Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

on Al-Jaz they were commenting on why Libyan forces don't like fighting at night.

It seems that they don't have any kit for such action and France refused to sell them any night vision equipment in 2007

Can modern aircraft bomb at night? If so surely that has to be the idea time to strike

I don't know, but Apache helicopters can operate at night.

From the news:

WASHINGTON — The U.S. prepared to a launch a missile attack on Libyan air defenses
...
An attack against those defenses with Navy sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles was planned for later Saturday, one official said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of military operations.

Should have murdered that mad cunt two decades ago for Lockerbie...

I wonder if Gaddafi is removed from power, whether then we might finally learn of the truth behind Pan Am 103 and the 259 passengers and crew who were killed in the bomb.

Libya rebel leader: I have evidence Gaddafi ordered Lockerbie
The former Libya justice minister says he has documents that implicate Colonel Gaddafi personally in the Lockerbie bombing.
Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of the provisional rebel government in Benghazi and Libya’s former justice minister, said he had evidence of Gaddafi's involvement in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie.

"The orders were given by Gaddafi himself," he told Rob Crilly.

libyan kit probably can't see much at night.
modern jets can do all sorts of hi tech stuff night in a desert is perfect conditions for night vison gear its very cold anything moving or people is very hot and theirs no cover:(
seen what an apache can do to 500plus men caught in the open. its a video game slaughterfest:(and that was 20 plus years ago.

The serial killer, if he is anyone, is Gaddafi!

You don't have to be pro Gaddafi to oppose Western intervention. I opposed the invasion of Iraq, does that make me pro Saddam? No. If Saddam today was facing a revolution of the Iraqi people I would support that revolution. Overthrowing Gaddafi is the task of the Libyan people not NATO.

UN, not Nato ... anyhow, the Libyan people are not up to defeating Gaddafi without help. Would you deny them the help they need? It seems from what you have written you would.

If Gaddafi manages to take Benghazi, which without the enforcement of the UN resolution he would it seems definately do, then the rebels are toast. The revolt is over - full stop!

Go on then, illuminate me, what would you have the United Nations do?

Mind there own fucking business or at least first deal with far more grievous cases of human rights abuses that ARE actually occurring in other countries. And if they are so worried about Gaddafy's regime why did they send British police out to train his police not so long ago? Or sign trade agreements with him?

By the way you never answered my question. Do you really believe that this is being done for the benefit of the Libyan people?

No, you don't get off that lightly. What would you have the UN do about the civil war right now in Libya in which the Gaddafi regime is slaughtering its opponents and the rebels are asking for outside help?

What previous governments have sanctioned in respect of the Gaddafi regime, including training and BP oil deals and releasing Abdel Bassett Ali Al Megrahi, is history, what the UN allies have to deal with is what is happening today, now.

By the way you never answered my question. Do you really believe that this is being done for the benefit of the Libyan people?

This is being done by the international community under the auspices of the UN, for the benefit of the Libyan people, to balance the forces in favour of the rebels, and to rid the Libyan people and the region of a much hated dictator.

perhaps what makes this different to other places is that Gadaffi has no allies. After all his decades in power there was no-one at the UN to argue his case.

Even a slave regime like Burma has allies who can prevent concerted UN action.
