Saw black midi last night

A bit flat tbh.

Matt K-K still away. Morgan Simpson still a beast on the skins. Played a set of oldies and throwbacks, and they played a blinder. But... they’ve gotten so good at what they do that it was kinda like watching spinning plates. Really impressive but ultimately a bit boring. I miss the urgent hungry edge from before, when they knew that what they’d made was important and couldn’t fucking wait to make sure everyone else realised this too,

I never consider it a good sign when the crowd starts clapping their arms above their head. Denotes some degree of boredom and enthusiastic gee-up, get on with it attitude. But also lots of serious smiling nodding heads through the crowd so maybe I’m wrong.

I am sure a few on here have seen him over the years but presume this is part of a tour but this is supposedly his 5000th gig!!!!!

For all you up-to-the-minute fans of cutting-edge new music, there's a hot new band called the Sonics that are playing Bristol, London, Glasgow and Leeds in October:

I imagine it may not quite be the full original lineup.

The Early Mornings last night.
They're good.
I used to think of them as one of the best new Manchester bands until they moved down south. Always seem like good eggs too.

Anyway, little tour happening at the start of October:

Clear Channel seem like fun:

They are very good eggs hitmouse . I wish they’d get more busy with their career, especially since they moved down here to make their fortunes etc. I hear that their EP is selling well anyway.

Drummer is in about 6 other bands now and is also writing and singing in one of them. Heard a couple of those tunes, very catchy and cute. I’ll report if they ever play live.

Meatraffle tomorrow.

New Order at the O2 last night. I probably wasn't in the mood - but it felt slightly 'flat' to my liking. Definitely better when I saw them at Glastonbury in 2005 and Ally Pally in 2017 (?). That's not to say there weren't some highlights - did an encore of Joy Divison stuff - but not comparable to when they had Hooky still in the band.

Meatraffle tomorrow.
Meatraffle were excellent and seem to have been rehearsing. he dancer (as seen on their video) really complements the performance)

White Devil disco also a pleasing find

Kuntessa was.... a good opportunity to pop into the beer garden for some fresh air

I reckon they’re a better band since having James on drums. More groovy, which lifts but doesn’t counter the melancholy of Warren’s mournful trumpet. They rattle along now in a much more interesting and pleasing way.

The dancer is Ollie. I agree he really does bring an extra element to the band that is now integral and complementary.

It’s quite a complex band, lots going on. On a good night it’s glorious but I’ve seen them play whenever it’s was like w badly stitched patchwork: all the bits there but not fitting together properly. Sometimes that seems down to Warren being shambolic, sometimes it’s just not coming together. Sometime it’s the crap sound, as was the case tonight (saw them at the George Tavern) Sound man called in sick 30 minutes before doors , new bloke had never heard the band and never worked that room. Band struggled. Sweat struggled too (I find that I need to be in the right headspace and mood for Sweat to land properly for me, when they do, man oh man it’s good but otherwise, meh. Bad sound didn’t help).

White Devil Disco. They’re getting better for sure. But as ever with a band made and led by a bass player, it’s kinda one big rhythm section with songs and tunes following on behind. And Joe’s vocals aren’t stronger enough to carry what songs they do have, he swallows most of what he’s singing. They groove good and hard and I enjoy them, I like the noise they make but they don’t have any songs. Can you remember one song from last night? I’ve seen them several times and I couldn’t hum one, don’t find any of them especially familiar from one gig to the next. But I keep seeing them because I think they have promise.

After that is the best live band in the world. Skating Polly are playing Omeara in January. This time a London venue I can actually get into. I had to miss their last two tours as the venues weren't even remotely accessible. If you like a bit of eclectic punk this is unmissable.

Saw Naked Lungs last night.

I keep calling them Naked Lung, which is in fact a better name than Naked Lungs.

Heavy on the rhythms, which is cool cos the drummer is ace, rattling and skeetering through fast riffs and rim shot percussion (I had to look twice to check if he was using double kick drums). Bass is spot on but not clinical. Sometimes he’s playing stuff that makes me wonder where it’s coming from. They got some stuff on a tape but not so much it intrudes. Singer needs more vocal work, needs to sing lower in his body not from his neck. It’s his band so everyone kinda plays to him, that’s okay. Guitarist …. well I couldn’t tell if he was as good as the others cos he’s got so many pedals it looks like he’s playing a church organ. Bass too. What’s with this fad for a disco floor full of pedals and buttons these days. Pick a lane ffs and do the post production in the studio.

Set was strong and interesting but I wanted more hooks, and riffs and maybe more tunes. I don’t think it was the sound in the room deadening that (soundie at the Shacklewell knows her stuff for sure). I can’t recall a single track today.

I liked them, not enough to recommend them yet but I’d definitely see them again and pay attention to what they do next.

I suspect they get a joyous and raucous crowd at home and have gotten into the habit of leaning into that, and a jaded London weeknight audience at a free show just isn’t going to do the job of shoving and prompting them along to their best performance.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs at the Forum last night.

Great bit of stoner rock or whatever... the Spirit of Sabbath lives..

Great crowd as well.. despite not being much of a 'metaller' I like these people.

If anyone's at a loose end in London tonight, Clear Channel/Agua Viva should be very good I reckon:

CC are super fun disco/funk end of post-punky stuff, Agua Viva is a bit more like something that might be on a David Lynch soundtrack?
