'Responsible Reform' amazing document by disabled people, please circulate/

'Tomorrow, I have possibly the most exciting news yet - I bet you can't believe it's even possible can you? But it is. The momentum has knocked me sideways - I'm humbled by the response from every corner of the web, from journalists, from unions, from politicians from charities, flooding in to my inbox so quickly I can't even reply.

And the evidence!! I have been sent emails and FOIs and links from everywhere - it feels like I'm watching the Government's plans for welfare reform crumble before my eyes!'

Sue is an amazing woman as are all the contributors, I hope she is right on the above though, I did though think at some point 'liberal britain' would baulk at the brutality of these reforms and then all sorts of things would happen, inc leaks from govt departments, etc..

btw, Sue is personally in debt now using her own funds for the campaign, they are setting up a fund, if you can donate go on the blog, i have..

YES! why did I not think of this. Anyone who is eligible for legal aid should contact public interest lawyers. Ask for Tessa Gregory, tell her that Tom from Birmingham Against the Cuts sent you there, and talk to her about it.
They are a really good firm for challenging government stuff - they recently won on libraries in somerset because of errors in consultation, and are also taking workfare on..
http://www.publicinterestlawyers.co.uk/

fuck me, I'm such an idiot - will email them now to let them know they might be contacted by people, and I'll also DM a couple of people on twitter.
Huge thanks Tom. Have posted this far and wide and expect people who will suffer because of this bluddy consultation and removal of their DLA will make good use of the info..

Cool - I've passed the details on to Sue Marsh as well, so hopefully there is a legal challenge to be made.

(a) a trial period before any assessment process is implemented fully for new applicants and those transferring from DLA;

(b) disabled persons organisations to be involved in formulating the assessment process.'

major amendment now proposed

'Coma patient refused ESA benefit..

I couldn't help but notice this on the CAB website/forum just now....

http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/forums/viewthread/2496/

"Yep- it has finally happened (or near enough).

Client’s husband is in hospital in a coma. He was sent ESA50. Client contacted DWP to explain situation and was asked to obtain letter from hospital confirming he is in a coma. Did so. Was told to send it to ATOS rather than local BDC. Did so. Husband has now received decision letter- yep, as he has failed to return the ESA50 without good cause and is therefore capable of work and no longer entitled to ESA….'

voting now, btw read this, Kafkaesque

Fucking hell.

My DLA when it was granted was for an indefinite period. Only just caught up with this thread though have seen stuff about the spartactus report and a little belatedly read the thread.

although my DLA is for an indefinite period, I was reassessed about 8 years ago, but am kind of expecting the call.

How long before getting the indefinite letter was it before you were reassessed? I'm dreading another one of those forms through the door

It's about 3 and a half years since my last re-assessment and the receipt of the letter giving an indefinite award.

Fingers crossed then. Really can't face another one of those. It only seems like I did the last one a while ago but I'm sure it's longer than I think it is

Very shocked yet not surprised to have been sent this link..

Of Mutual Benefit Launch

mutual_benefit.jpg

When:
10th March 2011, 08:30AM
Where:
Portcullis House, House of Commons
On Thursday 10 March, we launch Of Mutual Benefit, a new Progressive Conservatism Project report on welfare reform.
Confirmed speakers:
  • Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform
  • Rt Hon. Frank Field MP
  • Jack McGarry , CEO of Unum UK
  • Kitty Ussher, Director of Demos (Chair)
Of Mutual Benefit: Personalised welfare for the many looks at how radical reform to incapacity benefits could provide more generous, secure coverage for individuals whilst saving the taxpayer billions. The report argues for reform to encourage and incentivise greater take-up of private welfare solutions such as personal income protection.
This is a privte, invitation-only roundtable taking place under Chatham House rule in the Wilson Room, Portcullis House, House of Commons, SW1A 0AA. For more information on the project, please email sarah.kennedy@demos.co.uk.

Makes me sick to my stomach. I'll get back to this after a sleep.

In November 2001 a conference assembled at Woodstock, near Oxford. Its subject was ‘Malingering and Illness Deception’. The topic was a familiar one to the insurance industry, but it was now becoming a major political issue as New Labour committed itself to reducing the 2.6 million who were claiming Incapacity Benefit (IB). Amongst the 39 participants was Malcolm Wicks, then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Work, and Mansel Aylward, his Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). Fraud – which amounts to less than 0.4 per cent of IB claims – was not the issue. The experts and academics present were the theorists and ideologues of welfare to work. What linked many of them together, including Aylward, was their association with the giant US income protection company UnumProvident, represented at the conference by John LoCascio. The goal was the transformation of the welfare system. The cultural meaning of illness would be redefined; growing numbers of claimants would be declared capable of work and ‘motivated’ into jobs. A new work ethic would transform IB recipients into entrepreneurs helping themselves out of poverty and into self-reliance. Five years later these goals would take a tangible form in New Labour’s 2006 Welfare Reform Bill.'

This has been the end game of the welfare reform process since the beginning, UNUM were at the very first conference on 'malingering and illness perception' in Oxford as was N/L, White, Aylward, Wessely and co. you are right about the brazenesss of it all and Ussher hosting it, clearly they know there will be no real opposition to it, baffles me why the unions are not getting more involved..

its a minority interest.....

that's astounding but encouraging. if the mail are supporting the campaign against the cuts, they might start listening

to people (although i'm not optimistic)

Yes it is, though I must admit I did a doubletake at the sight of the Mail printing this one. Maybe there's (at least a little) hope for the paper yet.

i thought demos was meant to be a liberal left think tank?
I did too.

Quite taken aback to see Kitty Ussher as chair, Ex Labour MP resigned after expenses scandal.

Anyone in the know realises the WRB is just an excust to introduce privatisation and Personal Insurance Plans. (PiP) Just shameful when they are so blatant about it. How many years will it take to implement and what of those of us now who would never get PiP even after ATOSSERS has deemed us fit for work.
