Mercedes and Red Bull’s raft of F1 upgrades for the Azerbaijan GP

Mercedes and Red Bull are among the teams to have introduced several upgrades at this weekend’s F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In a bid to close the gap to early pace-setters Red Bull, Mercedes have brought a new rear-wing endplate, front corner, rear corner and rear suspension to Baku. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff previously teased that the Silver Arrows would be bringing “consistent” updates over the coming races in their quest to add performance to their troubled W14 car. Despite winning the opening three races of the season, Red Bull are not standing still and have introduced a raft of updates, including a revised floor edge and floor fences. As expected, Ferrari have brought the fewest upgrades to Baku out of the top teams - just a new rear wing. McLaren have their first substantial upgrade package of the season, while Alpine have introduced a new floor and suspension elements.

Red Bull
Sidepod Inlet - Revised aspect ratio inlet compared to previous version, wider span and reduced in height. Engine Cover - A consequential change for the sidepod inlet geometry, no requirement to change to the Louvre exit panels.
Floor Edge - Minor revisions to the edge and wing geometries to realise latest intent
Floor Fences - The outer fence has a revised top edge profile.
Rear Corner - A single winglet on the outboard face of the wrap-around has split into two elements

Ferrari
Rear Wing - Lower Downforce Top Rear Wing design

Mercedes
Rear Wing Endplate - Subtle changes to wing tip and endplate surfaces with infill options to shed drag.
Front Corner - Increase duct exit area.
Rear Corner - Lower deflector endplate trim.
Rear Suspension - Lower wishbone outboard fairing reprofiled.

Alpine
Floor Body - Completely new floor with multiple detail changes since previous specification.
Front Suspension - Revised angle of incidence of the front top wishbone fairing.
Rear Suspension - Revised suspension leg fairings and rear brake drum flick.
Rear Wing - Revised top rear wing mainplane.
Front Wing - Trim to the front wing flap.

McLaren
Floor Body - New Floor geometry
Rear Wing - Lower Drag Rear Wing Assembly
Rear Wing - Rear Wing Flap Trims
Beam Wing - New upper Beamwing Element
Beam Wing - New upper and lower Beamwing Element
Beam Wing - New upper and lower Beamwing Element

Alfa Romeo
Rear Wing - A new configuration of the rear wing with a shorter chord
Beam Wing - A new configuration of the beam wing, moving from a stacked configuration to a biplane one.
Front Wing - New front wing flap profiles

Aston Martin
Rear Wing - The new rear wing has smaller upper elements compared to those used so far this season. There are two versions of flap to suit this wing.

Haas
Rear Wing - The rear wing prepared for the Baku circuit characteristics will generate less aerodynamic drag respect the wings used so far in 2023.

AlphaTauri
Front Wing - The new front wing flap reduces element chords and incidence to reduce overall Front wing assembly downforce generated.
Engine Cover - The central bodywork exit has been altered to improve cooling performance.
Rear Wing - The new upper rear wing assembly reduces downforce generated by reducing the camber and incidence of the wing elements.
Beam Wing - The new biplane beam wing assembly reduces downforce and drag by reducing the chord and incidence of the second element.
Beam Wing - The new single element beam wing component generates less downforce and drag than the biplane assembly in the absence of the flap element.
Rear Corner - The new rear drake drum has an additional inlet inboard of the main drum fence to increase rear brake disc cooling. The drum vane cascade behind the inboard inlet has also been redesigned to increase the overall downforce generated by improving their relative positions on the drum face and increasing their number.

Williams
Beam Wing - We have a shorter chord RLW available for this event. This is the same basic geometry as the previous version but with a trim to the trailing edge
Nose - We have modified the shroud on the underside of the nosebox to alter the local curvature

Any truth to this
Is there any truth to Leclerc claiming he hasn't held talks with Mercedes, I guess it's true as he says he hasn't held talks with them.

Also Toto Wolff told Sky DE: “I haven't had a single conversation with Charles. Except at the airport where we discussed whether we should go to Starbucks or not, so zero. I don't know where the rumours come from. So [they are not true], not at all."

Sargeant out of the Sprint while Ocon set for two pit starts

The first Sprint of the year will see only eighteen cars on the grid this afternoon with Sargeant withdrawing and Ocon in the pits. After making it into his first Q2 session yesterday, Logan Sargeant was provisionally into SQ2, the second part of the Sprint Shootout, and improving on his lap time when he hit the wall bringing SQ1 to a slightly early end.

That did mean though that the American did get into the second part of qualifying on both attempts this weekend and was set to start both today’s Sprint and tomorrow’s Grand Prix from P15. However, a few hours after the Shootout, Williams requested that Sargeant’s car be withdrawn from the Sprint as there was too much damage for them to be able to get it all repaired in time.

Esteban Ocon meanwhile, who had qualified for P13 in the Sprint and P12 for the Grand Prix, has had his suspension setup changed while the car was under parc ferme conditions and so, as announced earlier this week alongside the updated layout for Sprint weekends, breaches of parc ferme will mean that drivers won’t be starting on the grid for either Saturday or Sunday’s races.

“The setup was modified whilst the car was in parc fermé with the approval of the Technical Delegate further to a written request,” the Stewards said. “The suspension setup has been changed from that previously used in Qualifying. The competitor is therefore required to start the Sprint and the Race from the pit lane per article 40.9 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

Alpine hasn’t had a great time in Baku this weekend with a hydraulic issue on Pierre Gasly’s car in practice leaving it in flames at the side of the track while Ocon had to miss the remainder of that session as his car needed to be checked to make sure it didn’t have the same issues. Gasly then hit the wall and had to stop on track in the first part of qualifying. While a suspected exhaust leak saw Gasly compromised in the Sprint Shootout and unable to progress out of SQ1.

The provisional grid for this afternoon now looks like this:
  1. Charles Leclerc Scuderia Ferrari
  2. Sergio Perez Red Bull Racing
  3. Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing
  4. George Russell Mercedes
  5. Carlos Sainz Scuderia Ferrari
  6. Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
  7. Alex Albon Williams Racing
  8. Fernando Alonso Aston Martin

  10. Lando Norris McLaren
  11. Oscar Piastri McLaren
  12. Nico Hulkenberg Haas
  13. Kevin Magnussen Haas
  14. Zhou Guanyu Alfa Romeo
  15. Valtteri Bottas Alfa Romeo
  16. Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri
  17. Pierre Gasly Alpine

hmm just waiting for the start before heading out as have family over from back home

how many red flag do we see in this sprint race

:D

Forgot to tune in for the start because I was looking at holiday cottages with the wife. Doesn't seem like I've missed all that much, apart from Norris having a bad afternoon.

Hulkenberg joins Ocon in Baku pit lane start

Nico Hulkenberg has been hit with a pit lane start for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Haas has been forced to make set-up changes to the suspension on Hulkenberg’s VF-23 under parc fermé conditions. It means the German driver, who had qualified 17th on the grid at the Baku Street Circuit, is now required to start from the pitlane alongside Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

Ocon’s Alpine incurred an exhaust leak during the sprint shootout, necessitating repairs that resulted in what was effectively a double penalty. Under the new rules for the sprint weekend, Ocon incurred a double pitlane start for both the sprint and grand prix. Hulkenberg’s infringement means team-mate Kevin Magnussen and Pierre Gasly in his Alpine each move up a place to 17th and 18th, forming what is now the back row.

Anthem watch:

A choir of Greek goddesses become multi-coloured gymnasts.

Like a sad Christmas carol with some nice modal harmonies. A musical mulled-wine.

Not exactly the match for an F1 thrash-fest of screaming engineering, but pleasant.

7/10

i hope something goes wrong for the fella and we get to see him storming around again in the press conference again
