Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

Thats the twitter account that I have some credibility concerns about, and so far its almost impossible to corroborate a lot of what is said there. It could be mostly true, but without sources, images or whatever I really wonder about some of the stuff, such as whole cities being taken over by protesters, army or police switching sides, etc.

It was easier to get a feel for reliable tweeps on Egypt I think. That account dominates Libya. Seems things are retweets, but it also retweets others. However, it describes itself as Libya Youth Movement so is maybe being fed into by several different people in different locations.

I think all in all I trust it. Maybe not to be right all the time but to tweet in good faith. I haven't seen anything in particular which has then gone onto be contradicted.

Although you can read something somewhere else, on a blog say, or even an independent website and it's possible it's the same people behind it or it's just repeating the rumour.

I mean now they are saying Sa'adi al-Gaddafi has been 'arrested' by protesters, but as far as I know these twitter accounts are not people who are in Libya right now, so I cant treat these things as fact.

True, but there are a lack of other sources available to us that would be able to provide the contradictions. I hope we get a lot more sources from the key eastern locations tomorrow, otherwise I'll still be none the wiser.

In my post with the link to the liberated Benghazi radio I edited as when I continued listening it sounded more like a series of phone ins and wondered if I was confused, and the tweets were just meaning recordings from an answering machine set up for non internets. Then I re-edited because the news seemed to be confirmed. They did mean it was Benghazi.

I guess we will have to wait and see if we have been conned.

I think that particular confusion was two separate stories that got conflated. There were reports that the 'media centre' there had either been taken over or burned, and Ive no idea if these are true. And separately a protest 'radio station' was setup, which is the internet site you linked to.

One of the only things those twitter accounts have mentioned today that I've been able to confirm to some extent via video out of Libya, was something about mercenaries wearing 'yellow hats' , and on the page of .mp4 videos linked to earlier there is one clip which shows men with guns who are wearing yellow hardhats of the type we would see on building sites. But without further info I cant read much more into what the clip is actually showing.

Right I think Im going to have to give up with the tweets for now, too much in the way of unconfirmed rumour flying around. The latest of which seems to be the idea that foreign mercenaries are entering the homes of people who are out protesting, with some insinuation that the wives are being raped.

The entering homes bit has been said before in the last few days. Possibly even about Libya. I don't know any more.

I've been meaning to look at Yemen. Yemen seems to be the poor relation just now (mis)information wise. (((yemen)))

Yeah definitely lots of rumours etc floating around, nothing seems very clear, just read this on Groandian though... no idea as to the accuracy. Seems to be theories floating about of the regime unleashing criminals to spread panic, but also of protesters freeing political prisoners etc...

"Amer Saad, a political activist from Derna, told al-Jazeera: "The protesters in al-Bayda have been able to seize control of the military airbase in the city and have executed 50 African mercenaries and two Libyan conspirators. Even in Derna today, a number of conspirators were executed. They were locked up in the holding cells of a police station because they resisted, and some died burning inside the building."

Oh now there are rumours about the water supply being poisoned, thats it, a rumour too far for me tonight.

Im also getting a strong sense that many of the English tweets are coming from people listening to calls to that 'radio station'. So one person calls in and claims something, then it gets tweeted by numerous people who are in no position to verify whats being said. And I can only understand the english tweets, who knows what the volume of rumour in arabic is.

From here: http://www.libyafeb17.com/ Transcription of AJA interview with Aamir Saad (Political activist)

Aamir: …Their cousin, their family and neighbours. How would you feel if you were to find your brother or son have been killed by African mercenaries? The protesters in Al Bayda have been able to seize control of the military airbase in the city and have executed 50 African mercenaries and 2 Libyan conspirators. Even in Darnah today, a number of conspirators were executed, they were locked up in the holding cells of a police station because they resisted, and some died burning inside the building. This will be the end of every oppressor who stands with Gaddafi. Gaddafi is over, that’s it, he has no presence here anymore. The eastern regions of Libya are now free regions. If he wants to reclaim it, he will need to bomb us with nuclear or chemical bombs. This is his only option. The people have stood and said they will not go back. And we in Darnah today are standing and camping in AsSahabah square.

News anchor: We need to double check a couple of things with you because you are there, first how are police forces dealing with protesters. The second thing we want to confirm is the report that has been announced by a number of news sources regarding the escape of many prisoners from Al Quwaifeeyah Prison in Benghazi (East Libya) due to riots that occurred in the prison. Is this confirmed news?

Aamir: Those are conspirators and thugs that the regime set free, and gave them 5000 dinars. The regime also promised them another 5000 dinars. But even though they are conspirators and thugs, they remain Libyans. And I know very well that they will NOT side with Gaddafi’s regime. Impossible. Only one of them fully declared his allegiance with the regime and his name is RAJAB AL ADOOLI and he was executed yesterday, he was killed, and it was over! And the things AsSaadi Al Gaddafi said yesterday on Libya’s state channel is rubbish, saying he will return to Benghazi. Benghazi does not belong to his father, for his father to give it to him to rule. Did not his father say that the RULE is in the hands of the people? WE ARE THE PEOPLE! And we tell you Gaddafi one word: LEAVE! You are an oppressor! We do not want you. I am the child of a free police officer, and I am benefitting from your regime, and I still benefit from it, and I still have money in your regime that I am entitled to due to my being the son of a police officer, but I don’t want this money. I want one thing, I want FREEDOM FOR MY COUNTRY. I want to see the flag of Islam fluttering over my country, I want to see you leave! Get out! Game over! Go hide your ugly face! What do you want me to say to him? Please go ahead Ms Khadijah.

News anchor: Thank you Aamir Saad, political activist in Libya, thank you for your contribution with us

Aamir: I want to confirm that Darnah and the eastern regions are now free and we’re just working on Tripoli.

News anchor: We tried to get in touch with the writer and political analyst Abul Qasim Hmeda but were unable to get through to him. Thanks to our guest Aamir Saad

Twitter is nuts again but one thing I do get is:

They've really blown it with the mercenaries.

Techniq's link goes straight to the film. If someone speaks arabic and can contradict it I haven't seen it. I wonder if the Guardian would do that check?

I'm sure I have the phone number of someone in Libya somewhere. He's probably moved at some point in the last 20 years though, hasn't he? :hmm:

Just looking at his tweets. He looks like he is trying his best under difficult circumstances (understatement there) and trying to get news out there, confirm things and stop rumours.

Well its a shame these people are going to have to learn the lessons about the downside of spreading rumours the hard way, hope they are quick learners!

At least we are getting some sense of what callers to that station are saying, but Im afraid the tweets of recent hours have made me less hopeful that the earlier messages about the scale of the protesters takeover of various places are actually true.

Even some tweets about 'new videos just released' arent true, its the same videos we have already seen, possibly mixed in with some much older videos, possibly some new vids but no way Im wading through that lot again like I did with the link posted earlier, only to find little new stuff. And now there is a photo which allegedly shows government thugs burning part of a hospital but for all I know its other people burning a completely different sort of building.

@ BA. I know.

I'm inclined to think he/she/they are doing a pretty good job actually. It's not like they will have had much experience of tweeting an uprising before. There is nothing in the way of int'l media there. Big responsibility for them.
