The Ashes 2019

Just can't bat. Its been obvious for a very long time now. Just been getting out of jail with late order runs (how many crucial runs did Curran score against India last summer) and Broad and Anderson bowling teams out cheaply in English conditions.

This problem has been going on for a very long time now.

Indeed. Not sure why I hope for anything different, really.

Today looks a good day for batting, tomorrow less so. I reckon whoever wins the toss will bat. If its Oz I can see it playing out in a similar way to the 1st day or the 1st test. If England bat they'll be 60-5 by lunch and Oz will be batting by 16:15.
There you go. England still batting at 16:15. ;)

I'm giving England the first session, Australia the second. England need to win this next session. Two ways to do that. Collapse in a heap to 230 all out then take four Aus wickets, or bat for at least another two hours. I'd like them to at least make Aus take the second new ball. Being bowled out with half an hour to go might not be so bad.

Some very, very soft dismissals in that afternoon session. Sometimes its the manner of the dismissal that tells a bigger story than just someone getting out.

Agreed. Infuriating that England could and really should have made Aus pay for their hubris at the toss in that session. It really could have been Edgbaston 2005 all over again. But this England team just isn't as good as that one was.

Well we got 250. It doesn’t feel like enough but it’s a lot more than I was expecting at 130-odd for 6

Some of the WC winners looked pretty cooked. It's not entirely surprising if you've been building towards something for 4 years and then have then have everything that went on in the tournament and the final itself.

Who would you prefer to be now? Someone like Morgan, just wandering around the T20 games signing autographs and whacking average bowling for a few overs or one of the test batsman?

I think that's the wrong question. When you retire, who would you rather have been?

Bowldim.

One more here and this has been a good day. Archer sounding brilliant as well.

And Warner was out to a previous ball as well apparently. No matter. Better to smash the stumps.

Warner looks horribly out of nick. A bit strange really because he had a decent WC. I have a theory brewing...

Just landed in Sofia. Fucking bunchacunts. Thought we'd draw for rain. Now we'll lose by an innings.

Nope. If the forecast is anything like right for tomorrow Australia will be something around 150-5 by stumps and we ain't losing by an innings from that.

Archer bowled well didn't he? They're scared of him. Hence why they were trying to injure him when he batted. Hope he gets his revenge with interest.

Both Broad and Archer looked very dangerous tonight. Give them a bit of luck with edges and overheads tomorrow and this could translate into a first innings lead. 11 wickets in the day, so we're powering towards a result. :) Stay positive - today's play was also a decent start towards a win. Sod drawing.

tbh the only real thing that disappointed me today was how England dealt with the short stuff. Just get out of the way of it. Woakes in particular should just be chucking himself to the floor. Don't try to pull or hook. Do what Steve Waugh did. Banish that shot. Let Cummins wear himself (and the ball) out with pointless maidens.

And byes. 12 today from overcooked bouncers.

There were a few more disappointments to be fair. Roy has to go. Never batted for 2 sessions was your stat wasn't it? For that alone he shouldn't have been picked. Ever. Burns batted fairly well but was still dropped twice. First time on 16. I still think he's lucky. But we'll take lucky right now. And Root has to get over this weakness against balls hitting the stumps. Have a word with Ricky Ponting who overcame a similar thing. I'm sure he'd be glad to help.

Lets face it, we're weak. But so are they, Smith notwithstanding.

Root excepted, the problem isn't technique. It's mindset. I don't know how they fix that. Root probably can fix his problem. Some of the others, less sure.

But yes, Roy's selection is starting to look foolish. He had the chance to show that he could adapt at Edgbaston, put his shots away and just block out the good balls. He might still have failed, but he would have failed a hell of a lot better than he did. He's had five test innings now, and got in twice. It's those two innings that tell the most to me - out both times clean bowled when dancing down the track trying to hit a six: once with a hundred beckoning against an average attack; and then with a match to save where runs were irrelevant.

I'm not sure why you're calling it hubris. The commentators made the point, on numerous occasions, that England also planned to bowl if they won the toss. Yes, most of the commentators also seemed to disagree with this decision, but maybe we need to accept that the pitch was one that didn't really give too much away to either batsmen or bowlers.

The Aussies are probably reasonably happy with the outcome of their decision to bowl, but it's not like they dominated the day's play, and they're probably also ruing a couple of dropped catches that really should have been taken, as well as some excessively deep field placement at first slip that saw two clear edges drop short of Warner within three overs. Similarly, England probably aren't too unhappy with their position, and if they had taken one or two more wickets at the end of the day, and/or managed another 40 runs or so, they would probably have considered it something of a victory on the day. I think that the test is poised in a pretty interesting spot.

I agree, and I thought that the Aussies were using the short-pitched delivery too much in the final session. They were too predictable with it. One an over is enough, and mix it up a bit. You don't need three is a row, especially when quite a few of them were far too short, or off target.

He did bowl well, but the idea that the Australians were trying to injure him is, quite frankly, stupid.
