Glastonbury South East Corner

ah. and I confess I'd been confusing her with a him called bez, who's the one mentioned elsewhere.

I gave nude modelling a go in there 11pm Thursday. :D The photography ban didn't seem to be in place then, and there are doubtless now naked photos of me all over the web. Still, in for a penny and all that.

It's safe to say that the person who was modelling when we were in there was somewhat more pleasing on the eye in the altogether than I can only imagine you would have been :p

Bez is the one whose job in the Happy Mondays was to dance, play maracas and take industrial quantities of chemicals. Strangely, he's still standing 20+ years down the line. I reckon he's well pipe and slippers when he's not playing the role he's taken on over the decades.

I'm not convinced by this 'crew bar' game. It's been going on for a few years but this year seemed much more competitive. B9, Acoustic, Avalon and the Green Room all seemed to me to be promoting themselves on exclusive entertainment, insiders only <big benefit: No/few Punters>, cheaper, better, more desirable, exclusive. Is that what it's all about these days?

We are predominately volunteers, without which it wouldn't exist. Can't complain about something that makes volunteering more attractive.

I can see both sides of this - and as someone who always camps public side, am definitely more of an egalitarian 'all in this together' type! But tbh, if Block 9, Avalon and whoever are making their crew bars MORE accessible to ticket holders in a fairly uncontrolled way (ie distributing wristbands to your mates/passing on the details of how to get in to whoever) then I don't see that it's a bad thing. It's not exactly equivalent to differing levels of access dictated by money or whatever Shangri La were doing to limit access to 'Heaven' this time

I'm fairly sure I didn't even go to a public bar once after about my first year or 2 working at glastonbury*, I was always operating on such different timescales to the public that either they pissed me right off by being stupidly drunk as I wanted a first pint at the end of a long shift at midnight or something, or the bars were shut anyway... far better to be able to get a couple of pints in while surrounded by others who were also winding down after working / knew the score than end up lamping some pissed up fuckwit or something.

Besides the crew bars were always where the best parties were to be had at that sort of time anyway - glade did a stonking crew bar one year, avalon was always a bit crap, but better for a quiet pint, and lost vagueness would be open latest of all.

*actually, I have remembered a few meets at the brothers cider bar, so not entirely true.

Avalon bar have always been pretty free with who they let in - which is why their toilets were disgusting!!

I attempted at one point to get backstage Jazz bar toilets and it was like fort knox!

Yeah, I didn't try it but noticed that they seemed a bit tighter than usual with multiple entrances etc

Good to know our systems work! :p

However, a crew wristband would have got you access to West Holts bar at most times over the weekend but you would have needed to go to the bar entrance, not try to get in by the vehicle gates as that's the entrance point into the production area and is much more tightly controlled (working area, etc).

PM me for bar access next year! ;)

We were told that a widespread name in at least one area for 'bar only' passes were "wankers' passes" :D

I had no shame and after a hard day's blagging (the Tuesday before opening) collected several -- cheers to all who helped out! :)

In principle I see where newbie is coming from but I think JTG and free spirit more or less sum up where I come from in practice .... I'm glad one or two bars were distributing wristbands generously. We were able to help out friends on two occasions because of that.

Post 1 on the SE Corner subject generally :

This flatters to deceive.

Its visually interesting, but often over crowded series of bars with a very MotR music policy. I spent quite a bit of time wandering about listening to the music and only Bez's Acid House had anything remotely interesting or cutting edge if 20 year old music can be called cutting edge. The rest was just music often quite down beat.

If you remove the music, the entire place becomes a art museum piece. I would rather they spent less time on the set up and more on music policy.

Has always felt to me that there is something missing.

I see a lot in that post that I agree with. I spent very little time there, the one time I did manage to get in (early hours Monday morning) the crowds were still diabolical -- had to retreat to Wally's Bar to cope! And I bet Friday/Saturday night crowds were even worse ..... I guess you can still enjoy looking around much earlier in the day when numbers are more sensible, but there's a lot less happening (gigs or music) in the daytime.
