The American mass shooting thread

Tallahassee is the hometown of Mayor Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for governor that the mail bomber appeared to be obsessed with hating on.
Florida yoga studio shooting: two killed before class members tackle gunman

Andrew Gillum was the one that White Supremacists targeted with racist robocalls recently:

Andrew Gillum calls racist robocall targeting him 'deeply regrettable' - CNNPolitics

I think there's audio of the calls over at Democracy Now, but I don't feel as if I should go get the audio, but if someone else is interested in listening, that's the place to find it.

some good news
Kentucky man wanted to be 'the next school shooter'
armed nutter arrested after making threats found with plan loaded rifle loads of ammo planning to drive to school.
his lawyer claiming its a thought crime
pity they can't ship him off to Gitmo torture is wrong but if you've got to torture someone a racist wannabe school shooter makes a fairly acceptable target.:hmm:

Sounds horrid. Loads of college kids :(

I hope they take blood samples from the cunt that did it. And while I am not in any way, deprecating the bravery of the highway patrol officers, if, this is like the Bataclan incident, then I suggest a change in training procedures is at least considered.

this is not like the bataclan incident, is it, one shooter with semi-automatic pistol v several people with automatic weapons

From Gunman kills 12 in California bar

"Ventura Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who later died in hospital, had tried to enter the active scene with a local highway patrolman when he was shot several times.
The husband and father-of-one had been a policeman for 29 years and was due to retire next year."

Oh, BBC - at least try for a different form of words...

I meant more the fatalities that occurred at Bataclan whilst the gendarmerie secured the seen. But is only speculation on my part with regards todays tragic incident.

Unless it’s schoolkids, it just washes over me as a news item now. That’s a pretty horrendous realisation of how normalised this has become for me.

That’s how I feel nowadays.
We are just being brutalised into accepting reports of mass murder as a normal part of life on this planet.

If there is a change because of this horror, I'd hope it is more that politicians, (especially) the press and wider society start to recognize what the difficulty and danger level is for someone put in the position of having to respond to something like this, usually without any real information about how many people are involved, who is involved, what weapons are involved, where they actually are in the building and the rest.

Sgt Helus was by all accounts a very experienced officer, trained in firearms to a high level, did the right thing (actually and in terms of what society demands of him) and from most of the early accounts he got shot straight away. I think he was a hero, but for society to demand that people will just throw their lives away like that whilst also doing nothing to actually prevent things like that happening is utterly sickening.

Why is this news even? It was on Ch4 this evening. Who cares, it's the US, it's just lazy journalism because it's served up on a plate.

Americans killing each other again, SO WHAT. There are a trillion other stories going on in the world, I dunno Ottery's burning barrels

knowing that it was the medication that cause this

the 45 glock is blameless

:facepalm::facepalm:

Is it possible that Americans collectively see mass shootings as a regrettable price to pay for something they truly value i.e. the right to bear arms?

So its considered in the same way as deaths from car accidents. A pity, but a price worth paying for the benefit of driving

The victims often seem to be white and middle class or their children. So if that does not prompt change from politicians, nothing possibly can.

Gun deaths increasing after years of decline, study finds
08/11/18
Homicides and suicides involving guns have been increasing, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after years of declines in gun deaths.

During 2015-16, 27,394 people were killed by someone with a gun in the United States, and 44,955 used a gun to kill themselves, according to a report published Thursday in the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
