The Ashes 2019

So they say 'look up' at Headingley. Is this a bowl first or bat first day?

Meanwhile, next year's schedule is out.

Plus: at least there isn't a test match in May or September.

Minus: only six tests, which I believe is going to be the norm going forwards. Headingley misses out. And just one day of test match cricket in July, the best month of weather in the UK. Instead, we will be treated to a pointless white-ball tour by Australia.

Inspiring stuff from the ECB. They really let their imagination run wild with the schedule.
Six tests, six odis, six t20s. No odis at all against the touring test teams. t20 internationals seem to me the most pointless thing of all. Sachin Tendulkar had the right idea. They should be scrapped.

If you're going to have two tours of three tests each and want white ball stuff in July, how about this as a structure? Team A comes over late May, plays a couple of first class matches, then three tests spread over June and the start of July. Team B comes over in July and England, Team A and Team B play a two-week triangular odi tournament with a final at Lord's. Team A goes home. Team B plays a couple of first class matches then three tests in August.

I guess next year West Indies have their domestic t20 to get home to so they wouldn't be interested in that. :(

T20 is a fun format for a mini tournament. Perhaps inviting a handful of new cricket nations to participate. But not against established teams.

It should just be scrapped. It's not played very much anyway, and when it is played, half the established players are rested. It's shite. And in England at least, it serves no purpose. Three odis against Pakistan would sell out. There's no reason to play t20 instead.

The shit weather is bad karma for having the third test at Headingley instead of Trent Bridge where it so manifestly should be.

August Bank Holiday weekend always hosted The Oval Test until they started messing around with the traditional calendar and milking cash cow of international cricket by squeezing in as many fixtures as possible, and the forecast for South London is unrelenting sunshine right through into next week.

And now bad light. Very bad precedent for the rest of the match (and series). Batsmen are seeing it fine.

Suits Australia very well, this, and Warner has toughed it out well. Could make England pay tomorrow.

When the previous match ended with Australia holding out for the draw with 6 wickets down the floodlights were casting four shadows for each player, so artificial light had clearly superseded natural light as opposed to merely enhancing it. Why therefore isn't play continuing under similar conditions today? Given the amount of money people pay to watch Test cricket there's no real excuse to go off for bad light during normal playing hours when floodlights are available.

I totally agree, as long as it isn't dangerous, which it certainly didn't look to be. Just luck of the draw if you have to play through a period of gloom, as it is when you have to play in cloudy swinging conditions instead of sunlight.

England losing the plot a bit here. bad signs.

Oh FFS....

When you win a toss, bat. If you aren't sure, check the pitch, the weather, the crowd, your horoscope... Then fucking bat.

I'm guessing that Leach and possibly another spinner were bowling in bad light on the last day at Lords whereas the quicks were bowling when the light deteriorated here. Atherton (I think) reckoned Root was given the chance to put spinners on here but said no and they came off.

He wanted Woakes and Stokes on instead. :D

tbf it did start raining soon after. I'm worried about the precedent, though.

It would not be the worst idea to get Leach on now.

I can understand Root's decision. Doubt it would turn much after 20 overs (or whatever it was) on a day 1 pitch. Root should have offered Archer's left arm medium pacers (as opposed to Archer's left arm spinners or right arm tracer bullets).

Century partnership up now, off just over 21 overs. I'm happy to eat my words about David Warner. Took him a while to settle in, but both he and Labuschagne have looked increasingly comfortable this afternoon, and they're maintaining a good run rate.

He rode his luck and is now cashing in. You do need that as a batsman - every genuine play and miss is a mini-life, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. Got to make the most of it when it's your day.

Yeah, he played and missed to some good deliveries, especially earlier in the day, and got some luck. I do think, though, that even when he's played and missed today he's never looked quite as uncomfortable as he did in the first two tests.

England have helped out the Aussie run rate with a few unnecessary overthrows. There have been at least a couple of 5's today, caused by wayward throwing and/or slow backing up.

Edit: And now Warner's gone. Archer to the rescue for England.
