Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

Al Jazeera is the state broadcaster of Qatar.

Why would you have ever trusted the state of Qatar?

Not the right word, but I considered Al Jazeera a better source of world news than say the BBC or whatever. At the end of the day I suppose it depends on the story really. Being bombed by the US can only add so much credibility.

Another contemptible misuse of the verb 'to refute' (from Ern's link):

A senior rebel leader has refuted the Human Rights Watch claims.

"This is not the case in the liberated areas," rebel spokesman Mahmud Jibril told reporters in Brussels.

But the rebel spokesman provides (or at least it not quoted as providing) no evidence to refute the HRW claims: hence they are not refuted.

Nice to see that Ern is keen on Human Rights Watch, a great liberal institution also highly critical of Chavez.

I'm not keen on anything a Liberal like you is into, chief.

Ad infinitum ad nauseum.

Tarquin LOL.

You're the wealthy ex-pat 'reading sociology books for work', you horny-handed son of toil.

Wealthy? Riiiight. Ex-pat? No. I am in no way ex-patriated, still a resident of my home country thankyouverymuch. And I read sociology for work because.... TADAAA - that's what they pay me to do you fucking plank.

You don't have to work with your background.

My background? You mean the fact that my entire family on both sides are w/c people, me being the only the second out of a huge number of relatives to go to uni? That background? Or are you referring to the 40k student loans I had to take on to get where I am today - ie being unemployed as of next Thursday? Or the one where I worked pretty much full-time through my studies to actually afford living in the city where I studied, wiping arses and pulling taps on alternate days? Or those jobs where you worked 30 hours in one go, slept for 6 hours and then worked another 30 hours?

Fuck off ern. Honestly, why do you even bother?

I've not heard whether the following has actually lead to the channels going off the air:

Egypt court orders Libyan channels off air
(AFP) – 2 days ago
CAIRO — An Egyptian court on Monday ordered the state-owned satellite operator Nilesat to take 14 Libyan state channels off the air, the official MENA news agency reported.
The Cairo Administrative Court ordered the channels off air, after lawsuits filed by Libyan nationals and Egyptian lawyers who say the channels are being used by Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to incite violence against rebels trying to overthrow him.
The rebel leadership based in the eastern city of Benghazi has repeatedly accused Kadhafi of using state media as a weapon in the war that has left thousands dead.
In June, NATO -- which has been conducting air strikes against Kadhafi's forces under a UN-mandated operation -- denied that it had struck the country's state broadcaster in Tripoli, following an accusation by a Libyan information ministry official.
Nilesat, which broadcasts more than 600 television channels, says that, as of 2009, it reached 40 million households.

About time!
US recognizes Libyan rebels as Libyan government
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Obama administration has decided to formally recognize Libya's main opposition group as the country's legitimate government. The move gives foes of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi a major financial and credibility boost.

Diplomatic recognition of the council means that the U.S. will be able to fund the opposition with some of the more than $30 billion in Gahdafi-regime assets that are frozen in American banks.

US recognises Libyan rebels as Libyan government, eh? Shame the Libyans don't then really, isn't it?

On a completely unrelated note, how long did it take the US to recognise Pinochet's military dictatorship as the legitimate government of Chile?
