Meanwhile; here's Mary Lou on yesterday's ceremony to remember more victims of Ireland's shameful misogyny and religious extremism

“We mark as a matter of the respect the passing of the women incarcerated in the Magdalene laundries who are buried here. We have seen a triumph of human courage, of dignity of women who were disrespected in such a base, relentless and vicious way,” she said in Glasnevin cemetery today.

“We have met over the course of years the consequences of the hardship, of the abuse, of the neglect of these women, all of which was overseen by the state. The buck stops with the state.

“There is an issue around the McAleese Report, around the Commission of Investigation, around the story that has not yet been told. We are still waiting to hear the full story of the Magdalene laundries and the Mother and Baby Homes north and south, east and west. There is a lot of work that needs to be done.

“We have to reconcile and confront the realities of what the state did. But the instincts of the state is to play down the significance of what happened. That’s not good enough. What we need is the truth.”

i'd love to see the look on your face if he became taoiseach :)

It'll just be a bloody mess after I have spent ten hours smacking my head off a desk.

It's not that Adams is murdering terrorist he's a pseudo leftist posturing centre left murdering terrorist.

A thirty year campaign of terror that ends with the election of a pound shop Tony Blair is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah say what you like about the American elections I am fairly certain no one ordered the execution of a single mother or covered up their nieces sexual assault.

Dunno about that. Didn't Trump allegedly rape his ex wife?

I think Adams belongs in the past. There's too much baggage with the man. But with the new additions to SF, I do believe they could be a credible alternative. And it's taken a while for me to come round to that. Still, I don't have the vote there - sadly.

A very quick google (cause I'm not dwelling on his sex life) says she retracted it and considered it "metaphorical" rape.

I agree about Adams but SF are a cult of personality. I think Adams will not quit until he gets a turn at the wheel in govt.

However the party are far too opportunistic. Anti Privatisation but voted for PPP in the north. Anti bin charges but voted for them in Sligo. Anti the Iraq war but scurried up to stormount when summoned by Bush

It's all about compromise; isn't it? You won't get a hard left Govt in Ireland because it just wouldn't go down with the majority, IMHO. You may well get a left leaning Govt (hopefully) but not with Adams in charge.

Oh yeah and don't be taking any stick from the boys about D4 or accents. Dublin (and indeed, Ireland) has a myriad of accents. Who apart from the usual suspects actually gives a fuck?

I know roight it's completely loike unfocking acceptable.

Actually, a fellow Dubliner is presenting a programme next week which I shall actually watch. Brendan O' Carroll (not my cuppa normally) has a doc on about the Rising. My Family at War is on BBC2, Weds at 9pm.

I miss read that as Brendan O Connor, an equally unappealing prospect

Ugh. Horrible man.

I don't get O' Carroll's sense of humour but his family history is interesting; for me that's the appealing bit.

Years ago when I first started out I worked for a horrible company that did film post production. O Carroll had made a film of book "Sparrows Trap" he plays a Boxer called Sparrow who gets on the wrong side of some gangsters. The gangsters were mainly played by 2FM DJs (Ian Dempsey is many things intimidating is not one of them)

Anyway Carroll defrauded a lot people crew weren't paid, suppliers defaulted on. Eventually this company realised they'd never be paid and seized the negative. Horrible nasty company but having watched some of Sparrows Trap they did humanity a service...

Allegedly. Allegedly!

Brendan O'Carroll has been open and honest about what happened, which I would sincerely doubt you ever could be.

I believe it ended in tears... and his bankruptcy. But he chose not to whinge and gurn about it. He got on with building a hugely successful, cross-cultural phenomenon.

Yeah well he hasn't got around to repaying all those debts alot of crew here wouldn't touch him and the Mrs Brown movie when it was filming back here.

I'm sure you love Mrs Browns boys it's about as authentically Irish as you are...

Incidentally CR job going for you

As i've stated before on here, I've never been a fan of O'Carroll's comedy / niche - just as I've never been a fan of, say, Daniel O'Donnell's music. That does not stop me seeing them both as decent men.

I suspect your position on B O'C is just one more illuminating expression of your liberal-lefty-wannabe, anti-working-class prejudices.

I don't see o Carroll as decent man cause he screwed people I know out of money.

His "comedy" is sexist derivative cliched crap I'd say one thing for him he's very green recycling his and everyone else's jokes.

The faux Irish plastic paddy crap written by a man who's lived in Florida for decades and performed in a UK studio is why it appeals to you.

8den; seriously - please use "allegedly" when making your claims. Just in case. But yeah; there's no harm in pointing out his "comedy" is archaic. It certainly doesn't make you or the millions of us who don't care for the man "anti working class". If anything; it's millionaire BOC who's anti working class - serving up vile stereotypes for public consumption.
