Glastonbury 2008

Hurrah! For everyone having a lovely time, bar the wee wee and poop incidents.

And I'm hearting the idea of Tanky as welfare! She'd be sure to patch broken branes back together a treat!

Nah i dont post there. Not sure i could realyl contribute to be honest either i dont really get the concept behind shangrila so doubt i would be helpful.

It was just really barron and far to similer to lost vagness but with all the good bits now in trash city.

dave

it was lost vagueness mark 2. I really thought they would do something fab, something completely new.

As we walked up the railway tracks the loo smell was still the first to greet you, then the old urban camping field had been taken over as an oh so appealing but totally out of bounds to the people who'd paid their money crew only area. You had to pay 50p to look in the insect circus, it was achingly trendy and frankly exactly the same as last year.

I didnt bother going back at night.

I can understand the need for crew only bars/bogs etc - having a spot to chill out/refresh yourself when you've been working your arse off for days is fair enough, but having entertainment going on in them gets on my nerves.

I dunno though, can't really be arsed with backstage camping much even when I'm working. Would rather be with the punters and I don't mind about needing space to chill.

no :p an aussie lass, I gave her tanky's and jtg's numbers

No, never had anything from her

I dont kn ow if yo0u post on E festials at all butthe organiser of Shangri- la has posted on there asking for feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Wasn't the organiser as such, but a WBC person wanting feedback on the bars. Still good to see though. I think area organisers should be doing that kind of thing.

It was my first time having access to crew camping, but we wanted to stay with our mates. We did move up to the farm on Sunday because I was working pretty much all day Monday and couldn't leave our gear for the scavengers. It was lovely up there, but quite disconnected from the festival. Very nice to have for Monday night though... somewhere where you know you can go back and you'll have all your stuff safe, loos, showers that kind of thing.

On Tuesday I made a cardboard sign saying "Red Gate - Dodgy Knee/Lazy!" and got picked up by the third vehicle. I had 30kgs to haul and was very drained. William helped me carry it in, the bloody star, but I was on my own again now, so being in a crew area made getting a favour like that quite easy.

I'll probably do something similar next year... public for the main bit, then bail up the hill for the last night, assuming I'll be working Monday again.

I was thinking more about the techie/rigging crews on the stages and suchlike - the guys who have to be in one spot for pretty much the whole weekend. Giving them their own bar seems fair enough :)

Yeah, the stage crews actually need to be camped backstage of where they're working. The traders need to be camped near where they work. That's it though, the size of the other backstage areas is ridiculous.

Stupidly idiotic things you did at Glastonbury (the first of a popular series?)

I'll start :

On the last Monday, on our way out, I left the camping mattress on the bonnet of the car parked immediately behind Deb's. Had been intending to put it into her boot (door of which was 1 yard away from where I 'rested' the mattress) then got 'distracted' ...

Just discovered this yesterday, I've now got to buy a new one this afternoon, otherwise, pained backs over the next 3 days

What idiotic thing did you do at Glastonbury?

Sat out in the sun too long on monday with a freshly shaved head, only to have it burn so bad it spent an entire night leaking down my face...

I left my wallet, cash and card at my friends in Bristol before I even got there! Luckily my gf had her some cash and her card with her... so I didn't spend a penny :D

We left our car unlocked in the car park all weekend too... which wasn't probably the wisest thing to do, but we got away with it :)

eeek I did similar on the weds, it didnt feel hot, in fact I kept putting on my jacket then taking it off... I still wound up with sunburn and now I'm peeling!

Had an absolutely brilliant Glastonbury, second time i've been (last in 2005) and was working with Oxfam. Work was really fun and interesting, and was surprised by how friendly the security were as we were stationed with many of them on our gate. Highlight was either the Infadels in one of the dance tents (forget which one) or watching the sunrise at stone circle on thursday morning. Will definitely be back next year. :)

Yep, a fantastic time.I just cried remembering just how happy the crowd was at Eddy Grant, the big seratonin-depleted wreck of a man that I am at the moment.

Expected a mildly diverting half-hour cheesefest from my Guyanese counterpart, but instead came away entirely uplifted by an unashamedly feelgood set and smiling crowd. That and Beardyman's first set were the unexpected highlights of Glasto 08 for me. I've rarely seen so many gaping jaws and looks of amazement in a crowd - not just the range of sounds, but the speed of sampling and showmanship.

Only vague disappointments? Couldn't get into the headline sets really, particularly Manu Chao on the Jazz World. Loved em last time I saw them, but at night and in repeat it just got too predictable and one-paced. Walked away to see Massive Attack... who also bored us shitless. Watched Jay Z the night before and he did a fine job of judging the crowd, although he wasn't my cup of tea.

And CassetteBoy was juvenile shit to be honest. A largely witless collection of predictable samples roughly spliced together, novelty costumes with tired rhyming skills, and a couple of monkey-suited goons doing interpretative dancing/pretending to shag each other to the track. Felt like the grumpy old man at a party, but MOTD samples and Harry Potter porn-lite samples didn't float my boat if I'm honest. I clearly needed even more happy drugs to consume...
