It's so sad. I was talking to an American friend about this the other day. We agreed that they really a need a way to continue identifying with their core "frontiersman" myths without the need for people in developed conurbations to have access to such devastating weapons.

The sad thing is that the well has become so poisoned. There are plenty of people in the NRA who would agree to a certain degree of gun control measures, but there is so little trust between parties that people will sacrifice lives over one inch of ground.

It does feel that way.

I think a toxic political environment has a lot to answer for too, though.
They did a survey of NRA members internally and they were pretty much against people with certain MH problems and people with firearms having weapons when asked privately, it's just that they see publically agreeing with this as a slippery slope to being totally disarmed.

Guns have one purpose. To drive a piece of metal into the target to cause injury or death. When i'm fucking with gun nuts i always ask them if they like a bolt gun as much as an AR-15. They both do the same thing (just guns do it at a distance). Helps to defetishise them.

I think maybe the mechanics of weapons can be put to one side when there’s a chance that some accommodations could lead to a lot less deaths.

The yanks are trying to control the type of weapons people have access to.
Rather than the sort of person who has access to guns.

People who have access to legal machine guns legal very shortbarreled rifles etc the states committ virtually no shootings with them.
( it might be because their expensive and so few in numbers).
Or the fact you have to jump through similar hoops as a UK firearms licence the ATF can inspect your storage and do. You just cant shove an uzi in a drawer in case of burgulars which happens with a lot of handguns!

Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as a gun attack in which at least four people are either killed or wounded.

In total, it estimates that 8,434 people have died as a result of gun violence in the US in 2019 so far.

and a 5.56round at close range will go straight through someone with enough power to kill and injure someone else.

short of having Wyatt Earp on duty I doubt you could get a swifter response doubt somebody with a ccw could have done better.
