No, Johnny. It's even worse than that. The mayor of Hartlepool is a monkey.

You`re not the only one who finds it suspicious Idris -----

I'm not quite going that far, I'm just filing it under "things that make you go hmmmmm".

Today's Gruniaud quotes the hotel manager as saying that Rado asked for directions to the roof and then went up alone.

Maybe he was suffering from personal stuff that made him jump?

Or maybe he was pushed.

Did anyone see an account of where in the carpark he was found?

'cause if he was thrown off the roof, he'd be more likely to land away from the building than if he just jumped off the edge.

British Soldiers Refuse to Fight: Indo-Asian News Service

LONDON, 31 March 2003 — Two British servicemen have been sent home from the Middle East after refusing to fight in the war against Iraq, The Sunday Times reported. They said they would refuse to fight because of the civilian casualties being caused by the US-British attack. They face possible court martial and up to two years in jail for disobeying orders. The two British soldiers are from 16 Air Assault Brigade, a frontline unit, which has been engaged in heavy fighting in southern Iraq. Their lawyer says they were ordered to return to the brigade’s barracks in Colchester, Essex, after raising their objections earlier this month. The cases were confirmed this weekend by Justin Hugheston-Roberts, a solicitor advocate who chairs Forces Law, a nationwide group of 22 law firms that acts for service personnel and their families. “These cases are being handled by a very experienced lawyer,” he said. Gilbert Blades, a Lincoln-based lawyer, said the Ministry of Defense was trying to hush up the cases because it feared a public relations disaster.

Update

'Gaby Rado

Gaby's body was flown back overnight by the American Air Force from Northern Iraq to an airbase near Frankfurt. His coffin was accompanied on the flight by his producer and cameraman. They were met by Guy Ker and Deborah Rayner from C4N who had flown out from London last night. Guy and Deborah remain with the coffin and they hope to bring it home to London either tonight or tomorrow.

Terry Lloyd

Terry's body remains in the morgue in Basra Hospital and there seems no way that it can be recovered until British troops control Basra. We continue to be in contact with the Red Cross and others with representatives in Basra to see if they can do anything to help.

Fred Nerac and Hussein Osman

There is still no conclusive news of the whereabouts of Fred and Hussein. In particular we can find no definitive evidence that they were taken into Basra although that was the initial assumption. We are still trying to visit the site of the initial attack to see what can be discovered there. We have found some more eye-witnesses who came upon the scene immediately after the attack on the ITN vehicles and they are helping us piece together the story.'

you can get it through az's main site

thanks. they mentioned that it was published in the Sunday Times - but nothing on the website. Why isn't this BIG NEWS (as if I didn't know) Has it been covered in UK and US media?

Interesting article. I also read that US Congress is muttering about how right it would be if reconstruction of Iraq could be handled by US companies only, not through the UN since the UN didn't support the USA's position on Iraq. (sorry if point has been mentioned before)

BBC are now reporting that the 43 soldiers were in fact US and British forces killed in the past 24 hours.

No confirmation as yet.

If this turns out to be true vim, and let's not forget that the Iraqi's have been a damn sight more truthful than our own government during this war, then that might mean that the Iraqi's have taken over from the Americans as the number one killers of British troops in the Gulf!!

maximillian ping's links above to news that gordon brown wants UK and US to become the closest of trading partners...
(that link again http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2902167.stm)
so much for "out with blair and in with brown": this is why UK is in this war, to quote blair "it is in britain's best interests" - obviously those interests are strcitly economic - we'll never joinj the eurozone, so we better bend over for Uncle Sam...

-classic profit over people scenario-

NBC sacks respected journo Peter Arnett for being "unpatriotic" - apparantly his crime was to suggest on Iraqi TV that the war isn't quite going to plan

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/2903503.stm

Peter Arnett was sacked today by NBC, MSNBC and National Geographic Explored for his stupid comments. The decision to sack him was basically made by the American people. All three organizations were deluged with negative email about Peter. They had no choice but to fire his worthless ass. Poor, poor Peter has made many such blunders in the past and was previously fired by CNN (believe it or not) for similar remarks.

Then today MSNBC claimed (on air) that Geraldo Rivera, currently with Fox News and embedded with the 101st Airborne in Iraq was told to leave because he gave away (on air) classified information. Geraldo was formerly employed by none other than MSNBC. The claim was totally not true. In fact Geraldo appeared on Fox News live a few hours later, live, still embedded with the 101st Airborne calling MSNBC scumbag liars or something to that effect.

Live TV is so much more interesting and believable than fictional movies. Geraldo appearing live interviewing troops with the 101st Airborne and a public info officer with the 101st Airborne is “Network” in real time.

Please take your comment elsewhere. This is supposed to be a thread about the war as it is developing. Or so Lock and Light delights in informing us before he leaps in with another comment.

But seriously, it is; can we try and keep this thread open for fresh developments please?

You probably won't bother, but if you were to check back over the endless pages of this thread you'll see that I'm not as guilty as you think, and certainly not as guilty as many others.

Does it bother me. No.

Does it bother you, apparently.

Does it bother Mike. No more, I think, than a lot of other irritances, most certainly not all caused by me.

So much for the 'land of the free' then.

Another honest journalist bites the dust. I don't think it's Iraq that needs liberating, it's the minds of the american public!
