Paul Embery

That’s really fucking upsetting. My grannie appears to have bought The Beat’s “Stand Down Margaret Thatcher” on vinyl, which we only discovered after she died and I went online searching for the weird cover that I used to always pick out and ask her to play, and my auntie who we thought was the culprit confirmed “nah that wasn’t mine”

Your nan? Fuck, I feel old

46. They used to play that at the youth club disco when I was at school!
Awesome! We got Saturday Night at the Christmas dances but I mind at break time we had a radio so we could listen to Here Comes the Hotstepper and Inforrrrmer!!!! ( followed by Something indecipherable) and Incredible (ft general levy)

Aye, not the same I suppose!

He's trying to express a class based anti-elitism through identity politics. It's going to be heavily tied to his own cultural experience rather than class experience and he ends up romanticising and inventing it and its enemy. He's a grown up trying to centre class- he should damn well know better.

You are, of course, spot on. But, I remember reading something by him when he wrote about his experience as a kid in Dagenham and it was about a sense of a multi-ethnic community with shared interests and solidarities produced by work at the car plant. He was writing about class experience.

There is no doubt he has collapsed of late into cultural explanations. And you are right to finger him on it.

I think that’s really regrettable and sad. But, it’s undoubtedly where he seems to be declining to

Christmas dances?? We didn’t get them in Birmingham pal!

You should listen to the sisters of mercy version of Emma by the way. A goth classic, brilliantly overblown.

I will.
A now absent friend introduced me to urban when I was in London but I’m rural as fuck. I’m so rural I managed to be an involved member of the SSP yet missed Tommy Sheridan’s sex baths. City weirdos

Yet it seemed to be a big attraction for dexter the silly nationalist alt right weirdo.
Aye? I wonder if I’ve met him.
I just mind Tommy came up and shouted a lot at a cannabis march thing here in the bught park.
When we went out on the streets to talk about freeing the school meals my friend wanted to put “Tommy Sheridan’s revolutionary school meals policy” on fliers we were printing out and me and him came to screaming blows about this, both fucked on Smirnoff at the time.
Sadly now no one will ever know what inexperienced young drunk AF women in the highlands did to chip away at the weird Sheridan worshipping within the SSP.

When you say you missed it?
I missed it! Nothing to see here. I’m not sure who you are but I know you were in the SSP, don’t want to know if we’ve met tbh- I ran to the far north for a reason :D

Unless you are the guy that’s from Edinburgh and used freeserve music chat pre 2000 and told me “I was in the SSP and it was all Stalin Stalin Stalin” that’s not you though is it? :(

My rural face was in shock! I had no idea! Now we all use the Internet I know too much. I quite like- no LOVE- highland style socialism- WAGES, POVERTY, SOCIAL JUSTICE not any of that mad shit keep it simple I say.

I was a founder member, ooooh dontcha know, for my sins. Was in Govan branch at the time and aye Sheridan was a fucking predator scumbag. The Edinburgh guy, wasn't Eddie T was it, deffo not him as sadly he passed away in 2016.

Embery reminds me of Garry Bushell.

Started off pretending to be left wing and once he got the contacts was happy to be an openly self serving right winger.

Embery cares about nothing other than his own piss poor brand imo.

Bushell became a fascist sympathiser for quite a few years, Embery isnt following that path.

I must have joined in 2000- 2001? At the age of 19, scary! Inverness/ highland branch. So I won’t know you- I don’t recall going south much for anything SSP related, maybe once for a meeting of erm.... memory!! I dunno it was a more hardcore Marxist thing(which I recall being out of my depth in, no change there!) whereas the more regular branch stuff wasn’t. We went to the Iraq stuff in Glasgow together I mind that. I was definitely out a couple of years before NOTW-gate. I actually just searched Steve Arnott’s name on here to refresh the memory and of course they were team Tommy weren’t they? As was Aberdein, but I think it looked different from afar, we weren’t in the thick of it. I don’t have bad memories of my time in the party or of Steve to be quite honest. Seen him defending some pricks years later though. Latterly I think at least the younger ones distanced themselves from Tommy but that took a while.
