Genocide Olympics 2022

Is this still going to happen? It didn't look like any countries were willing to fully boycott Beijing, but omicron seems like it could be a Games-changer....

Beijing might be getting a little worried if they're pressuring US business leaders to push back against boycotts.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng on Tuesday told a video conference of U.S. business executives to “make a positive contribution” to the Games, which open in February.

“Boycotting the Olympics for political reasons harms the interests of athletes, violates the shared ideals and aspirations of the international society, and is unpopular,” Xie said.

Do not speak out of turn or you will be taken out and shot!

Meanwhile, up on the China thread
There is also the small issue of the winter Olympics

Olympic preparations continue with the traditional silencing of activists.

This is the most hollow, weirdest olympics opening ceremony in history surely. Even the BBC did a full ten minutes in their intro on the 'controversies' around all this. I feel sorry for the athletes.

Even the snow on the mountains is fake apparently. Crass.

Well done Team GB skiier Gus Kenworthy, most athletes have been understandably reluctant to speak out.

Kenworthy said the IOC "should not grant" the Games to countries with "appalling" human rights records.

"I think the IOC should take a stance against a lot of these atrocities and stand up for important issues, and by not granting those countries the right to host the Games they could create positive change in those places - maybe not even letting them compete," the 30-year-old told BBC Sport's Laura Scott.

Bizarre opening ceremony with people endlessly jumping up and down and waving enthusiastically

This was quite a nice moment. This young lass absolutely nails some kind of unprecedented BOOM MASSIVE thing to win gold, and all her fellow competitors (including the one who was in gold position) jump on her to congratulate her.

I’d wondered where this was going on when watching earlier. I just figured China had some snowy mountains and if necessary were playing fast and loose with the definition of ‘Beijing’.
Sichuan province has some potential areas.
Xinjiang or Tibet have some suitable terrain too but obviously would be… interesting choices.

Quite an achievement, but not environmentally great.
I also wonder where all this water came from.

The reports I heard on the news mentions athletes complaining about unnecessary isolation, poor isolation conditions, too cold, cold food.............

This surprises me a bit. Not so much about the unnecessary isolation because people will be coming from places with a lot of different covid regimes, but I would have expected the CCP propaganda machine to be really hot on ensuring conditions were good during their time in the international spotlight.

theres some quality goofy hatstands to switch 720 monkeywrenches going on here in the ladies snowboarding. i love these commentators.

Russian figure skater tests positive for performance enhancing drugs - still competes because she's a wee girl.

Amazing levels of corruption. The future does not bode well with the CCP in China and Putin's ex-KGB cronies in the Kremlin - must have done some kind of deal here.

I'm quite pleased to have not seen any of this Olympics, save for a few seconds on the news. Though tbf I always find the Winter Olympics dull at the best of times.

What do the IOC do next after she was allowed to continue to compete?

Do we think the Russians bribed the sport of arbitration, or do we go by the line of a mix up with medicines?

The court of arbitration for sport have only allowed her to compete pending the final outcome of an appeal.

It's likely she'll win the competition before losing the gold medal with a retrospective ban once they test her B sample or her excuse is dismissed.

Bribery may be part of the picture but my sense is that these top governance organisations - CAS, Olympics etc - have to some extent been captured by the interests that they are supposed to regulate/administer. Which is much worse.

There's a bit of nominative determinism in the UK bobsleigh team, where one of them is called Greg Cackett.

So is team GB staging a sophisticated protest against China’s human rights record by refusing to win any medals, or are we just shite?

In all this discussion about the doped Russian teenage skater, has anyone asked Brian Boitano for his take on what should be done?
