F1 2016

Oh, yes he did!

Oh, no he didn't. :)

Niki Lauda backtracks on comments about Lewis Hamilton

Niki Lauda, um, made a mistake. It must have been someone else trashing the room and saying nice things about the team's esprit de corps.

“Niki regrets any misunderstanding caused by comments that have been blown wildly out of proportion compared with the casual context in which they were made.”

Will weather mix things up at Silverstone
The long range weather forecast appears to show some rain on Friday and also Saturday, the rain on Saturday could well effect qualifying, but Sunsay looks to be rain free. Jenson must be really wanting rain as one of the few things still left on his F1 bucket list is getting on the podium at the British GP. To date he has never finished higher than 4th place at the track.

Herbie rides no more

No not the love bug ;) but Herbie Blash the FIA Deputy Race Director since 1996. Michael Blash known as Herbie started in F1 way back in 1965. Nowadays he is often seen rounding up the top 3 drivers at the end of a race to ensure they get to the "cool-down room" as quickly as possible. He started in F1 as Rob Walker's mechanic and also worked for Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt. His first management roll was with Lotus, he them moved on to Brabham. He has held many jobs with-in F1 teams and moved to work for the FIA.

The Aston Martin AM-RB 001
This is the hypercar designed by Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey and Aston Martin’s chief creative officer Marek Reichman, it will hit the roads in 2018 with a limited run of 150 road cars and 25 track racers. The car is powered by a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V12 engine.

What, so, has he retired, died, what has happened to Herbie ?

Current weather forecast (it will change by the time I finish typing this) has some spots of rain between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday.

This, I'm sure you'll agree, will herald in a drought of biblical proportions, and the drivers will have to slalom around the whitened bones of dead camels and rattlesnakes.

The clocks don't change in the UK this weekend do they?

Sorry about that I was posting from somewhere other than my computer so kept everything short, as Limejuice mentioned he is retiring as Deputy Race Director but I think he will still be involved with F1 and the FIA but in a much reduced position.

No.

It's just a weird set-up. I double-checked the times. The three afternoon sessions are 2pm, 1pm and 1pm*.

Usually it's the morning session that bobs about.

ETA: * That's British Summer Time = GMT+1.

According to Mr Kravitz, Ferrari didn't see Sainz, Gutierrez, Perez or Grosjean as being better than Kimi. A significant consideration was Mr Vettel's comfort zone, and Vettel and Kimi are comfortable.

But, he says, the driver the main man at Ferrari, one Signor Marchione, wants is a certain L Hamilton Esq of this parish.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I reckon there are more fans watching FP1 at Silverstone today than were watching the race on Sunday in Austria.

Also, they showed an aerial shot of the camp site - it was like Glastonbury.

Muddy fields. Screaming engines. Carbonised barbecue products.

So, Ferrari renew Kimi's contract.

I didn't see that coming.

All we need is to relax the radio rules, and next season's audio entertainment is looking good.

e2a: Kimi Raikkonen re-signs for Ferrari for the 2017 season
So that rather puts the kibosh on the driver market for next year even though only 2 teams have confirmed both drivers for 2017 (Ferrari and Red Bull). It shouldn't be forgotten that Kimi has the same number of points as Vettel and four podiums so far this season and almost all other likely replacements are under contract.

I guess with Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, Stoffel Vandoorne, Valtteri Bottas and Nico Rosberg all contracted elsewhere there wasn't really anyone to replace Kimi, I know there was a lot of talk of Sergio Perez moving to Ferrari but I never really thought that move was on the cards.

So where are there seats for next year? Williams and McLaren may have an open seats but if Jenson goes it is likely that Vandoorne will take that seat (if he doesn't go to McLaren he will get a seat at Renault), Williams could have a vacant seat if Massa goes but I think Massa could well move to Renault who are in need of a development driver.

What about Haas, Sauber and Manor? I think Haas will stick with Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez. Both Sauber drivers bring loads of sponsorship money to the team so both may well stay and Wehrlein with his links to Mercedes is likely to stay at Manor.

No-one wants a Honda
It seems that Honda are looking for a 2nd team to run their power-unit but no-one wants it, clearly it would be good for Honda to have a second team to help with development, but with the back of the grid teams all signed up with other suppliers there is no place. Could Honda bring a manufacturer team to the grid, I don't really think so, it would cost far to much.

If news reports are to be believed Ron Dennis is also in agreement with Honda supplying a 2nd team, but I'm sure he would also not want Honda to become a manufacturer team as that would make McLaren a customer rather than a partner.

Honda needs fellow guinea pigs. No team wants to be a guinea pig, much less pay to be one. If the system worked, they'd be queuing up. But it doesn't. At least, not well enough or reliably.

I forget how long Honda have been trying to hammer this square-peg motor into a round-hole power system, but there must be a point when you call the dog-food company and offer them the dead horse.

Wow. Ericsson.

Full speed, nose-on crash.

Dipped a wheel on the astro. Instant passenger into the squashy wall.

100,000,000 pieces of carbon fibre and a driver (who walks away from it).
