James Purnell Resigns: Wants Brown to Go

Why do people carry on being 'Blairites'? I mean, it's not like the messianic cunt is ever going to return to take an interest in their bitter, fucked up car crash careers, is it?

Yet the papers bang on about it all the time.

Its bigger than Blair, its the right wing of the party.

Diane Abbott's take on the Purnell resignation: "a coup from the right" [she means attempted coup, surely], this Blairite attack might even rally Labour Party support for Gordon Brown

Any chance of Purnell's CLP deselecting him before the next General Election?

I know it means very little in the great scheme of things but sometimes it's just about being petty and vindictive. ;)

Tsk. Sometimes you really don't seem suited to the Speegy Geebees.

I suspect he'll be seen as brave. To be honest, I haven't taken much notice of him, from what I've read on here he seems like a cunt, however he is only saying what the rest of the country believes. Brown is a cantankerous old git with no personality or charisma to speak of and has no hope of winning the next election.

James Purnell - the new Geoffrey Howe. But possibly more of a cunt.

i don't see him as a Geoffrey Howe, I doubt in 20 years people will be talking about how Purnell was the final straw - he's a side issue, he wasn't a big enough name to put the knife in

I think Brown will survive the weekend, everyone's expecting bad election results, so the damage has already been done. Brown would prefer to lose an election than never have fought one as a leader, so best option, call an election, and enjoy seeing the big names who haven't backed them, lose their seats

He wants to be seen as brave, he'll get swept away though, long time till monday - lots of other stuff.

There is a rumour that Brown might get him back to do something!

Wonder what Ministers do the night they resign? Dear Hazel went up North to be with 'her people'. I doubt that Purnell has a 'people' to go to. Hotel/Belt/Orange?

I can just imagine the conversation.

"Hey Tony, you know that job you used to do. Fancy giving it another go? Yeah, yeah, I've had a laugh but after I saved the world I'd like to retire satisfied with a job well done. Good luck!"

I don't really understand why people are happy- he would surely only have done this to better position himself for the post-Brown reshuffle, no?

I think you're right - tho let us also take pleasure in the moment.

He has just done what no other 'Blairite' has dare do, he's quit and stood up for his 'principles.' He's done what Michael Portillo never dared do v major, and regretted ever since. He's positioned himself as the person to take on that mantle.

If Brown hangs on somehow, he's just lost a few months extra salary (and the opprobrium of pushing through not exactly popular welfare benefit changes), but he'll be a leading candidate immediately after that.

If Brown goes now, he'll be the only likely Blairite candidate. And he wont win (it'll be Johnson) but he'll be the next home Secretary instead. Again, not a bad place to start from, even if/when Labour still lose.

e2a: I see David Milliband has said he wont be resigning, clear run for Purnell.

If you want to marry him just ask

I think he's made sure no one will ever have him in the back room rather than pushing himself to the front. He is fucked No runs anywhere.
