The Reform UK Party (latest nigel farage vehicle) is it to be laughed at or not

Looks like when the refUKers gain another 1780 members they will claim greater membership than the vermin, probably in the next few days. No doubt they'll hope for enhanced media attention during the news desert of the Interval?

make that needing an extra 1680 members to overtake the vermin; since I posted the screenshot 32 minutes ago, 100 people have decided to use this evening to join the refUKers taking them through the 130k

At this rate it'll be hours, rather than days when they get membership crossover.

Even given the fact that membership, per se, has no direct correlation with electoral success, this will not be a comfortable story for Badenoch to field in the media.

If people are going to use the hands on heart symbol to respond to my posts, I think that it is reasonable for me to ask what it means.
So do I. Please pardon me for what was a (albeit very limp) attempt at humour. I'm not interested in getting into an argument about it. And, in the spirit of mutual bafflement, we recent arrivals have been expressing the very same confusion among ourselves in another place.

If you have nothing to contribute to the thread discussion it's OK to say so or, better still, just read, digest and consider before posting again.
Oh, I do think self-appointed Forum police are simply brilliant!

Alas, you don't speak for the entire site (even if you hope you do) and it's good to shake things up a bit before they go too stale and stodgy.

What we actually need is a Reform supporter to make an appearance and explain their reasoning and justification for voting to make their lives worse, not yet more tired theoretical rhetoric. As I mentioned before, I did try to engage with one previously, but they cut and ran away before answering any of my numerous questions. And then the Thread got locked.

And, may I remind you of the Thread title (it's at the top of the page)? Incredulous laughter is the only thing a fascist grifter like Nige deserves. Mind you, here's an opinion piece that probably won't go down well on here because it's offensive or something:

Exchange "American Electorate" for "Reform voters" and you're not too far away. I know it's unpalatable for the right-on types on here, but sometimes a basic truth is just staring you in the face. What to do about it? Stop giving the racist airtime, expose the fallacies in his position, don't let him run rings around you with his sophistry and maybe ask the most important question of all: does he have a penis that looks like Toad from "Mario Kart?"

I don't object at all to your humour.

Yeah, sanctimonious liberals like you calling working people stupid; that's the way to defeat right populism.

I think the government needs to go much more on the attack against Reform. The idea that they'll be able to 'out-argue' them is laughable, because they don't give a shit about legitimate arguments. The way their campaign will work is that Farage completely makes up a tweet saying 'Ahmed got off a boat from Islamistan 2 months ago and raped 5 little British girls and now he's living in a luxury mansion receiving £2000 a week benefits and the police refuse to investigate him in case it seems racist', gets retweeted by Musk going 'WTF Britain, you have to get this corrupt, woke government out and take your country back!' Liked 5 million times by people, none of whom will ever see or believe any information about 'There is no evidence for this story whatsoever'

Which is exactly the response I expected.

Like I said, stale and stodgy and things need shaking up around here, because whilst you're all agreeing with each other and being inoffensive, they are rising in popularity.

At least Cloo seems to get it - the Left needs to push back and take control of the "immigrant scrounger" narrative. Take Back Control, even!

Perhaps we need another complex 3-word slogan to make the point: "Immigration Is Good?"

Tend to agree, but by adopting the neoliberal agenda the LP has abandoned the one weapon that would really undermine right populism. If working people's needs are not met why should they vote for the mainstream parties?

Yeah, absolutely their policy of 'be slightly less evil than the Right' is going to totally backfire and lead the country towards populism, not away from it.

The transphobia is a perfect example of this. They could have put out the 'culture war' fire about transphobia, recognised the people kicking up a fuss are a noisy minority as polls repeatedly show most of the public is either indifferent to or supportive of trans 'issues'. They could have said 'Trans people are less than 1% of the population, they should not be an electoral issue and their care is between them and their health professionals'; then set up some decent policies for women's rights, funded more support for investigation of rapes and sexual crimes etc so when the TERFs came screaming 'YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT WOMEN' they could say 'Actually, we've done this, this and this, which will make an actual difference for women - the Tories never did that'. Instead they have added fuel to the fire so Reform can come along and echo Trump's 'We'll destroy "trans ideology"' (aka trans people) scorched earth cruelty. And similar applies to benefits and so on.

And, as you say, they are not meeting working people's needs - they're not doing anything that will make a dent in housing affordability, for example. And Reform won't do anything about it either, they'll just say vague things about it and then sell everything off to their private equity mates.
