Mercedes finally drop ‘zeropod’ concept with revised W14 F1 car at Monaco GP

Mercedes have dropped their controversial ‘zeropod’ concept as part of a major upgrade package at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. The long-awaited updates, originally scheduled for the cancelled Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, include new bodywork, a new floor and front suspension in a bid to improve the competitiveness of their underperforming 2023 challenger. Mercedes’ revised W14 now features a more conventional sidepod design which draws similarities to the one adopted by Aston Martin, who have emerged as Red Bull’s nearest challengers in 2023. It is the result of Mercedes’ decision to change their unique design philosophy which was first introduced at the start of F1’s new era of regulations in 2022. But after a difficult 2022 season which featured just a single victory, and having started the new campaign well off the pace, Mercedes conceded they needed to change concepts to get back to the front of the grid.

The upgrades were seen publicly for the first time in the Monaco pitlane on Thursday, ahead of this weekend’s grand prix. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has warned that the upgrades will not be a “silver bullet”. "We need to be careful not to draw too many conclusions from this one event," Wolff said. "We are introducing the first step in a new development direction. It won't be a silver bullet; from my experience, they do not exist in our sport. We hope that it gives the drivers a more stable and predictable platform. Then we can build on that in the weeks and months ahead.

‘Problem’ with Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari move identified by Bernie Ecclestone

Bernie Ecclestone has weighed in on the rumours linking Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, saying it won’t happen, after all if Charles Leclerc is so “happy” to jump ship then there has to be a big problem over at Maranello. Yet to commit his future to Mercedes despite Toto Wolff saying that a contract for 2024 would be in place before the winter was over, there have been suggestions Hamilton is waiting to see whether Mercedes’ upgraded W14 begins to solve some of their problems. And if not, well then a move to a rival team or even retirement could be on the cards. Ecclestone, however, doesn’t see either of those happening as he believes Hamilton will want to push on with Mercedes as he chases that record-breaking eighth World title. As for the Ferrari part of the rumours that suggests he could make a straight swap with Leclerc, the 92-year-old questions why Hamilton would want to join a team that’s lead driver is all too happy to get out.

He told Press Association: “I would be surprised that Ferrari would want to get rid of Leclerc to sign Lewis because they are very much in love with Leclerc. Lewis has said that when he does decide to stop he would still want to be connected with Mercedes so it would surprise me if he wanted to leave. And if I was Lewis and I saw that Leclerc is happy to leave Ferrari, I would think there has to be a problem there. I also don’t know why Lewis would think he would be better off at Ferrari than where he is at the moment. He knows everything well and truly at Mercedes. They know him, and they have a lot of respect for him so he couldn’t be better looked after anywhere.”

According to Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, what Hamilton really wants is a pay rise. The 80-year-old recently told F1-Insider that there are two things that annoy Hamilton, one being that he is “no longer World Champion and will have a hard time becoming one again in the future” with neither Mercedes nor Ferrari showing signs of being able to challenge Red Bull. The other thing, says Marko, is that Max Verstappen’s salary is reportedly $20 million higher than Hamilton’s with Mercedes. "Lewis is anything but happy about the fact that he is no longer the best-earning driver in Formula 1,” Marko claimed. “That is now Max Verstappen. At least he could change that with Ferrari’s help.” But while the speculation continues, Hamilton has made it clear he wants to continue in Formula 1 and do so with Mercedes. “I thought about and watched the Ferrari drivers on the screens at the track and of course you wonder what it would be like to be in red,” he recently told ESPN. “But then I go to my team, to Mercedes, and this is my home. I’m happy where I am. I haven’t signed a contract yet, but we are working on one.”

Anyone know a good VPN provider? I’m in France wanting to watch Sunday on my NOW TV account.
Paid or free? A free one is likely to be very slow.
PIA is one of the fastest and it has a 30 day money back so maybe sign up for that and next week cancel it

Having now seen the new Merc up close it really is a bits and pieces car. I guess they were limited in what they could do without building a brand new car. The floor will be what gives it the most extra speed is my guess but we haven't seen that up close yet.

I think this is just Mercedes seeing what will work and what still needs looking at, this will be a testing bed for the 24 car.

Happy to pay. That sounds great, thanks will take a look.
Some VPNs have massive discount as much as 83% off so it is well worth looking to see what discounts are out there. there are some free apps that show what discounts are available so once you've found the VPN you like use one of them for a discount

That’s brilliant mate. Thank you. Will have a look later properly but surf shark do a month for a tenner so that probably fits the bill perfectly.

FIA report reveals all the secrets of the revised Mercedes W14

The FIA have revealed the full list of upgrades that the teams have brought to this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, but let’s be honest, it’s only the Mercedes everyone wants to know about. After their early season struggles, a carry-over from last year but without the porpoising, Mercedes made the call to heavily revise the W14. They even dropped the zero-pods to go down a more Aston Martin route with the bulge – but without the radical Red Bull undercut. The new sidepods have gone hand-in-hand with a new cooling layout, front suspension and floor while eagle-eyed fans have noticed that even the wing mirror as a change in camber to extend past the intake.

According to the FIA report, Mercedes have a new “front suspension, front fences, sidepod inlet, engine cover, rear wing and rear corner”. As per the FIA explanation when it came to the revised sidepods, the description read that it is “to improve flow to the floor edge, which results in more floor load and also proved flow to the rear corner.” But from Toto Wolff to Lewis Hamilton to George Russell, everyone at Mercedes is downplaying the possible gains saying the updates will “not necessarily guarantee lap time, but it’s definitely going to bring performance.” Mercedes are alone in their sheer number of upgrades as while early reports claimed Ferrari would also introduce a big upgrade at Imola, one that would run in Monaco, they pushed that back to the Spanish Grand Prix.

Instead, team boss Fred Vasseur has revealed they only have “a few small changes” for this weekend – a new rear corner and rear wing. “This weekend we want to be much more focused on set-up and handling,” said the Frenchman. “We will only have a few small changes in the car that were already planned for Imola, but the most substantial part will be in Barcelona next week. “Here in Monaco the imperative is to take advantage of all the free practice sessions by working only on setting up the single-seater, we know that everyone will be focused on qualifying, it’s no mystery.”

Red Bull have also made a few tweaks with a new rear wing and front suspension , the latter of which has seen the trailing edges of the wishbone shrouds altered to lock the angles required at the Monaco circuit. Alpine have also brought several changes including the front suspension and sidepod inlet while McLaren have a new floor and rear wing. Alfa Romeo have gone all out with a revised engine cover, floor belly, rear suspension and rear wing while Aston Martin have a new front and rear suspension.

The latter, reads the FIA report, has been change predominantly to suit the modified rear break duct and the flow-field that creates. Haas, meanwhile, have a new front wing. After the regulations were tweaked this season to allow for the supports in the wings to be more aerodynamic, Haas have now introduced their version with five supports between the top and second flap on the wing.

Christian Horner says Red Bull would not have set up engine division if team knew Honda would remain in Formula 1

Red Bull chief Christian Horner says the team would "absolutely not" have set up their own engine division if they had known Honda were going to return to Formula 1. The Japanese manufacturer announced earlier this week that it will make a full-time return to the sport to supply Aston Martin, Red Bull's nearest challengers at the top of this season's constructors' standings, with engines when new regulations are introduced in 2026.

Honda announced in October 2020 that it would withdraw from F1, and being Red Bull's official engine partner at the end of the 2021 season, but then agreed to continue to supply engines as a paid contractor from 2022 to 2025. As a result of Honda's decision to exit F1, Red Bull Powertrains was set up to enable the team to build its own engines for 2026, while a partnership to work alongside Ford on the project was announced in February. "Would we have made a same decision knowing what Honda's decision is today? Absolutely not," Horner said after first practice at the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday. "But we've made it, and we're committed to it, the more we've got involved the more benefit we see to the group long term."

Despite his admission, Horner says that he now feels "grateful" towards Honda for pushing Red Bull to create its own engine division. Red Bull ended Mercedes' streak of eight successive constructors' titles last season, and are on course to retain their title having taken dominant victories in each of the first five races of the 2023 campaign. "For the long term, the prospects of Red Bull, we've outgrown being a customer," Horner said. "For us to have the power unit on sight, with the chassis, the synergises that creates, with engine and chassis engineers sitting next to each other, the advantages are significant. We would have not made that jump if it had not been for Honda's withdrawal. We should be grateful to Honda for giving us that push to create our own engine facility, the jobs it's created, and then the partnership that we have with Ford that's particularly exciting for the future."

Horner's comments came after his lead driver, Max Verstappen, said on Thursday that seeing Honda partner with Aston Martin was "a bit of a shame". Verstappen, who is seeking a third successive drivers' title, admitted the link-up was "great" for Aston Martin, who have been the surprise package of the season, jumping from the back of the midfield last year to claiming four podiums in the first five races of 2023 through Fernando Alonso. "I think from our side it's a bit unfortunate how that turned out because a few years ago they said they were going to stop so Red Bull set up their own engine division," Verstappen said. "Then at one point they [Honda] said they want to continue. When you are in the process of building a whole engine yourself, you can't really work together anymore. It's a bit of a shame because we always had, and have, a really good relationship with them and seeing them go to Aston Martin is a bit of a shame. But we are also very excited from our side from 2026 onwards, what's going to happen together with Ford. For Aston Martin it's really good, they have a great engine, we all know that."

Despite Red Bull's clear frustration, Horner remains confident that his team will be able to maintain a strong relationship with Honda as they continue to work together until the end of 2025. "We've enjoyed and will continue to enjoy a great relationship and supply with them," he said. They announced their withdrawal in 2020, and that forced us to make a decision, long term wise what strategically was the best route forward for us, we created Red Bull powertrains, they agreed to become a technical supplier for us. We've enjoyed a great working relationship but of course now we're off on our own journey as an engine manufacturer, with our partnership with ford, and that's exciting for us for the future.

McLaren targets Silverstone for 'B-spec' car

Andrea Stella admits that McLaren is aiming to have its B-spec car ready in time for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in just over a month. With the Woking team admitting as early as the launch the MCL60 wasn't the car it intended, the team got to work on what is basically a B-spec car, a concept not witnessed for some time, and made even more difficult by the budget cap.

Speaking in Monaco, Stella admits that the team is targeting Silverstone for the car's much-anticipated debut. "We are working on delivering the main round of upgrades between Austria and Silverstone," he told Speedcafe. "It will be a very noticeably different car. We hope to do another round post (summer) shutdown," he added.

Aside from the B-spec car, the team has continued introducing upgrades to the original, the first of which were available in Baku with another raft unveiled this weekend in Monaco, however these were mainly circuit specific. The B-spec car is one of many upgrades the Woking outfit is making behind the scenes, with a restructuring of its technical department and improvements to its facility including a new windtunnel.
