Pubs want to halve the two metre rule

and now I'm back for younger viewers this a good example of the titans of Australian politicians that we've lost

Luckily older drinkers don't use wetherspoons :hmm:
I appreciate your real point here, but ........

....... I really don't think that your "older drinkers don't use Wetherspoons" line is true at all.
In normal times, everyone round here** calls Monday in Wetherspoons "pensioners' day" because of the significant Monday discount -- and the Monday turnout absolutely supports this .... plenty of oldies/retireds go there all the time, as well.
**(especially the staff :D)

I read that as a bit tongue in cheek :)

Cuntybollocks & Co are looking at ways to reopen

They're getting that into every paper around, regional and national.
That Glasgow News piece is the first one in a non-English paper that I've seen, though, and tbf the lack of a known re-opening date is emphasised in that version.
But the Yorkshire Post version (first linked to Badgers ' post #158, previous page) doesn't say anything at all about reopening dates.
I'll bet that Wetherspoons PR pushing different wording in different papers has got to be to do with different approaches to easing lockdown in England as opposed to in Wales, Scotland, NI.

Back in the UK I have been to more utterly shite beer gardens than good ones tbh. No idyllic views of the countryside or the smell of fresh cut grass or the sound of barges on canals. Tarmac, car parks, industrial bins, rotting tables , noisy air con machines and metal beer cannisters stacked up, normally walled in.

We need some photos

You have a keen eye for these things. Have you thought about organising a family-friendly festival?

i've seen people sitting in though. not grassing but i guess people are getting desperate

Perhaps they were waiting for food? I got a bacon sarnie the other day from the caff and sat at a table for five minutes whilst they cooked it. Also sat at a table in the curry house whilst they finalised my collection.

In Berlin bars opened a week ago but under rules which makes it difficult for them. Punters have to sit on tables with plenty of distance and limited numbers. Nobody is allowed to mingle at the bar or in open spaces. Everything has to close at 11pm and in Berlin people usually don't go out before 10pm. Many Berlin bars are tiny and don't fit any more tables, so at most they can have ten customers at any one time, which is not financially viable. They are allowed to put tables outside but that only works if the weather is nice and this weekend was grey and chilly. I was glad that I was able to go to a bar again this week but its not the same.

What happens when you need a wee though, which you inevitably will after a couple of pints?

The Barley Mow in Tilford has the door open so you can go in for a piss. Signs up saying wait for the persons before to come out, but no cleaning between punters.

Read today (then lost link ) that there are approx 47k pubs in the UK and 27k have gardens. Of those 27k with 'gardens' no doubt a fair % only have space for a small number of 'distanced' punters to drink in.

Indeed and pubs are often shunted together with restaurants. How many restaurants have gardens big enough to make it viable to open? Also most people eat at restaurants of an evening and there's not that many evenings warms enough (and dry enough) to sit outside all evening in lots of the UK.

If they do allow beer gardens to be open it will certainly be in-line with their claimed bit by bit approach. A fair few pubs round my way have been selling take-aways so it'll just be a small step for people to be able to use their garden and toilet. For vast majority of pubs and restaurants it won't make a jot of difference.

Wetherspoons has the biggest garden round my way and the advantage of a table app.
However if you are in the toilet you need to go through three sets of doors, up a long staircase to get there.

Guess table service is possible for others but at an increase staffing cost to support a lower number of customers :hmm:

A lot of city/town pubs have little or no space plus a higher population of people which is not ideal either :hmm: Will be interesting to see if there is an increase in drink driving as a result.

The Myrtle Tavern near me is on the edge of a park and a cricket green and has a massive garden. But the bar itself is small and hard to access for social distancing patrons. I would still avoid, but ask me again in late June and I may have cracked

I think they are chancing on the definition of garden to get the figure that high tbh. Most pubs will be in high pop density areas where space is at a premium. Back in my neighbourhood in England I can think of only three out of nine establishments locally that have a beer garden, ones ok , another is small with plastic grass and took about 15 people pre covid and the other is in a car park. Oh and theres one with a rooftop terrace overlooking peoples back gardens and an alleyway. Theres loads with smoking areas but they are tiny.
