Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

I'd be laughing if it wasn't so serious...

I wonder how BaE systems got on with the trade fair in Abu Dhabi this week, bet they sold plenty of crowd dispersal technology....

I know what you mean but I tend to believe that humour and laughter are even more vital when serious shit is going on as when everything is calm and rosy.

As for BAE, its not just the arms trade event, they and others have been doing the rounds of countries in the region as part of Camerons travels.

Journalists are now allowed into eastern Libya so there should be some interesting reports today. The BBC guy said that the people are in control and even organising the traffic wearing makeshift uniforms. It seems like he only now controls parts of Tripoli and some southern towns.

He also stated that most of the regular army now supports the revolution and he only has the military support of some crack units

I don't think Gaddafi has any biological or chemical weapons. Unless he has a secret stash away from UN inspectors. After the invasion of Iraq in 2003 he freaked out thinking he was going to be next and so decided to cooperate with the UN in destroying any weapons of mass destruction. It was because of this that sanctions were lifted and he was brought back into the fold as the rogue gone straight.

Talk of Gaddafi using biological and chemical weapons against the Libyan people. Someone has to take this cunt out soon.

Do try to avoid hysterics please. The fact is Gaddafi is rapidly running out of options. He has lost control of most of the country and more towns and cities are falling regularly. Sure he can and will unleash more death but his military capacity is declining not increasing. Therefore it is unlkely we will see anything more than the same terrible vengeance he has unleashed so far. What more could he do that he hasn't done thus far? He seems to have control of Tripoli so expect more atrocities there as his forces fight to the death. But the writing is on the wall and he is probably finished

There's a page here on the Anonymous site but I'm not quite sure what the purpose of it is: http://www.anonnews.org/?p=press&a=item&i=532

Who are we supposed to fax this to? And if it is for a Libyan readership why is most of it written in English?

In the comments section there is further info:
Join chat at irc.anonops.ru #oplibya for instructions, but indeed, faxing is not possible if the phone system is down obviously.

Phew, that's alright then. Don't know what all the fuss is about.

Nice, the festival of the oppressed has begun in Libya:

9.05am: The BBC's Jon Leyne, who was in Cairo reporting on the fall on Hosni Mubarak is another journalist who has managed to get into eastern Libya. He describes scenes of delirious joy with opposition militias are in control and anyone associated with the regime has fled, he says.

It's going to be street by street fighting isn't it in Tripoli. How quickly this happens depends on how involved the military want to become in the conflict. After Tripoli I suppose he will fly to one of his last remaining bastions in the south of the country.

Sounds like the UK government is going to get some stick for being slow to organise escape for our citizens from Libya, with a variety of other governments being well ahead in this regard.

Assume that the lack of media/solid confirmations of events, and the fact that the situation escalated rapidly during a weekend is a big factor in this.

not sure how much sympathy I have for British people stuck in Libya. That the dictatorship might descend into chaos comes with the territory if you decide to go get rich in a dictatorship, and the locals can't just sod off if things get hairy.

Some of them are holiday makers though... there is a witness statement from a tourist on the Guardian site... this will be an adventure holiday they won't forget in a hurry

What's happening here? It's being shown on Sky News... Even I think they don't even know...

I think it is just an indication of the kind of repression going on in Libyan streets. I am still cynical about claims of "mercenaries" however. There is no reason to think they are anything but Libyan security forces.
