it as the lastest scaremongering tactic from Project Fear...

Alternately, imagine you could travel back in time to 2016 and tell people that by 2023 at least one Remainer would be so desperate to blame everything bad that happens on Brexit and nothing but Brexit that they were misinterpreting a joke story in the Daily Mail as a serious story actively encouraging people to harvest wild tomatoes growing in sewage (not from sewers as you've claimed).

Hard to believe back then, but maybe the lack of lycopene in your diet is affecting your cognitive processes...

Are you saying it isn’t brexit related?

Seeing as the lack of fresh produce in the UK is very much related to Brexit, your hypothetical scenario is yet to come true...

Are you saying it isn’t brexit related?

I'm mainly pointing out that the Daily Mail is not actually actively encouraging people to harvest wild tomatoes growing from sewers, and pointing out the lengths some Remainers are still prepared to go to distort stories like the shortage of tomatoes to continue their predictions of post-Brexit apocalypse.

So you are denying it is brexit related. Ok.

No. See post #281 if you want my thoughts.

I'd agree with you that it's it’s weather AND friction causing supply issues here, and I'd add the cold winter and high fuel prices which have made it uneconomical to grow tomatoes etc under cover in Britain for harvesting now.

What I'm mainly objecting to is the glee with which some posters are reacting to these shortages, seeking to portray it as solely down to Brexit, and even going beyond that to the idea that the Daily Mail is genuinely encouraging people to harvest wild tomatoes growing in sewers.

And why not, eh? Eh? Hell in a handcart.

Lidl yesterday had no eggs.
today they did, but required staff approval on the self service till like alcohol. presumably to stop people taking more than their ration.

fun times

I hope not, its fucking Feb so there won't be any.

Not entirely sure what it is I’m supposed to be accusing Tracey of when passing by her stall today. Maybe I’ll try to buy a red pepper, cos I do want one, and see what extortionate made up price she comes up with?

I gotta say, no wonder there are no tomatoes at £1.10 a kilo, over where I live (in Poland) they are going for at least £2.50 a kilo (and that's in places like Lidl), sourced from Spain. Local greengrocers are more expensive, probably like £3.50-£4.00 a kg.

I'm starting to think that maybe Supermarkets in the UK have unrealistic expectations about the price of veg and tomatoes in Europe (plus logistics cost) at the moment and are unable to meet supply at the prices they (and consumers) demand?

£1.10 is crazy cheap.
I'll take some photos in our local Lidl today and you can compare the prices.

Red pepper in our local Lidl is £4.00 a kg (depending on what offers they have)

I think the Daily Mail is exaggerating. Tell you what, I will go shopping in Brixton market on Monday and if I can get all the quoted veg and salad for half the quoted price you pay for it?
If my single red pepper from Tracey's stall costs exactly what that article says it will, what do I win?

As promised.
The exchange rate at the moment is 5.25pln to the pound.

Red peppers £4.19 per kilo

£3.40 and £3.00 for Spanish grown tomatoes

£5.70 for the cherries

Polish cucumbers £3.80 per kilo

I think it's safe to say, asking suppliers for tomatoes at less than £1.60 per kilo (supermarkets are making a profit on the sale price, after all) is going to get anyone a grand sum of 0 tomatoes.

Tracey and her whole stall wasn’t even there today :( Some shit jewellery vendor in her spot. She was probably a crisis actor.
Gaps in Surrey Street where there are normally midweek stalls, today...and most stuff looking a bit shabby. 😕
