Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

I used to run into a lad in Castlebar who worked for oil companies as a geologist. He'd been all over the middle east, and he said that Libya was the most westernised of all the arab countries he'd been to. It will be very interesting indeed to see how this one turns out.

As in Egypt - the determination and courage of the people confronting this murderous regime is amazing.
 
Reports of police joining protesters in the city of Al Marj in Northeastern Libya and the port city of Darnah on the East. This is beginning to look unstoppable.

No signs of serious protests in Tripoli, though there are pro demonstrations there with Gaddafi himself attending. I'm not familiar with the demographics of Libya though I suspect there might be some tribal or sectoral divisions between Tripoli and other cities such as Benghazi
 
A couple of tweets I saw said everyone is waiting for his neighbour to go out first in Tripoli and some small gatherings are beginning to take shape.

There is a fierce battle over the eastern Libyan city of Bayda, the Reuters news agency reports. Two Libyan exile opposition groups earlier claimed that that the city had been taken over by anti-government protesters who were joined by local police forces, but now it appears that government "militias" have been reinforced and are clashing with residents, who are fighting back "with any weapons they could find."

I've seen one tweet, that mercenaries from CHAD being paid $12k to put their skills to good use in Benghazi the name of Gaddafi.

Different time and different place. Hama involved large scale shelling of an isolated and resisting city. Hama was Syria's Dublin Easter rising. An ill considered uprising that failed to spread, went down to heroic defeat and became a legend. Hama was also besieged for a month before the massacre.

If reports of police and military forces siding with demonstrators is to be believed this is a very different situation. The uprising has already spread to various parts of the country. Gaddafi's son is trapped in a military barracks. 3 cities are liberated. The security forces are splintering. If these reports are correct, this could be the end for Gaddafi.

(I hope they get his son)

[nb Benghazi (pop. 700,000 & Libya's second largest city after Tripoli) is about 120 miles (3 hr drive) west of Bayda (pop. 200,000 & Libya's 3rd largest city). Both of these are in the east of the country - eg From Benghazi it is a 600 mile / 13 hr drive to Tripoli in the west]

I think the story of Hama will be on all our minds if and when this Arab uprising spreads to Syria. I compared Hama to the Easter rising, As any republican can tell you. the Easter rising was unpopular at the time but quickly became a legend that came back to haunt the British. I think Hama will come back to haunt Assad when his day comes

Lot of reports of police and army coming over - need to be sure on these. Don't think army would like the firing the reported mercenaries are now up to.

The police and army will have to revolt too surely? Maybe this is partly why mercenaries brought in. In case police and army turned?

tripoli surrounded almost - mao was right! People were saying gaddafi fucked up by chucking people into tripoli thinking the real threat would come from there. It didn't.
