Peterborough by-election, 6 June 2019

Alligator in chains by the park gates.
A by-election is expected in the constituency of Peterborough following the conviction of Labour MP Fiona Onasanya (see MP convicted of speeding driver lie )

The result at the 2017 general election was as below :

(for those who cannot see the above image or for whom it is blocked by work etc.
it is the result of the election as below:

Fiona ONASANYA (Labour) 22,950 (48.1 +12.5)
Stewart JACKSON (Conservative) 22,343 (46.8 +7.1)
Beki SELLICK (Liberal Democrat) 1,597 (3.3 -0.4)
Fiona RADIC (Green) 848 (1.8 - )

The by-election is not guaranteed, as Fiona Onasanya can appeal, and she does not necessarily lose her seat automatically. However given the circumstances of the case and potential sentence, it is likely.

It’s never the offence and always the cover up that gets you.

A £90 fine and three points ( I don’t think you’d get a speed awareness course at 41mph but maybe) v the thick end of £80k a year plus expenses plus a pension? What did the risk / reward calculation in her head look like? Or is it the arrogance of many politicians thinking she was above the little people?

Plus she’s a solicitor so if she gets time she could be struck off, so no career fallback. It’s totally baffling why she did it. Apparently she had a clean licence as well

Her message to colleagues today. Doesn't look to me like she'll resign as MP voluntarily...

“As many of you are already aware, due to widespread media coverage, I was found guilty of perverting the course of justice. Although I vigorously maintained my innocence, the jury has decided that I am guilty.

“I campaigned for justice and for the interests of ordinary people throughout my entire working life to date, but it is this which has made both national and international press. The first jury was dismissed having failed to reach a decision last month but the second jury reached their conclusion within days.”

“Regardless of what you believe or suspect, the fact remains that I Fiona, sought to be the choice and voice of change — but this may now take a different path. More than ever before I am asking that you commit time in prayer for my family.

“In times like these the natural inclination of believers is to ask God why? I personally do not, because in my experience the answers are usually far above and beyond my reach. What I do know is that I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day.

“While God did not save them from a guilty verdict he did save them in it and ensured that their greatest days of impact were on the other side of a guilty verdict. Of course this is equally true of Christ who was accused and convicted by the courts of his day and yet this was not his end but rather the beginning of the next chapter in his story.

“Please pray that my family will find peace and strength in this perilous time through this guilty verdict.”

Doesn't appear to be anything like 'sorry , I fucked up ' in the long statement .

Does this trigger one of those new recall petition thingys? Or does the by election happen automatically?

...did she compare herself to Jesus or is my phone fucked?

“As many of you are already aware, due to widespread media coverage, I was found guilty of perverting the course of justice."

what a wonderfully disingenuous sub-clause. She's almost saying "Due to widespread media coverage I was found guilty of perverting the course of justice."

Well, journalists are the Pharisees of today, aren't they?

Apparently if it does go to by-election, Paul Bristow will be the tory candidate. I met him a few times back in the day, very tory, but also seemingly pretty level headed and friendly enough. No idea what the intervening time has done to him though.

Inspirational stuff, eh!

In all my years of following politics I've never read a statement like that. Off the scale.
Really, in a mere year of following the "Real Donald Trump" I've read much that puts that in the shade. And did your political perusing not lead you to the words and wisdom of The Rev Ian Paisley? Fiona's but a neophyte in such company.

A fair point. I've blocked Trump so try to stay ignorant of his ignorance!

Spectacular.

Is there a sizable God-bothering demographic within the good burghers of Peterborough by any chance?

Yes. Cambridgeshire generally IME.
Mormons have large land holdings there and in East Anglia and Lancashire. They're the largest foreign owners of land in the UK.

From the Guardian.

At lunchtime outside the Crown, a man sat slumped on the pavement tugging on his orange fleece. “That’s the last English pub around here [on Lincoln Road],” noted Majeed. “There are 20 or 25 different nationalities on this road and boys hanging out on the street and things, but people are busy.” Does he think Peterborough has suffered? “If the migrants weren’t here, where would all the businesses be? Peterborough is very nice, they are good people.”
