F1 2018

I feel sorry for Botty. He did a sterling team job keeping Hammy's back. Pity he only got P5.

Great race by Danny Ric. He really excels at carving through the field.

A good result for Gasly too.

Finally home and I don't want to ever drive again, it was a great trip but we did over 17500 kilometers and it took 5 days longer than we thought. That was our own fault as we stopped in places longer than we should have. Loads of stories bit not for this thread.
No doubt 1%er has found a good spot to enjoy the race

Oi!!!! I don't look that old and that picture has put you on my old lady's shit list :D We did find places to watch all the GPs, we were driving through the State of Bahia, a massive state where you can drive for hundreds of kilometers with just sugarcane on both sides of the road and no houses anywhere. My old lady was driving and stopped to asked some people who were parked on the side of the road chatting and asked them if they know anywhere we could stop and eat and watch the GP. One of the people said follow us, they took us to their house where we watched the race and they fed us and gave us loads of booze, so we ended up staying the night :) Countryside people in Brazil are just fantastic:thumbs:

Anyway news
Rumours of Ricciardo to Renault
This rumor started when Danny was seen with Renault at the Hungaroring but was dismissed by a number of F1 reporters. This appears to be a done deal and could open up the driver market, unless Red Bull just swap him with Carlos Sainz who is a Red Bull driver. This news will piss off Esteban Ocon who was expected to move to Renault, it isn't 100% that Sainz will move to Red Bull, there are rumors that he is moving to McLaren to replace Alonso. I don't think either of the Toro Rosso drivers are ready to move up to Red Bull but they do move people up quickly, they did with Vettel and Max, so maybe Gasly will get a chance. Toro Rosso will replace Sainz (if he does move) with a Japanese driver I think, as Honda would be pushing for that.

It is a surprise move and I don't remember reading anyone who writes about F1 predicting it, but it is a factory team move so makes sense for Danny, also I think he is pissed off as Red Bull see Max as the future.

Niki Lauda has emergency lung transplant
Triple Formula One world champion Niki Lauda will have to spend weeks in hospital after the Austrian received an emergency lung transplant, even though the operation went well, his surgeon Walter Klepetko said in Vienna. "Things are developing very well at the moment, and we are very satisfied," Klepetko told Austrian public broadcaster ORF.

Lauda has been suffering from health problems ever since a fiery crash on the Nuerburgring track in Germany in August 1976, which he survived with severe burns. He also injured his lung in the accident, and he has received two kidney transplants.

You could have driven from Brasilia to London and back, distance wise. Obviously, the damp would have played merry hell with the electrics, though. And finding a petrol station mid-Atlantic...

We took a plane to Boa Vista in the state of Roraima north of the Amazon to meet friends and 6 days later we drove back past where we live in the winter  We were going to a wedding in Montevideo and for some stupid reason we decided to drive instead of fly and drop-in on friends on the way. 10 years ago we couldn't have done it because of the roads but nowadays the roads are not to bad and we had a comfortable 4X4 with plenty of room for 4 people. A back of a fag packet reckoning appears to show it cost us about 3 times more than if we had flown

It was great fun and we zigzagged a lot to visit people which almost doubled the distance if you measure it as the crow fly's, but we followed the coast most of the way. The main BR roads inland (Brazilian motorways) are full of lorries as that is the only way things move around the country, they are very dangerous so we decided not to use them. According to figures from the WHO for 2013, 46,935 people were killed on the roads here and many more injured. I'm sure things have gone down a little nowadays as the roads have got better, but there are loads of people who drive here who have never taken a test. Until couple of years ago it was easy to just buy a drivers license, they are issued buy the State and because of corruption people who worked in those offices would just sell them to people to supplement their wages. The law changed a couple of years ago and now you have to produce documents from a driving school that show you drove for so many hours and went to driver school. You have to renew your license every 5 years so many of the people who just brought their license will now have to take a test, as many States cancelled peoples licenses who they believed were brought.

What is this all about :hmm:
What was the Mercedes contract pic about?
It seems that Mercedes knew about Ricciardo's announcement and were trolling him with that tweet :)

It is interesting to note that Danny Ric had an interview with F1.com on the 2nd of August, just one day before his announcement and told them "I expect to re-sign for Red Bull and you can expect an announcement before Spa" :hmm:

I would have thought (as I mentioned above) that Sainz would just drop-in and replace Ricciardo at Red Bull as he is a signed Red Bull driver, but and it is a big but, Max is now the number one driver in the team and he and Sainz don't get along at all. When Verstappen and Sainz were together at Toro Rosso the team had a very hard time handling the pairing as apparently "they fought like cat and dog, so maybe it isn't as simple as I thought. Max having a father who was an F1 driver may have an extremely good contract, which could include him having a say in who is his team mate, like it has been reported for Hamilton and Vettel. But Red Bull are a "different" type of team and I'm not sure Helmut Marko would allow such a clause, the counter to that is Red Bull wanted to keep Max and may have allowed him to add such a clause in his contract, I guess time will tell. I don't really see any other driver on Red Bulls books at the moment who is better than Sainz.

Sainz has been in talks with McLaren to replace Alonso, so that could be a solution for him if Red Bull (or Max) decide not to sign him. Pierre Gasly has impressed at Toro Rosso but if he were to move up to Red Bull who would replace him at Toro Rosso? Looking at the Red Bull stable of young drivers there isn't a qualified youngster seemingly in a position to step in up, none of their young drivers has enough points to get a super license. And what about Brendon Hartley, it seems from the press that Toro Rosso were looking to replace him at the end of the season, so if Gasly were to move up, Toro Rosso could be in a position to need 2 drivers with none of their junior drivers having a super license.

I believe that Honda will want to place a Japanese driver in the team at some point very soon, so Toro Rosso could really only be looking for a driver for one season. I think a solution could be that Sainz moves to McLaren (if Alonso leaves) and the young British McLaren driver Lando Norris moves to Toro Rosso as a replacement for Gasly, who himself moves to Red Bull. I seem to remember reading that Toro Rosso were looking at replacing Hartley with Norris, so if there is a vacant seat it could make sense.

So what if any, are the knock-on effect of Ricciardo's move on other teams and drivers? Well clearly it has a big effect on French driver Esteban Ocon was bound for Renault, if news reports are to be believed, so it could/will have an effect on Force India. But it looks likely that the Stroll family could have some investment in the new ownership of Force India, which would surely mean Lance Stroll would move there, leaving a space at Williams. Could that be a good place for Mercedes protege and Formula Two leader George Russell to move to Williams (with some financial help from Mercedes for Williams with their engine supply).

I think other changes could be in the offing depending on what Ferrari do about replacing Kimi. Charles Leclerc is tipped to replace him and that would leave an opening at Sauber. We also have reports that Haas want to replace Romain Grosjean, could Kimi move to Sauber or Haas?

One thing is for sure I don't think we have seen the end of driver changes yet this season. Also does Danny Ric's move signal that Red Bull will for sure be running a Honda power-unit in 2019 and could that be one of the reasons he has moved?

If I were Danny Ric, and thought I would be having a Honda unit at RB next year, I'd want to move on.

Renault won world championships with RB, so he knows they've got the muscle.

Honda? Alonso's later career tells you everything.

Edit: Naughty, naughty Mercedes. :p

hmm you got to wonder how Horner is going to handle the Honda relationship next year

:hmm:

He has not been to kinda to Renault over the years even when they were winning WC,

Hows he going to handle it if the engine is still unreliable next year..

Saying that will Red bull end up the Honda Works Team if the Dietrich pulls out due to not winning
