Glastonbury 2022

I saw a programme on BBC 2 last night about Glastonbury and Michael and Emily Eavis were saying that they decided to put the fence up because there was one year where there were so many people at ne stage to see the chemical brothers that they were shitting themselves that people would get crushed. It became really unsafe- they realised how packed the festival had become and that they had to restrict numbers for health and safety- thus the super fence.
I saw that, too. I'm sure that they had to control numbers for safety of they wanted to keep going. I suspect there was also an element of wanting to keep out those who weren't willing to pay the high prices, too. Obviously, there's an element of class in that. And maybe it did have the effect of excluding a lot of black kids from Manchester and Liverpool. But I'm struggling to believe the intention was to exclude people of colour, which seemed to be what the poster was implying.

The fence to exclude people of colour is such a ridiculous idea. It was all the posh yogurt weavers from the SW with their camper vans and culturally appropriated dreds they wanted to keep out. The hippies just want to party to techno without dipping into their parents allowances ;)

The traveller parties outside the fences were just as good as the festival in those days

Yeah, 2000 was mental. Awesome but mental. I was up in a cafe on the main drag one morning, and there was this really weird noise. The sound of thousands of people all trying to squeeze up a small ish road enclosed on both sides with stalls. Murmuring, screams, kind of a weird mass panic noise I've never experienced again. People started running up and telling people at either end of the crush to go the other way, and it started to subside. Afterwards some of the big heavy food stalls had been pushed right back from the road at funny angles, so it must have been a proper crush. 2000 was one of the best Glastonburys I've ever been to, but it couldn't ever have happened again.

I've just downloaded what3words. This could be handy.

It could, but fun fact having been through the festival's medical training yesterday, in an emergency they apparently prefer a grid reference from the site map and an area name, as they're easier to make out clearly when spoken over a radio, and they can also cross reference the grid reference with the area you've said to check they match. For everything outside of emergencies though, what3words is fab.

Yeah, 2000 was mental.
2000, the year I decided to go for a wander off-site for a little headspace, only to get a little lost (and unsure where the nearest gate back in was), and have to ask security to give me a bunk over the fence from the roof of their landrover. I landed in King's Meadow to a cheer from onlookers, and a few bruises from the top of the fence :D

Yeah, it was a mad atmosphere that year. My first year working, went by myself. A favourite year, but yeah, couldn't happen like that again.

Cheers, I'm not working this year, so prob won't have a detailed site map (unless they give them out at the Camping Hubs/Info maybe?), but useful to know.

If you'd just wandered down the hill a little bit, the entire fence at the top of William's Field by the King's Meadow had completely come down by the Thursday. To deal with the problem, they had the genteel ladies of Wells Riding Club riding around the perimeter on their horses. We asked them what they were doing once, and they said they'd been asked to come down and ride around the perimeter by Michael Eavis, but had no intention of stopping anyone or even saying anything to anyone. They seemed as bemused at their presence as we did, and were basically just out for a bit of a horse ride.

IMG_20220620_183141.jpgGot my drugs* so I'm all set. I've also been to the launderette today and washed my big sleeping bag, bought some basic booze and food supplies. Now having a bubble bath, will get out and pack soon, the water's going cold.

*I'm of a certain age, which means I picked up my prescription for my 'anti-pee pills' for weak bladder 🤭 (quite useful for avoiding frequent trips to the loo), and I also got some Solpadeine painkillers to pop half an hour before I go to bed, because there's nothing worse than finally lying down and then realising that you're knackered but you can't go to sleep because your feet are absolutely throbbing and painful because you've been on your feet, working and walking and dancing all day and night.

Got a couple of mates planning to go over tonight. I'm intrigued as to whether they make it. They are both experienced in the art of getting into festivals so I fully expect to hear some good news in the morning.

I watched that '50 Years and counting ...' programme last night and had a little pang of jealousy. There's still a bit of me would like to give it one more go but expense / mud / other stuff puts me off these days.

I hope you all have a cracker and I really hope it's sunny. Current forecast is good for the next couple of days but it could get muddy towards the end. I really hope this isn't the case, for Williams feet, if nothing else.

Have a good 'un everyone. If anyone spots it, I left an important part of my mind up by the Stone Circle once. If you find it, please pop it in the post to me, cheers.

Or they could have just booked smaller, less mainstream bands
