The Ashes 2019

Well we should have 2 day's play at least, so possibel for a result i reckon.

and as England current world champ at 1 day cricket shoudl be an English win then! :)

Your logic is irrefutable. Let’s just call it 1-1 and move on to the third test. :)

Talking of Chris Gayle - West Indies against India today were 114-0 after 10 overs. Both Gayle and Evin Lewis scoring at over a run a ball before getting out. Now at 143/2 off 18.

The weather forecast has improved a bit. They may get a game finished yet.

Should get a full day today, with a bit of luck they'll get 1.5 or even 2 sessions tomorrow. Hopefully 2 full days on Saturday and Sunday though there is a bit of rain around Saturday evening. So with a fair wind that's 10 or 11 sessions. That should be enough time to bowl England out twice, three times probably.

Looks like the aussies, according to the Metro, has picked Hazlewood ahead of Starc. Looks like going for economy ahead of a strike bowler, imho. Starc has been a bit expensive in the tour match, though he did take wickets. I would have prefered him to Hazlewood, fine bowlers they both are, cause I think starc could cause some panic in the English batting, but if his radar goes wrong leaks heapsa runs.

Looking forward to the coin toss. What woudl you do, bowl? Generally I reckon always bat first, but maybe today with pitch a bit damp and still moisture in the air bowling will be better?

They were saying on tms yesterday that Hazlewood bowled too short in the warm-up match, so I'm a little surprised he's been picked. No reason he can't be devastating in English conditions - accurate bowler with bounce and enough pace and movement. But he needs to be able to adjust his length. Here's hoping he gets it wrong. :)

No idea what to do at the toss. The sun is out in London today, so bat first, but be prepared to lose a couple of early wickets. I think England can manage that. ;)

Today looks a good day for batting, tomorrow less so. I reckon whoever wins the toss will bat. If its Oz I can see it playing out in a similar way to the 1st day or the 1st test. If England bat they'll be 60-5 by lunch and Oz will be batting by 16:15.

The old-fashioned dictum on a day like today was to bat first and to be satisfied with two down at lunch. I think in England's case, three down at lunch would also potentially be ok.

Problem with that dictum is that it is based on the premise that there will be someone to dig in in the afternoon as the ball softens and cash in in the evening as the bowlers tire.

Bat first and still be batting at the end of the day. That would be a right result for either team, I think.

yes should bat first is the usuall rukle, but the sun has just gone in here at chessy north, big looking cloulds and wind has just picked up, hmmm so maybe today be the exception when should field first?

But not so warm and muggy. I'm not sure this is a big swinging day. Certainly not like it was for the Ireland match. Lord's has become a treacherous place to bat with the right overhead conditions, which this isn't today but might be tomorrow. Got to bat first, thinking about it. Even 250 might turn out to be a good score.

But as ever, could also be a good toss to lose...

And there we go. Aus win the toss and bowl! Confidence or hubris?

Winning the toss and bowling first in the second test of an Ashes series in England after winning the first match. I believe we may have been here before. :hmm:

250 would be a good score, I can't see either side making that much if the bowlers bowl to their true potential this morning. Can't wait for the toss, BBC being one of the few sites I can get at work, and they said to bat first.

ETA: according to the site Joe Root said Leach will play. did he make that decision after losing the toss? Thought you had to name the side before the toss? Or is the report just coming in out of order?

Nah you have to name your team before the toss but they only confirm it to the media after the toss. It's the confident thing to do. Whether it's the right thing to do, we shall see.

Well I think it is, as Oz will be batting last, spinner is the correct option imho

Oh sure, but they didn't know that when they decided. Going in without a spinner is always a massive risk, and I think people sometimes forget how well spinners can do in England. Moeen has a brilliant record in England, as did both Swann and Panesar.

I wonder what odds you could get on England having to follow on after batting first? I reckon this team have it in them.

This is a bat-first day. Has to be. It's bright and breezy. Whatever moisture there is should be gone by lunch. Anything under 250 will be a very poor effort. I know there are batting woes, but we shouldn't be making too many excuses.

Hmmm not looking a good decision to field first. this here form Tuffnel on the bbc . .

The pitch looked dry yesterday. It was glistening green for the Ireland Test. That last Pat Cummins' delivery came off the bat very easily...

So, third ball of the day. It's short of a length and outside off. You leave it, surely, surely, surely.

Exactly the kind of stock ball Hazlewood's been struggling to change to adapt to English conditions, and Roy manages to get out to it. Hugely disappointing.

Hmmm another wicket, maybe a good decision both to field and play Hazlewood!
