London Mayoral Election 2024

It's just an attempt to scare some of the people who might go off and vote Green/Libdem/whatever into voting Labour isn't it. I don't think there's any real risk to Khan here.

Yeah, I've just had an email from my union claiming that

IT’S NECK AND NECK AND EVERY SINGLE VOTE MATTERS. WE URGE EVERY MEMBER TO VOTE LABOUR FOR SADIQ KHAN FOR MAYOR OF LONDON AND A LABOUR LONDON ASSEMBLY.

Will be interesting to see what the margin of victory turns out to be.

The woman who came forward and outed Daniel Korski as a sex pest deserves medals.

Susan Hall was only put forward as a no-hoper to ensure that the membership would choose Korski, who might have been more of a threat, triangulating presumably between the ULEZ and hate march angle and some govtech efficiency savings snake oil.

According to the Evening Standard, London’s mayoral race was "electrified" in its last 48 hours by a final poll showing Sadiq Khan’s lead over Susan Hall closing to the "smallest since their campaigns started."

Which is another way of saying that Hall is still miles behind.

'Electrified' :D I think that's what they call wishful thinking.

Yeah it is just an attempt to squeeze the vote for Khan and then hopefully down the line for Assembly.

I expect that it'll help a lot and we'll get more Labour AMs. Question is whether that'll come at expense of Greens and LDs, which have 3 and 2 at present. I reckon Labour might take 1 of each. As well as some off the Tories.

Which isn't great, the Greens and LDs AMs don't have power to do much but they are good opposition for any mayor. Better than 13-15 Labour Yes Men anyway.

It'll be Khan by some distance but it will be interesting to see whether Hall gets closer than Bailey did last time. I reckon a lot of Tories/far right, didn't vote for him in 2021 because he was black, but he still managed 35% to Khan's 40% of first round votes. If I'm right, combined with SK's perceived "war on motorists", Hall might close the gap a bit, despite being a steaming fuckwit.

I think some of the LP anxiety relates to change of voting system; they feel the need to warn people off their previous voting habits in the Mayoral of going 'heart' first and Khan second.

They were getting some bad vibes about Khan around here in canvassing earlier in year. On the local estates at least. So they were very worried about turnout.

My polling station in a rock solid Labour area always has low turnout too so I get that.

Some friends are running one of their campaign rooms in another part of London and it seems a lot of CLPs are running one or two by or inside their big estates. More of a GE style get out the vote campaign there at least.

Have cast my votes.

If you're watching results for London and see a bloke hanging about on stage who looks like me but with short grey hair, that's my brother who is Deputy Returning Officer, and also the man responsible for pissing off Lawrence Fox by emailing him to tell him he hadn't done his application to stand for mayor properly. :D

i feel an urban whipround to get your brother something nice to drink might be in order

It's going to be difficult to compare this time because of the different voting system though isn't it. It's not 'vote for who you want round one, then pick an actual contender round two' any more which I imagine will push up the Labour vote a fair bit.

Yeah, I reckon that the LP decided that explaining the differences between SV & FPTP was too much for most voters so, instead, they've gone with the simpler untruth that it's a close thing between Khan & Hall; has the same effect/impact I suppose?
