F1 2018

Sorry I missed that race. Family matters have needed attending to this last week.

I managed to avoid hearing the results until I caught the highlights yesterday evening. I dunno what the full race was like, but the 60 mins version was lively and a half.

Spain's next with some sensible timings for European viewers.

Hasta la vista, muchachos.

Race in downtown Miami next season
It seems there could be a new Formula 1 street race in Miami as soon as 2019. The City of Miami Commission is due to vote on F1's proposal on May 10. Liberty Media have been keen to secure an extra race on home soil since taking control of the sport last year, and so far the Miami bid is the most advanced.

The timing of the proposed Miami Grand Prix would be discussed between F1, the FIA and the city authorities if the City Commission gives the green light, but it is hoped the inaugural race would take place in October 2019 the same month as the existing U.S. Grand Prix in Austin. According to the City Commission's meeting agenda, the race contract would run from 2019 to 2028.

A street race in Vietnam's capital city Hanoi is also under consideration for 2019, but it is not yet clear if the added venues will result in a longer calendar or if some existing races will be replaced.

Sauber's technical Director sacked
Jorg Zander only rejoined the Swiss team ahead of the 2017 campaign from Audi as Sauber carried out a restructure of the outfit following the arrival of new owners the previous summer. He and his team overhauled the design concept of the 2018 challenger, the C37, and it has shown promise, with Sauber scoring points in two of the first four races.

But today Sauber announced Zander who was chief designer for BMW Sauber between 2006 and 2007 “will stop working for the team with immediate effect. We would like to thank him for his dedication and we wish Jorg Zander all the best and success for the future". Various heads of departments and the current project leaders will continue to work on the development of the C37 and the 2019 car with the supervision of Team Principal Frederic Vasseur.

Sauber have made a good step forward this year, hauling themselves back into the midfield and in contention to score points so this news threatens to halt that momentum. The team have spent the last few years restructuring the technical department, with Jan Monchaux joining last month as their new Head of Aerodynamics. His predecessor Nicolas Hennel de Beaupreau moved to another role in the company as the team focused on getting the most out of their new, aggressive package.

This is not the first time Sauber have found themselves without a Technical Director. For large periods under Monisha Kaltenborn’s reign, a group of team leaders ran the department collectively. It will be interesting to see if Sauber pursues a way forward without a figurehead leading the department or chooses to begin the hunt for a replacement.

Proposed Formula 1 circuit in Miami

The map suggests that the start-finish line will be in the area of the Freedom Tower and it is likely that a pit building would be constructed in this area, where there is space created by parking lots between the two carriageways. This would mean that the facilities in the American Airlines Arena, the home of Miami Heat NBA team, could be integrated into the event. The track would go south for five blocks before looping around a half circle at 3rd Street and going back up Biscayne Boulevard to a right turn on to Port Boulevard. This would take the cars over the bridge to Port Miami. This section would be very high speed, with the cars then braking for a hairpin and then returning across the bridge to a second hairpin leading to Bayshore Drive and the loop around the American Airlines Arena, using the same track that was used by Formula E a couple of years ago.

Mallya's assets in the UK can be seized and sold

Vijay Mallya has suffered a serious setback in the high court in London with a judge ruling that a legal judgment against him in India can be enforced against his assets in England and Wales, which means that they may be seized and sold. The ruling, handed down by Andrew Henshaw QC, was sought by a consortium of Indian state-owned banks to which Malaya and various of his companies owe more that $1.3 billion. This follows an Indian ruling in the Debt Recovery Tribunal in Karnataka in January.

“There is a risk of the value of Dr Mallya’s assets deteriorating, and, or, being subject to claims by other creditors, and a risk of Dr Mallya being declared bankrupt,” Henshaw wrote. “Dr Mallya’s departure from India, to where he has never since returned, and his resistance to India’s application to extradite him to face trial on serious criminal charges, provide some grounds for regarding him as a fugitive from justice”.

The case sets a precedent allowing the use of worldwide freezing order when enforcing judgments. An application to appeal was rejected on the grounds that there is a serious risk that Mallya could dispose of his assets, referring in his response to Diageo money that Mallya placed in trust funds for his children and to a valuable sword that he claims to have given away. Mallya was ordered to pay costs of $300,000.

Mallya is still waiting to hear whether the extradition case against him in the UK will go ahead but remains in the UK with his creditors now able to sell his assets. It is not clear whether his shares in Force India will be covered by the order. The team is owned by a Luxembourg holding company and his shares are controlled by a company in Mauritius. However, Mallya needs to live and is used to an expensive lifestyle and so he maybe need to sell assets elsewhere. His partner in Force India, Subrata Roy of Sahara, in similar trouble in India last week agreed to sell the Plaza Hotel in New York.

How to build a car by Adrian Newey
What a great book, well worth a read. I know a couple of you have the book but have your read it yet, if not get it out and read it now :) I have a very different opinion of Newey today than I had before reading the book, Newey is part-nerd and part-rebellious teenager in a middle-aged man’s body. He has turned what could have been just a text book into a really enjoyable read, he explains everything within the context of the circumstances of the team and his life at that time and is fabulously indiscreet and direct in parts when talking about the drivers he has worked with, such as Mario Andretti and Sebastian Vettel, he also talks about Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Alain Prost and others along the way.

This book pulls off the remarkable feat of being a first-class autobiography and textbook all in one. For those interested in the evolution of the F1 cars between the late ‘80s and now, it decodes all the mysteries previously hidden by competitive secrecy while revealing the man behind most of the greatest cars of that time period. I have read many books and autobiography about F1 and the people involved and this has to be one of the very best.

Drivers press conference Spanish F1GP

4 drivers today Fernando Alonso (McLaren), Brendon Hartley (Toro Rosso), Sergio Perez (Force India), Carlos Sainz (Renault)

I can't find it on terrestrial here in Spain! FFS!

Is this a legacy of the fucking dwarf Bernie?

Sorry. I'm annoyed.

In FP3 it looked like 2017 again, with Mercedes out front and Ferrari some way behind.

Horrendous accident for Brendon Hartley. He just drifted a tiny bit onto the grass and span 180 to rear-end the barrier. He was fine - maybe a bit shaken - but the car was a mess. When the marshals tried to lift his car, the engine and gearbox block fell off the chassis. I doubt he'll be in qualifying.
