That by election was hideous in what it said about 'old Labour', the Liberals and the media. But as touched on in the clip, Tatchell was dammed before it started with Foot's (political) opposition to him. It was almost as bad as Starmer withdrawing his support for the Rochdale candidate which let the equally hideous Galloway in.

It was interesting watching the 97 election again the other night. Ben Bradshaw was due to be the first openly gay MP elected (tho in the event, Twigg beat him to it) and his calling out the vicious homophobia he faced from the Tories and the Libdems. For all their progressive bullshit they aways had a lot of nasty bigots in the membership.

My, my, what a tactical genius Starmer is! I'd have liked Labour to have a principled, pro-Palestinian stance, but in the absence of that it would have been so easy to pursue a line that avoided this, the Rochdale result and all the problems that will now arise in areas with a high Muslim vote.

TBH, his focus has been on Asian/Muslim voters for a long time, particularly in the seats he has won. Goes back to his early Stop the War Coalition and Respect days.
