F1 2016

Could be an exciting finish if there's a Max / Lewis / Seb fight for second.

Nico will just turn the wick up a touch and stay in front, though.

Mercedes - WC number 3.

Time for Red Bull to challenge next year?

A good drive from Hammy, eventually. 8th to 3rd isn't too shabby. Pity he went from 2nd to 8th.

Nico had a walk in the park.

There's always a distinct chill in the cool-down room when Lewis and Nico are there.

Poor Max was trying to be conversational and got blanked.

provisional finishing places, apparently Max is under investigation for something according to Lauda

A car being overtaken is not supposed to change direction under braking.

It was Max's first move and Hammy was behind him. So I reckon the result will stand.

If that is what they are looking at your right, I didn't hear what was being investigated

On Sky someone suggested dropping the blue flags for a couple of races to see what happens.

Probably carnage.

:D
On the replay it seems they are calling for blue flags when they are 1/2 a kilometer behind :) I wish they had blue flags on the motorways here :)

Come on Ted get your notebook out I want to go to bed, I'm knackered

Looking out of the window it is just getting light so I think I'll take the dog out on the beach for the sunrise, my old lady has friends here this weekend, so me taking the dog now will get me some brownie points as she can stay in bed a little longer:thumbs:
Catch you in 2 weeks for the USGP :)

Fuck .. I was just checking the BBC news site and saw that Rosberg won.

I don't believe it ... not sure I will bother to watch later now ..

Rumours around Renault
It would seem that there is a power struggle at the top of the Renault Formula one team, Cyril Abiteboul Managing Director of the Renault Sport F1 Team and the relatively new team principal Frederic Vasseur are at loggerheads over a number of issues, not least the driver line-up for next season. It would seem that they agree on Nico Hulkenberg who is likely to make the move from Force India but disagree on who should take the second seat. Vasseur is reported to have already done a handshake deal with Toto Wolff for the young Frenchman Esteban Ocon to drive for the team in 2017 but Abiteboul is keen to sign-up Bottas and if they can't get him he wants Daniil Kvyat. Whatever the truth, it looks like very bad news for the current drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer as they appear to be way down the list.

It would seem that Renault Sport president Jerome Stoll has his work cutout as Abiteboul and Vasseur both have massive responsibilities in meeting the teams targets and their areas of responsibilities overlap in many areas, next year they want to be a top 5 team and win the championship with-in 5 years. [There is always the chance of a deal between Renault and Force India to exchange The Hulk with K-Mag, this would have an advantage for Force India as K-Mag would bring some big money with him in sponsorship]

James Allison watch
The latest romours about James are that he could be taking over at Red Bull from Adrian Newey, but Helmut Marko says this is not going to happen. While he may not move directly to Red Bull there have been reports that James Key the technical director at Toro Rosso could be on his way to Williams, which would leave room for Allison in the bigger Red Bull picture. It was thought that Allison was going to Renault but as mentioned in the above report they appear to be having problems and they also put out a statement recently saying he wasn't going there, but if the power struggle with-in Renault get sorted, who knows [I mentioned in a previous post that he didn't take up the Renault job as he was offered a post lower down the totem-pole than he was originally offered]. Marchionne must be kicking himself "allowing" him leave Ferrari when clearly others should have gone, not Allison.

I'd like to see him move to McLaren but I'm not sure there is a vacancy ;)

The Mercedes protest
Mercedes did lodge a protest against Max Verstappen after his move on Lewis towards the end of the Japanese GP, but the team has now withdrawn their protest and Lewis is very keen to make it clear that he didn't support the protest in the first place. It is now being reported that the stewards did look at the incident and a majority said "no further action needed to be Taken". Apparently Garry Connelly the outvoted steward didn't like this and took matters in own hand by going to the Mercedes motorhome trying to convince Mercedes’ bosses of his case. By that time both Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda were already on a plane and Connelly only found Paddy Lowe and Ron Meadows. Those two happily agreed with Connelly and said they wanted to protest. Some time later Hamilton find out and phoned Wolff saying he is opposed to the case and Wolff agreed demanding a withdrawal of the protest [This is not how a stewards should act and I hope the FIA drop him from the list].

There may not be a ready slot for Allison at McLaren, but they could do with some good, joined -up engineering.
It is a real waste of talent having Allison just sitting at home, he is one of the best engineers in F1. Ferrari have made a number of mistakes this season and the biggest was loosing Allison. Luca Baldisserri a former chief engineer and strategist with Ferrari is claiming in the Italian press that there is a "climate of terror" currently with-in the Ferrari team, he says that the problems are because "neither Marchionne nor Arrivabene have any experience in motor racing" and he went on to say "Today, they [Ferrari] are no longer a team, but a group of frightened people. In this climate of terror, the boys do not innovate, do not make decisions for fear of being expelled in disgrace".

In my view they will keep going backwards until they put someone who understands fully how formula one works in as team principle, clearly they have the money but they are lacking someone who can achieve stability and put in place an efficient organisation. Marchionne needs to take a step back and put someone who can run the team effectively in place and leave them alone to do the job, he wants instance results and they just don't come in F1.

In other news;
Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd only lost £22.3 million in 2015 even having won both the drivers and constructors championships, its an improvement on 2014 where the company lost £76.1 million. The team had £66.3 million more to spend in 2015 from higher sponsorship revenue and increased income from the commercial rights holder but had increased costs of £8.1 million. It isn't cheap to go racing nowadays :)

Reports in the German press are claiming the rumor above is correct about The Hulk, he has apparently signed a 2 year deal with a one year option to drive for Renault next season. So who will replace him at Force India I wonder?
Edit, Renault have now confirmed the move

Bernie's mother-in-laws kidnap case started today in a Sao Paulo Court, seven people have been charged and a verdict is unlikely until early next year.

I think they would like to get Ocon but he has ties to Mercedes, so long term isn't a good bet, but the French would love a French driver in a French team. On the other hand Ocon could replace Hulk at Force India, the team is very short of money and maybe Mercedes would give them some discount on their power-unit and Force India would be much better for him than Manor.

In the back of my mind the reported handshake deal between Toto and Vasseur has me wondering, also on the radio today someone pointed out that as The Hulk overtook Bottas last weekend he said over team radio "see you later" to Bottas, does he know something or is that straw pulling to the extreme ;)

There's a seat going spare at Porsche now that Mark Webber is retiring and Hulkenburg won Le Mans in 2015. Apparently he was unamused at not being able to defend his crown at La Sarthe this year.

Ross Brawn couldn't trust Wolff and Lauda
Ross Brawn and Adam Parr (ex -CEO of Williams) have written a book called, Total Competition: Lessons in Strategy from Formula 1. In it he has said a number of interesting things. Brawn sold his team to Mercedes at the end of 2009 bringing Michael Schumacher out of retirement to again race for Brawn (they became sole owners early in 2011).

Brawn now claims that he left the team in 2013 because he couldn't trust others that had been brought into the team by Mercedes management, namely Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda. Brawn says "What happened at Mercedes is that people were imposed on me who I couldn't trust. I never really knew what they were trying to do, I mean Niki would tell me one thing, then I would hear he was saying something else. So I was beginning to deal with people who I didn't feel I could ultimately trust; people within the team, who had let me down already in terms of their approach".

He then goes on to talk about Paddy Lowe. "Then in early 2013, I discovered Paddy Lowe had been contracted to join the team and it had been signed off in Stuttgart, when I challenged Toto and Niki [over the sign-off], they blamed each other. I met them to have it out with them. And they both pointed to each other. I couldn't trust [these] people, so I saw no future unless I was willing to go to war and remove them. I saw no future with people that I didn't feel I could trust".

I knew that if he ever broke his silence he would expose some of the things that he kept to himself while still in F1. He also explains that he didn't know anything about Ferrari having a veto on rule changes, until 2005 just one year before he left the team.

Is Ron Dennis being pushed out of McLaren
There are a number of reports in the press that a power struggle in the board room of the McLaren Technology Group has come to ahead and that Ron will be sidelined (it is unclear if this will effect his position with-in McLaren Automotive which is a separate company). Dennis only holds 25% of the shares in the Technology Group, which include McLaren Racing (the F1 team), McLaren Marketing and McLaren Applied Technologies.

When he came back in 2014 and replaced Martin Whitmarsh it was reported that he intended to by the whole company back, regaining the 50% of shares owned by Bahraini sovereign wealth fund and the 25% owned by Mansour Ojjeh his long-term business partner. He hasn't been able to raise the funds to do so and it is now claimed that there is a boardroom coup to oust him as CEO.

Ron has said he is not stepping down, but as a minority shareholder it isn't really up to him if he stays or goes, I guess we will hear more about this over the weekend or at sometime very soon.

Sauber to run 2016 power-unit in 2017
It seem a very strange decision when one considered that the team has been taken over by new owners who were reported to have the finances to take the team forward. At the time of the takeover Monisha Kaltenborn who is to continue as CEO said "We are very pleased we can secure the future of Sauber at the pinnacle of motorsport, We are convinced that Longbow Finance is the perfect partner to again make the team competitive and successful in F1".

The team say it will give them the opportunity to focusing on next year's aerodynamic overhaul, but surely they have seen how Toro Rosso has fallen back this season while using a 2015 Ferrari power-unit, the longer the season has gone on the bigger struggles Toro Rosso have had keeping up.

Pascal Wehrlein talking to Force India
Wehrlein is part of the Mercedes young driver programme and Force India use Mercedes power-units and there were rumors early this year that Mercedes said they were prepared to supply the team with a more competitive engine deal if they took a young Mercedes driver when it looked like Sergio Perez may leaver the team. There are drivers who would bring much more money to the team, so I'm sure there are a number of other drivers still in the frame.

If you can't get enough of Ted here are some of his best moments (he is not very good at maths)
