Stats don't lie. Nobody averages over 60 like that except bradman. And he does it as part of a weak team as well. No soft runs in there. Kohli for style but Smith for results. And I genuinely hate to say that.

Hats off to Smith..more than half of his team’s runs. If you are gonna get him, you have to get him early. Watching him live and square on really provides an opportunity to see all of his fidgety, nervous energy and movement. The scoreboard flashed up his previous stats at Edgbaston - average 7.5!!! That’s altered a bit now...
As for the booing. Yeah, I did for all three cheats but didn’t for his ton. Watching Smith’s celebrations it looks as if it’s gone some way to providing a siege mentality within the Aussie camp.
In the ground it took a while to note Jimmeh’s absence. When Woakes came on after 4 overs we thought it might be a bit of ‘funky’ captaincy from Joe! Doesn’t look good for Anderson and puts a huge strain on the rest of the bowlers for this match.
I think Australia are ahead in the game now. Just can’t see us posting a big enough reply. Then batting last....

Kudos to Smith, sure saved our bacon today and giving us a fighting chance in this match.
I must admit I was suprised winning the toss and batting first. Don't know what the weather was like at the ground, but down here I thought it was perfect bowling weather, humid and a slight breeze. But still I guess in a test should always bat first, sign of confidence.
So today we'll have to see what the aussie bowlers can offer us, good game to all!!

Today looks like the crucial day doesn't it. England will need a decent lead to have a chance here and while the Australian score isn't huge I doubt anyone has much confidence in England's ability to get a huge score either. I think it will need someone like Root or Stokes to put up an innings similar to Smith's - it would be a massive surprise to see either of the openers or Denly doing it so there's a lot of pressure on them.

Scores don't matter from Roy and Burns, just for Christ's sake STAY IN. Take at least 20-25 overs out of the new ball, that should be good for 60-70 runs and it gives Root and Denly something to work with.
