British Grand Prix: Police investigate 'bloody' Silverstone fight

Northamptonshire Police have released a statement after two men were hospitaled by a fight that occurred at Silverstone on Friday. Eyewitness claimed to see 'blood and ear bites' during the scuffle, which resulted in four arrests. The statement reads: "Police officers are appealing for information following a fight at the Silverstone circuit which resulted in two men being taken to hospital. The incident happened yesterday evening [July 1] between 5.45pm and 6pm near the Ferris Wheel when there was an altercation between a number of men with two of them being taken to hospital as a result. Four men, aged 40, 35, 35, and 30, have been arrested in connection with this incident. The area was very busy at the time of the incident and officers are appealing for anyone who may have any mobile phone footage of what happened or anyone who witnessed what took place, to please make contact with them, either by approaching one of our officers at the circuit or by calling 101."

According to eyewitnesses at the scene claimed to see blood and ear bites amongst the melee, which occurred shortly after the day's second F1 practice session. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz posted the fastest time in that session, trailed by the British duo of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. Drivers were greeted by markedly more treacherous conditions on Saturday for the final practice session and qualifying, with heavy rain making life difficult. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel struggled to capitalise, going out in Q1 along with his Aston Martin team-mate, Lance Stroll, who finished rock bottom of the pack.

[Fucking idots]

Not great again for Danny Ric out in 14th place. I really like Danny and feel very sorry for him that this car doesn't appear to work for him
Hope we get to see some of his story on Drive To Survive next year, it's been a massive step backwards, be interesting to see how he has dealt with it.

Really pleased for Sainz. I’d far prefer to see him leading the Ferrari title challenge, so let’s hope he converts pole to a win.

Why do you think so many of his fellow red bull juniors exclaimed “Juri!” on the twitch stream as soon as he said it? They didn’t want anything to be unclear to Dr Marko when they replayed the recording down the phone to him, five mins later 😆

Hamilton delivers message to fans as he says he understands why they’re booing Verstappen

Sir Lewis Hamilton has urged the British fans not to boo rival drivers after the frosty reception Max Verstappen has received all weekend. Verstappen and Hamilton did battle throughout 2021, and came together at last year’s British Grand Prix in an accident that saw the Dutchman crash out on the opening lap. The fight culminated in controversial fashion at the end of the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, and the relationship between Hamilton and Verstappen ultras has been far from placid since, leading the British faithful to serenade the 24-year-old with boos.

After qualifying second in Silverstone, Verstappen revealed that he struggled to hear what Billy Monger was saying when being interviewed by the British racer, and Hamilton affirmed that “we’re better than that. I would say we don’t need to do the booing,” he said. “We have such great fans, our sporting fans feel emotions up and down, but I definitely don’t agree with booing, I don’t think we need to do that. I think we should be here pushing everybody, it doesn’t make any difference when you boo someone, they’ve already made the mistake, or whatever it is. But I really do appreciate the support I have here, maybe some of them are still feeling the pain from last year, still.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff suggested that if someone does not have anything nice to say, it is best not to say anything at all. “I think we shouldn’t be seeing any booing in any sports, I think that’s unsportsmanlike,” added the Austrian. “It’s clear we love the support the drivers have here and the enthusiasm, that’s fantastic. But if you are not into the other guys I think it’s best to remain silent, I think that’s the best way. The booing, I think none of the drivers deserve booing, no matter what happened last year.”

Verstappen was beaten to pole by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who claimed his maiden pole position in Formula 1. Charles Leclerc followed in the other Ferrari, with Sergio Perez in fourth ahead of Hamilton. The seven-time champion’s team-mate George Russell did not enjoy the greatest 12 minutes of his career in Q3 as he ended up eighth behind Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso. Zhou Guanyu and Nicholas Latifi, who made Q3 for the first time in his career, round out the top 10 ahead of Sunday’s race.

Nelson Piquet is accused of committing a racial crime

A number of politicos in Brazil have accused Nelson Piquet of committing a racial crime, asking a court to probe him over his N-word slur against Lewis Hamilton ahead of today’s British Grand Prix. The politicians say they want the former F1 world champion charged over his controversial comments. Aurea Carolina, Taliria Petrone and Vivi Reis, MPs for the left-wing Socialism and Liberty Party, have lodged a formal complaint with prosecutors in the capital Brasilia.

Petrone, a former teacher who has spent her political career representing Rio de Janeiro, said: 'Racism, which structures our society, needs to be fought everywhere.' The MPs added in their complaint: 'Treating black human beings in a clearly pejorative way, as Mr Nelson Piquet does, goes against practices for implementing equality.' Specialist lawyer Renan Gandolfi told local press Piquet could now face a criminal probe for using racial slurs and a prison sentence of up to three years plus a fine if convicted. Prosecutors in Brasilia have yet to comment and it was not immediately clear on Sunday if the complaint would be acted upon and a court investigation leading to possible charges launched.

Strategy guide for the British Grand Prix

Although teams usually tend to favour the one-stop strategy, Formula One’s tyre supplier Pirelli thinks that a two-stop strategy will be the fastest way to approach today’s British Grand Prix. With Silverstone placing the highest energy demands on tyres all year, Pirelli has nominated the hardest tyres in the range for this weekend: C1 as the P Zero White hard, C2 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and C3 as the P Zero Red soft. This is the third time that this combination has been nominated all year.

Yesterday’s qualifying session saw Carlos Sainz take his very first pole position after a qualifying session run in rainy conditions from start to finish. Because of the wet conditions, the intermediate tyres proved to be the best tyre in the qualifying session with every driver opting for this rubber throughout the entire session. With clouds hanging over the Silverstone circuit, the weather conditions remain unclear for today’s British Grand Prix. However, should the race take place in dry conditions, the quickest strategy is going to be a two-stopper, with a few different options on the table.

The P Zero Yellow medium is the tyre to start on, and the quickest strategy on paper is medium followed by P Zero White hard followed by medium. This has the advantage of ensuring that two different compounds are run earlier in the race, opening up strategic possibilities For those who don’t have a second set of mediums available, the strategy could be medium-hard-soft, which is also closely-matched – and could be converted to a one-stopper if needed. The Milan-based manufacturer estimates that a one-stopper is possible but hard to manage: this would be medium to hard.

Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Mario Isola commented: “Even though the intermediate tyre was not designed to cope with aquaplaning situations, it coped very well with the conditions today, allowing the drivers to reach nearly 300kph in wet conditions with comparatively long stints as the surface dried out. This is a track that puts lots of energy through the tyres, allowing a dry line to emerge. In the dry conditions of FP3, most drivers ran the soft tyre, and we expect the medium to be the main race tyre tomorrow if conditions are dry – which is not entirely certain – with a two-stopper being the best strategy,” Isola concluded.
