Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

@Cyrenaican (Libyana Americana) "It's been reported from #Benghazi that internal police are killing the injured in Jala Hospital #Libya #Feb17"

Where are Al Jazeera??
This isn't Tunisia or Egypt - it's the north african version of North Korea! No journalists, no mercy, just straight up murder.

People, please spread the word about what is going on! Don't wait around for the BBC or AJE to show it (I am trawling twitter, focussing on info from the contacts I have built up over the last few weeks)

Libyan rapper Ibn Thabit - "Call to the Libyan Youth"

Rough translation, provided by http://sunduqedunia.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/ibn-thabit-call-to-the-libyan-youth/

They said Libya is not like Egypt and Tunisia
True, the martyrs that have died before are more than Egypt and Tunisia.
The unemployment rate is higher than Egypt and Tunisia
The poor are more than Egypt and Tunisia
They are right
Libya is not like Egypt and Tunisia.

***

they said we’re trying to stir up trouble,
enough of this idle talk
if you don’t want to free your country,
just leave it, go elsewhere.
don’t speak about the grandchildren of the mujahideen
don’t speak about Gaddafi staying longer
then Zein el Abdeen
our aim is liberation
minds and hearts
and our message will reach those
who thumb their prayer-beads in the mosques
and those who sit smoking in cafes
and the downtrodden will rise up
and show their anger
those eking out a living
counting the costs
these are people who want freedom
the people who want justice
and there are a lot of them
and the reason they are so many:

the ignorant colonel

the whole nation wants change
and we have to be ready to fight for it
as long as the tamil tigers have fought

they said Libya is not like Egypt and Tunisia…

one, two, three
not afraid for his life
from four to six
enough of this fitna
at the seventh hour
the goverment will understand
eight, nine
repeat this sound, my voice travels to you
everybody wants to know what this is
close your eyes
listen to the martyrs of Bu Sleem
forty years – enough.
you can’t say this phrase inside our country.
this is the freedom of the Jamahiriya
the democracy of many people sitting on many chairs
the nonsense you spout, the words you twist
rotting the students minds
the money you steal away
this is you giving power to the people
by tarnishing the country’s image

the libyan people have honor,
the libyan people have morals,
the libyan people are true
the libyan people pray and bless the name of the prophet
and one fifth of the libyan people have memorized the quran
what gives you the idea that the libyan people would willingly follow the devil?
our grandparents with rifles and on horses
fought against oppression and injustice
and now we with heart and soul
must come out and fight every kind of ugliness
the libyan people want to live
the libyan people have ambition
libyan people know that after Muammer will come his offspring
and they will repeat the same disasters
these are the same dogs who revolt us
and the one who wants to see the end of this in his lifetime
must be ready to sacrifice his life
sacrifice his blood to be rid of his burden
for the martyrs at bu sleem -
what was their crime?
those who died “for no reason”
no, they were martyrs

shabab, this is our country
this is our time
let them see our rage
under this pressure
the heat reaching boiling point
how long are we going to stay
waiting for change
waiting for the donkeys
to feel pity for us and throw us a few scraps

the thing they fear most is seeing us standing shoulder to shoulder
they want to crumble us into pieces
into easterners and westerners
let us both easterners and westerners topple him
with one voice, in one go
the evil will leave us
and we will have the freedom to speak
we will see how much conscience we have

he has tortured millions
stolen billions
our country’s gdp is less than the price of some cars
his children and his friends have villas like palaces
and those of us who wants simple housing
has to wait in line

you don’t have to do anything
to be taken in by the security forces
the one who does the crime doesn’t have to be the one who pays
this is the modern age,
injustice is closer to them than their hand
and what is needed is for you to do what is needed

i have a message for you
this is the chance you dreamed about
so you can live standing up on your feet
not on your knees

A special call to the shabab of Tripoli
go out on 17 February
the army will all be in the east
and god give us victory…

[note:

eastern & western - most of the protests (and murders) have been in the east of Libya. Tripoli is in the west.

shabab = youth

Al Jaz is reporting at least 50 dead in two days of protests. Gaddafi doesn't fuck about. On the plus side if this spreads and succeeds we may see our first despot hung from a lamp post. I can't see this bastard being allowed to go and live by the seaside

(Edit to add. Al Jaz now reporting 75 dead)

I was trying to find a tweet from yesterday. Along the lines of

@media we ask you to show what is happening in Libya not to scare Ghaddafi, we know he doesn't care, but to witness the slaughter.

I can't really see him & his sons getting caught out (plenty of places will host billionaires) and in reality it will be a lot more dirt-poor youth who are dead by the end of this, but lynching people that isn't really the point - see the lyrics above... ^^^

Toz, toz fel Gaddafi = Go to hell, Gaddafi

Compilation of footage from yesterday (Thursday 17th Feb)

Internal security office set ablaze in Banghazi.

Also the guardian reports that Al Bayda has been taken by revolutionaries

Anti-government protesters have seized control of the eastern Libyan city of al-Bayda after they were joined by some local police, two separate Libyan exile groups said on Friday.

"Al-Bayda is in the hands of the people," Giumma el-Omami of the Libyan Human Rights Solidarity group told Reuters.

"The city is out of the control of the [Muammar] Gaddafi regime," said Fathi al-Warfali of the Libyan Committee for Truth and Justice.

The reports, which the two groups said were based on their own telephone contacts with the city of some 250,000 people, could not be independently verified.

Slghtly bizarre development!?

@OmarAlmu5tar (Omar A.) "Witnesses also notice Asian Mercenaries #Libya #feb17"

@ShababLibya (LibyanYouthMovement) "will need an update on the use of north korean and bangledeshi mercenaries what the hell is he playing at #Libya #Feb17"

Protest, Libyan Embassy London 2pm.

Given the very hostile US relations with Libya why are they not making more of this? This is their chance to show they're on democracies side? (I know the answer really)

Mercenaries? wtf?

IIRC, one of the dictators in Congo-Brazzaville (ie not DRC, the former French Congo) recruited mercs to help him hold on to power after he lost an election.

It led to a pretty nasty civil war.

As for the Libyan masses, may g-d help them.

Mercenaries? wtf?

Yesterday there were reports of non-arabic-speaking, dark-skinned (ie sub-saharan) people attacking protesters - apparently from Chad or elsewhere (people aren't sure). Today there are reports of North Korean and Bangladeshi mercenaries. Have no real way of verifying these reports, but reports seem to come from different sources.

IIRC Gadaffi has a track record of funding various militias in Chad and Sudan ... and all round the world for that matter. He also might have concerns about his own Libyan police and soldiers not wanting to shoot their own people or worrying about having to live in Libya after he has gone.

From Twitter. We may yet see them swinging from lamposts
Reports telling of #Bayda being in uproar, protesters are numerous and coming after #Gaddafi's son. #Libya #Feb17

Also reports of the airport in Bayda being bulldozed by protestors to stop military forces landing. Huffington post reports mercs from Chad being used. Also reports of 100.000 carrying coffins at funerals in Benghazi

Bangladesh and DPRK are both people's republics - maybe Ghaddafi has old links with them? When will the Irish republican brigade be over to help him out, Idris?

I fear a very high bodycount. The Libya regime a lot more closed off than Egypt and likely to be more comfortable with shooting their own people.

Anyone any ideas about how deep and widespread antipathy to the regime is?

I heard themselves alone will be bringing Jack Straw with them - after all, he described The Lion of Tripoli as a 'statesman'.

Not that this is a fit subject to joke about, of course.

Pathetic cheerleaders for Ghadaffi are fit targets for ridicule imo.

Given that MG's attempt to take Chad was a fiasco, there may will be Chadians who chose the wrong side living in Libya now, who can't go back home and so are depending on MG carrying on in office.
