Excellent documentary for petrol-heads and engineers.

It's clear McLaren knew they were facing disaster on day 1 of testing, if not before.

Could Red Bull switch to Honda power in 2019
We will only have to wait until summer to find out as teams have to announce any engine change by then. Dr Helmut Marko seems to think Honda have made a big step forward and could be as good as the Renault power-unit by mid-season. Speaking to the German press Marko is reported to have said "so far we're positively surprised by Honda, in terms of their dedication and enthusiasm. I think they have learned from the mistakes that certainly happened. So far, according to the test stands, the engine is reliable. I think it will be possible for the engine to catch up to Renault level by mid season and if that happens, Red Bull is likely to make the switch from Renault to Honda for 2019. The regulations have changed so that you have to announce what engine you want to compete with the following year by the summer. We will analyse thoroughly and then make a decision".

Bernie wins a gold medal
Former F1 supremo, Bernard Charles Ecclestone, just received a recognition from the British Automobile Racing Club. The 87 year old was awarded a prestigious BARC Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution to motorsport spanning countless decades. It looks like Bernie's reaction to the acknowledgment was a bit muted.

Alfa Romeo Sauber released its contender for the 2018 season
The new C37 from Sauber was designed by Jorg Zander, the designer of the Brawn 001. The 2018 car will feature the the current-spec Ferrari power-unit, so should be a massive step forward for the team.

Whooooooops! Danny Ric has a red face

After the launch of the new BR14 yesterday the team let Danny Ric take the car on the Silverstone track for a shakedown (it counts as a filming day, so used the old spec tyres). Although the accident was at low speed, the RB14 incurred damage to its nose, front wing, floor and suspension. The Milton Keynes based outfit will now need to work to ensure that the requisite spare parts are ready for when preseason testing gets underway at Barcelona next Monday. As usual with a brand-new car, the program was characterized by short runs with plenty of inspection and analysis time between, but the RB14 didn't supply any nasty surprises.

Ricciardo sounded encouraged by the clean running he did get with the car and reported no early problems with the controversial Halo device on top of it. He said "It's hard to tell from a couple of laps but the initial feeling in the car is good. I can already feel that the rear feels pretty settled, even in these poor conditions. Those are encouraging early signs. So far I can see fine with the Halo".

Sponsorship news
Ferrari have extended their sponsorship with Philip Morris International. By virtue of this agreement, Scuderia Ferrari and Philip Morris international continue a collaboration of nearly five decades.

It seems the rumor that McLaren has managed to sign Petrobras as a sponsor are true. Petrobras was a major sponsor of Williams but left the team when Felipe Massa said he was retiring (for the first time) at the end of 2016. It is an interesting move as there are no Brazilian drivers currently in Formula One and it looks likely that the Brazilian GP will end very soon unless a new promoter can be found. Another reason it is a surprise is that Petrobras are involved in one of the biggest political corruption scandals in Latin American history, called the lava jato scandal (car wash scandal) that appears to involve around 90% of Brazilian politicians.

I think the aero is less messy on the RB, the ARS is a bit more toy like and chunkier so uglier.

I'm trying not to look at the halo but in black it is definitely less offensive.

The new Renault RS 18
At the launch of the 2018 Renault F1 car, the team claims that it has more than 950 HP. With only 3 penalty free power-units for the season, reliability will be a big concern for the factory team as well as their customers.

Rich Energy leading a bid to buy Force India
British energy drinks company Rich Energy is in talks to acquire Formula One motor-racing team Force India. Rich Energy chief executive William Storey is fronting the consortium, with veteran financier Laurie Pinto advising the group, the group is believed to be offering around £200m. Force India finished fourth in the 2017 constructors’ championship, behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, but has been the subject of takeover speculation amid issues affecting its co-owner Vijay Mallya. In June, Mallya rejected talk of a sale of Force India amid reported interest from F1’s former chief executive, Bernie Ecclestone. Australian David Brabham, son of three-time F1 world champion Jack Brabham, was also said to be keen on purchasing the team, but Mallya insisted he had no plans to sell.

While this appears to be a big news story, I'm not sure it is all it appears. According to Companies House Rich Energy seems to be a start-up with 3 registered directors, William Storey from the UK a Computer Consultant, Zoran Terzic from Croatian a Keep Fit Instructor and Richard Fletcher also from the UK and a Public House Manager. It all depends on the consortium which is said to be behind the bid, and where the money will be coming from, I guess.

It may also be largely fictitious and designed to get someone else to pay a higher price for the team, because it doesn’t make a lot of sense to put these things into the public domain before a deal is done. However for a start-up drinks company with very little money showing in its published accounts, it is useful publicity.

Rich Energy sounds like a bunch of pals who got together after a few pints and decided to have some fun and score some free GP tickets. They must be spitting feathers that the Grid Girls have been outlawed.

:)

I first heard about it yesterday and that's when I look the company up, at first I thought I'd found the wrong company on my company's house search, but today I noticed that the 2 best selling papers in the UK had the story linking to them on Google.

I think it is a bullshit story but as it was covered by those papers I thought I'd mention it here, I didn't translate it as I don't believe it. For sure Force India is for sale but Vijay Mallya wants a lot more than £200m, which is why it hasn't sold yet. Toro Rosso has been for sale for more than 4 years now and they haven't found a buyer.

Is it me or it the Halo much higher on the Merc, or just the way it's been photographed? I notice the press pictures of it seem very far away and most what I've seen so far is video footage, just be to fucking awkward!

I think it is the image, here is a picture from a different angle where it appears to look lower. while the drivers appear to have good sight-lines looking forward, they tend to pick out breaking points and the like from their peripheral vision, it will be interesting to hear what drivers say about this in testing and the first couple of races.

Lewis looks to be set to sign a new contract with-in a couple of weeks, this one is said to be worth £120m just for driving the car. News reports have linked him to Ferrari, Red Bull and even a return to McLaren, but why would he leave Mercedes when their car has been the best for the last few years.

It this the new McLaren

I am getting sick of waiting
The sand bagging starts Monday so I think we will get some idea of how this season will pan-out. Can't really see anyone getting close to Lewis and have money on Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull top 3 in constructors, best of the rest could be interesting.

I think the test will be on Sky so they'll be links for people to watch it free on the 'net live streaming

Think Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull is a given. Likely in that order but will see eh...

Hoping McLaren (once my actual next door neighbours in Woking) can raise their game this season.

It looks a lot less "fussy" than many of the others, I'm looking forward to seeing how it preforms in a race
Oh, I agree.

I just think the colours and where they put them are precisely how a child would draw a racing car, picking their favourite crayons. Plus the lighting the photographer has chosen is a bit unsubtle. It looks airbrushed, without scale. It looks like a toy.

But with luck it will be a competitive car. It's about time Alonso got to flick V-signs at Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Urban is a "whitelisted" site, which I think means "trusted", but I still don't see tweets :(

Edit, its OK I can see tweets if I right click and open in new tab, that's good enough for me as I only really want to see tweets in this thread

First morning of first test review
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo clocked the quickest time on the opening morning of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as McLaren hit trouble, while Toro Rosso-Honda racked up mileage. Cool and cloudy conditions prevailed for much of the morning at the Spanish Grand Prix venue, with the four-hour session interrupted by two stoppages.

The first was caused after just half an hour by McLaren when Fernando Alonso spun into the gravel exiting the final corner, with his rear-right wheel having detached. McLaren later confirmed that a wheel nut issue was to blame, and while Alonso returned to action shortly before lunch, he finished the morning session with just 10 laps to his name.

Meanwhile, McLaren’s former engine partner, Honda, enjoyed a productive session with new ally Toro Rosso as Brendon Hartley completed over a race distance worth of laps. Only Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg amassed more laps than Hartley, 73 to his 72; the Renault driver briefly stood atop the timesheets, before being shuffled down to fourth by the time the chequered flag was waved for lunch.

Ricciardo’s pace-setting time came during the final five minutes of running as he edged in front of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, recording a lap of 1:20.179. Bottas finished 0.170s in arrears, the Mercedes driver and his Red Bull counterpart both on Mediums while Soft-clad Kimi Raikkonen was third, 0.327s behind Ricciardo. Hartley finished fifth for Toro Rosso, ahead of Williams’ Lance Stroll, Haas’ Romain Grosjean and the delayed Alonso.

Marcus Ericsson took ninth for Sauber, as Force India development driver Nikita Mazepin completed the order, giving the VJM11 its track debut during the opening moments of the session. Mazepin was the culprit of the second red flag when the VJM11 came to a halt facing backwards in the Turn 4 gravel.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Sergey Sirotkin (Williams) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Renault) will take over from their respective team-mates for the afternoon session.

Ted's Note Book returns!

Fans of TNB should try to catch his Day 1 Testing edition, and look out for his demonstration of the loading the new Halo thing has to support.

I don't want to spoil it, but it involves a component from Sunday's lunch.

:)

For those who like the tech stuff
Here are 3 videos from Marc Priestley who was the McLaren No.1 mechanic back in 2008 the year Lewis won his title world championship. Other videos can be found on Marc's youtube channel.
These video's look at the new cars as they go into testing, they may well look very different by the time of the first race.
