F1 2018

Does any other GP have a member of the armed forces stand on the podium? I don't remember seeing that before.

During the race it looked like Ferrari made a big mistake not pitting under the VSC but now with hindsight it seems that Mercedes lost 2nd place leaving Lewis out for 6 or 7 laps to many before his 2nd stop

Yes, he was losing time lap by lap for a fair while.

His tyres were in such a state he couldn't have stayed out. So why not change them as soon as you can?

Again, the Mercedes game management looks a bit amateur.

OK we're out of here after Ted's notebook, catch you guys next weekend in Mexico. Another race at a good time for us :)
Mexico being at high altitude always makes for an interesting race and Red Bull seem confident for that race

Lewis had about 17 seconds on Kimi, plus another 6 on Max - had Merc brought him in then he'd have split the two, fresh tyres and 20+ laps to make a single pass. I can understand Plan A being to stay out if their data said he'd be able to last the race on that first set of soft tyres, but when he lost 2 secs in 2 laps it was obvious a Plan B was needed - would still have stayed ahead of Max, just.

Waiting another 8 laps or so was rank amateur from Merc, they deserved to chuck that away. Well done Kimi, popular win that

Esteban Ocon and Kevin Magnussen disqualifiedhttps://www.crash.net/f1/racer/855/esteban-ocon
Both Ocon and Magnussen were disqualified from the United States Grand Prix over fuel issues. The Force India driver finished eighth on the road at the Circuit of the Americas but was excluded from the results after being found to have exceeded the legal fuel flow limit on the opening lap of Sunday’s race. The FIA notice read “The Stewards reviewed the telemetry evidence, heard from the driver of car 31 (Esteban Ocon) and team representatives, the Stewards find that the fuel mass flow exceeded 100 kg/hr during Lap 1 of the race”. Ocon took to social media following the race to vent his frustrations, saying on tweeter “Pushing the whole race, getting good points, and getting disqualified in the end for a stupid reason is probably the worst feeling ever”.

Magnussen disqualification was for consuming more than 105kg of fuel during the race. He also went on social media claiming F1 is now "Formula Fuelsaving", his full tweet read "Unfortunately today we were racing in Formula Fuelsaving rather than Formula 1. And we used 0.1kg (!) too much for the whole race so we got disqualified. Those are the rules so we just have to manage better. Car was great though and the pit stop was amazing. On to the next one!".

The post-race result changes promoted Sergio Perez up to eighth and Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley up to ninth marking his best result of the season while Marcus Ericsson also benefited to take the final point for Sauber.

Mexico GP and daylight saving in the UK
I believe in both Mexico and the UK clocks will change next weekend, as both countries are changing I don't think it will effect UK times for the race, but it will for me so I need to be careful, I think it means the time difference between the UK and here becomes 3 hours instead of 4, even though it happens every year I can never remember :confused:

Arriba, arriba! Andale, andale!

Rich Energy, remember them?
Rich Energy, the energy drinks company behind a bid to buy Force India and who last week were guests of Williams at the USGP, well they have done a deal with Haas. It appears that while Claire Williams was schmoozing the boss William Storey around the paddock last weekend he was also talking to Haas and has done a multi-year deal to become their title sponsor. Being a title sponsor can cost as little as $10 million nowadays, so not really a massive price for worldwide advertising. It is expected that the team will change the livery of the cars to the black and gold of the drink, although it is not something that one sees a lot in shops (I haven't seen it for sale here and friends in the UK have told me they have never seen it, although they also said they have never looked for it ;) ). The obvious explanation for this is that drink is going to be using F1 as a means to launch the brand and that there are investors who are keen to cash in on the world's fixation with energy drinks.

When Rich Energy was bidding to buy Force India last summer, it was suggested that the brand, fronted by William Storey, was supported by British entrepreneurs David Gold and David Sullivan. I think they made their money in porn but nowadays own West Ham United. There is no obvious link between the parties, apart from the fact that Rich Energy is a sponsor of West Ham's ladies team. Having said that there must be money behind Storey if Haas has agreed a deal, as normally announcements would not be made without money changing hands.

I found this chart interesting
Spped-Trap-Mexico.jpg

Comparing grid positions to top speed shows it isn't how fast your car is that gets you to poll, also looking at Leclerc's times I think he will be at the front from the start of next season. As with Danny Ric against Vettel in a Red Bull, will Leclerc do as well and beat Vettel in his first season (its a big ask but I think he could do it) :hmm:
