Spanish Political News

The police who were recorded saying horrible things about Junqueras as the van carrying him to prison rushed past are going to be investigated, apparently. Doubt anything will happen though.

Apart from the rape jokes they were saying how the guys transporting the prisoners are nutters who will swerve the van until it nearly rolls over.

Junqueras' lawyer has denounced mistreatment of Junqueras in that van but not specified what has happened.

Due to the fact that the EU has done nothing to kurb undemocratic practices by Spain, the PP and their politicised police think they can do anything they want.

Tonite on the protest in front of the town hall there was a unanymous call for a Catalexit once Independence is sorted.

Much of the ruling parties actions so far have been very undemocratic. However, the referendum itself was hardly democratic either.

If the elections in December bring a party into power who ultimately support independence, then I would guess a full, legal and properly regulated referendum will take place after the full effects of independence have been fully considered and discussed by those for, and those against. People still have to remember there are always going to be Two sides to this.

Personally, I still suspect Madrid would sooner let Catalunya have independence, but they really don't want to be seen to grant it so easily.

That is the best I can answer - I will fully admit I am no expert on Spanish political history, or even politics today. Neither are 99% of the population of Spain.

are you for real? you think all they need to do is win in December and they will get the referendum? sorry to be rude but you're completely deluded.

Who are 'they'?

If whoever wins in December advocates independence, the party will push for a legal referendum. They will probably get it. Call me deluded if you like, but it is the only workable solution.

The editor Guille Martínez-Vela of El jueves, a satyrical magazine similar to Charlie Hebdo, has been called in front of a judge
to face charges for making a joke about the spanish police on duty in Catalonia.

The joke headline in his weekly magazine reads: "The continual presence of the riot police has finished off the reserves of cocaine in Catalonia".

Rajoy has, on the one hand, given more autonomy to the Basque country today while presenting three new appeals to the constitutional tribunal to block catalan laws recently approved by the now jailed catalan government.

They are:

1. The law of commerce, services and trade fairs.
2. Climatic change law
3. A law to regulate traffic with less than 9 passengers.

It is getting more crazy by the minute.

Wonder what would happen to a publication in the UK if it made jokes about riot police being high on cocaine during duty? It is a fine line. I doubt Private Eye would take the chance.

Christ man, that already happened. Exactly that. Spain is not interested in workable solutions that involve referendums. They use violence to stop referendums, they're not going to make them legal. How can you not see this.

There was no legal referendum.

They used violence to stop an illegal referendum. Even those in favour of the plebiscite stated it would not be anything more than a test, or 'mobilisation' of voters.

All of the actions by the PP have been condemned by almost all. What hasn't been condemned is Rajoy's stance on insisting the rule of state is adhered to. The rule of state could allow a legal referendum in the future.

Yeah, they used violence to stop the illegal referendum. Instead of just making it legal. That's the point.

The (minor) point is that it was Francoists who put that into the constitution. Does that make it legal? Look at the concept of it.

Major point is unspoken.

You are absolutely wired to the moon Stanley

The defence Lawyer who accompanied the catalan politicians to the court in Madrid and then to prison has spoken to the press:

He says that firstly, the Judge hardly looked at the defendants during the 5 minute hearing, she was too busy looking at her mobile.
At one point the Lawyer told Junqueras to stop talking until she looked up and acknowledged him, which she did momentarily before getting
back to her mobile.

Once in the police van, the catalan politicians were handcuffed tightly with their hands behind their backs and were insulted by the police
who travelled with them. Carles Mundó had to be seen by a doctor for an injury to his back as the van travelled at high speed with the sirens blaring while the prisoners didn't have seat belts.
One police officer held his mobile up to Junqueras' and blared the spanish national hymn in his ear.

Their processing went on until 4 in the morning and they were given no food or water, only after several hours was a lawyer able to get some water and crisps from a vending machine.

Two of the seven catalan ministers were strip searched.

On a lighter note, one minority police union has rejected the partial, incendiary and unprofessional conduct of the oficial police union for posting up stuff boasting about
the catalan arrests.

Of all the issues in play, the legality of the referendum is the absolute least important.

If our government weren't such a bunch of ruthlessly inept twats they would be making more political capital of the Catalan situation to divide the EU over policy and play different power-blocks against each other. Cause a bit of mischief.

Ah, the good old sabre-rattling days.

This would the government of inept sex pests and inept apologists for sex pests, I suppose. Surprised the EU negotiating team not doing better than they have been.

Swastikas as well, LiamO .

8 Catalan teachers arrested for hate crimes, for getting pupils to discuss what happened during the election.
