Local Elections 2018

They are consigned to the dustbin because their programme has been taken up wholesale by the party which is currently running the country. Get out the champagne lads.

True. But I suppose they were always going to return once the damage had been done with Brexit.

it's useless anyway as a guide to a general election that isn't happening.
Aye, certainly, but it just looks a bit better - as a snapshot - than the overall councils won/lost picture. The comparison with 2014 is totally unimportant, particularly as that was a good year for Labour.

Still at the highly speculative/pointless end of the discussion it would be interesting to see the age profile of who voted to give that 35/35 dead heat. If they were older voters Labour could cling onto some hope that the younger voters who voted for Baron Corbyn in 2017 weren't in the picture. Anyway, that's speculation upon speculation,

There are (at least) two obvious reasons why it's not a clear prediction of the next GE result, but that doesn't mean it's completely useless.

And I suggest that Labour would hope to be doing better than they are doing, not just in terms of how many votes, councillors or councils they won yesterday, but in terms of having any sense of having a positive agenda which is engaging significant numbers of new people, especially given the right mess that the Tories are in.

Yep to all that. One other thing, it will be interesting to see where the ukip votes went and whether that firms up as a trend for the future.

Blimey, it looks like our council has gone from 1 to 3 or 4* Labour councillors, sadly at the loss of our one Green, who is a seriously genuine & around nice guy, who has done a lot for the town. :(

* hard to tell if it's 3 or 4, because the council's website is a fucking mess, there's no 'before & after' comparison, and only one seat out of three was up for grabs.

How can you say that, when this is a direct comparison with the seats that were up for grabs in the 2014 local elections?

Four more years of a Tory government, Labour should be gaining overall vote share, but they are predicted to be down by 4%.

Here in fun loving Tower Hamlets Mayor Biggs has significantly increased his majority on a larger turn out than the election three years ago after Rahman was booted out. Not especially surprising given that the coalition built around Rahman has split into two quite separate and fairly hostile parties.

Council seats count begins this afternoon.

TUSC still seem to be waiting for that electoral break through

Mole Valley -- the true blue heart of Surrey, whose Tory MP has over 50% of the vote -- has just changed to no overall control from Tory. That's surprising. It was previously 21 Tories, 12 Lib Dem, 7 Independent and 1 UKIP. 14/41 of those seats were contested and as a result, it's now 20 Tories, 14 Lib Dems, 7 Independent and no UKIP.

21% turnout in my ward - the results aren't up yet as I gather they're counting this afternoon.
Anfield (44th most deprived, 25% turnout, 20% Labour vote) and Everton (72nd most deprived, 26% turnout, 22% Labour vote),Liverpool, County ward 24th most deprived in England 25% turnout Labour councillor elected by 22% of the electorate.

But, how many of those independents are basically Tories? :hmm:

This could probably be the ideal result for Labour - one that reminds them of the many problems they still have whilst also suggesting they are still on the right path. If they had won Wandsworth / Barnet / Kensington etc then the crowing from Bastani, Jones etc would have been unbearable.
