Glastonbury 2009

:hmm:The cynic in me says the early deposit is about getting some comfort on sales instead of this last minute nail biting.

But I'm unaware of the characters involved so I'm willing to be told that's unfair on them.

Isn't it actually quite a good idea, the deposit thing? I remember when Bloc weekend did this it was a blessing - we didn't have the money in one go, and it helped us spread the payment.

Yeah, it's good for me for this reason.

Wtf, coldplay better not be headlining Glastonbury.

Who cares, no-one goes for the headliners :D

Problem with EU festivals is that they just don't really do the mental thing quite like the British.

We really know how to get fucked up and go mad in a unique way that the rest of Europe just doesn't do unless you go to a free party.

Get a job and save for a few weeks.

Agreed, after the wonderful Glastonbury I had this year there's no way I'm missing the next one.

hehe

I have a theory that the worst place a festival could be held is France. Far too up their own arses to lose all self diginity for a few days.

I went to a French festival the other year. It was... well, it reminded me of Wireless or Lovebox. It was OK but it lacked a certain je ne said q'oui...

Never seen armed police at a UK / Irish festival myself...

Again, there were armed cops at this one, my mate got busted by them for trying to climb up a reservation to do a short cut leaving, and a nastier bunch of bullying vicious cunts I haven't seen. Made british police look like fucking Dixon.

Yep, the French police have a reputation for being a bunch of cunts. If Rodney King was in France...

Speak for yourself.

Over the years I've seen these people headlining Glastonbury:

Radiohead (twice) , REM, Chemical Brothers, Pulp, Blur, The Prodigy, The Black Crowes, The Cure, Happy Mondays, Gil Scott-Heron and loads of others.

If the headliner's one of my favourite bands, it can make a Glastonbury for me. And given that it costs so much these days (£160+, it's rumoured), I like to see someone that you might have to pay £40 or so to see normally.

I was very unsure about glasto this year, but fortunatly events overtook me and I was unable to go due to a stag do. My friends that did go loved it this year, so I will be up for getting this early bird stuff. :)

So, where's everyone gonna be camping then?

A, erm, "certain" side of C*****ll. If I can get there early enough. Which at this rate, is going to mean next week.

I fucking love the excitement, but if this carries on - this early - then, well before next year, I think I'll actually burst before Christmas.

So, no fallow year yet then? Presumably that'll be 2010?

Yes, Eavis confirmed this at the post-festival press debriefing. last line at - http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/news.aspx?id=3207

Last line in question :

ME on official Glastonbury website said:
Eavis has also confirmed that the Festival will take a break in two years time to allow for some rest.

It's VERY questionable IMO to assume from that rather loosely worded throwaway quote** (and old Michael is prone to those!!) that the next fallow year will be 2010.

ETA next day : **Not that it's an actual quote anyway ....

Usual pattern for years has been four years on, 1 year off -- that means that from the last fallow year (2006) you have 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, then fallow in 2011.

Also, the existing licence covers up to and including 2010, as do many of the contracts currently in place eg Carlsberg.

Informed chat elsewhere places 2011 as the next year off, despite the above ....

Yep, absolutely no reason at the moment to assume anything other than the usual pattern.

Mentally, for me, it feels like "there's only two more", although in reality, after this year's critical success and - I reckon - back on track for a sell out 2009, then hey, here's to another four festivals from 2012.

(And beyond. In 15 or 20 years I want to be an eccentric old codger in the green fields. Still clinging on. :) )

Did this last one actually sell out in the end, then?

Or were there still tickets for sale at HMV right up to it opening?

Ta. I did wonder. You couldn't get a ticket on the gate, then?

No, you had to buy them from See or HMV then collect them.

Many of the stewards/security we spoke to blamed the HMV thing for all the thefts on the wednesday and thursday but I'm not sure how true that it.

Sounds likely to me. It seems that the worse years for crime are the ones when people can get tickets late / get over the fence / whatever.

I'm hoping this new ticketing thing should deter the thieves a bit.

From the email, thought it was worth sticking it up here -

We're back, with some exciting news about Glastonbury 2009, which will take place from June 24th-28th (we hope you can join us for the full five days of fun).

ADVANCE BOOKING SCHEME ANNOUNCED

Following this year's triumphant Festival, Michael Eavis has revealed that tickets for next year's Glastonbury will go on sale on October 5th. In another first, people will have the option to either buy their ticket outright, or reserve it by paying a £50 deposit.

Says Michael Eavis: We have come up with a scheme that will allow people a much longer period to plan and pay for their tickets, while still continuing the battle against ticket touting. By paying as little as £50 up front this year, our registered customers from all over the world will be able to guarantee a ticket for next year's event. At the same time, the very successful registration scheme will ensure that tickets will only go to those named individuals who have reserved them in advance.

Many festival goers have already registered their names for the 2009 event and will already have their all-important registration number. Meanwhile, anyone who hasn't registered will be able to do so from September 1st 2008.

Look out for full ticketing details for the 2009 Festival (including ticket prices) in the next few weeks, both in your inbox and at glastonburyfestivals.co.uk

I'll be getting one in advance. Not sure about taking the eldest this year though, she will have to pay for a ticket and will only be able to go for 1 1/2 days:(
But we loved it this year, wouldnt have missed it for the world despite Jay-z and the hype

I'm really pissed off about this because we're well skint at the moment and will be for the next few months because of weddings, birthdays, MOTs etc. I haven't got a hundred fucking quid to put a fucking deposit down for 2 of us. FFS.

Yea same here!! I was going to use my Christmas bonus to pay for the tickets but as they have now changed it, there is no way I am going to be able to do this. Am actually properly gutted!!

Nope, nada, not. Had a great time this year, and after 2007 it restored my faith from 2005 that without rain(which aside from 1 night 2005 was) it's a decent festie, but the price increase, going back to a 'traditional' lineup and just the need to do something different next year.

We were thinking Love Parade in May and then Sonar over the summer. I'd also like to try Lattitude but wry's not so keen.

But I really, really wanted to go! It was my first time going this year because of me raising babies and stuff I missed out all the previous years. Now I can finally get to go, I cant because they have changed the bloody system and are asking for payment as early on as October, ffs I have 3 kids birthdays to pay for AND save for Christmas as well!! Cant see how I am going to be able to go now :(

Thanks a bunch Eavis and Butthead!!

I don't think ALL of the tickets will be up for advance sale. They'll probably release another batch in Spring for those who missed the first boat...

I know I'll be getting mine in Oct though.

£10 a week in a pot now, maybe a bit to top up when they go on sale... Job done. I'd rather be skint now than miss out tbh.
